1. S K Sharma appointed CMD of Nuclear Power Corporation of India
Renowned scientist S K Sharma was appointed the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL).
Sharma will be responsible for design, construction, commissioning and operation of nuclear power reactors. He has been appointed to the new post for a period of five years.
At present, Sharma is working as Distinguished Scientist and Director (Operations) in NPCIL.
2. Book on teachers for visually-challenged released
Governor KK Paul released a book titled ‘Visual Disability – A Resource Book for Teachers’ at Raj Bhavan. The National Institute for the Visually Handicapped (NIVH) has come up with the book with the help of several experts.
The Governor, while addressing the gathering, said the book would be of great use for professionals who teach visually-challenged children as well as adults. He congratulated the director and principal of the NIVH and other experts who contributed to this work.
3. Minister of Railways Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu inaugurated five new activities
Minister of Railways Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu inaugurated five new activities namely (i) New AC Weekly Express train between H. Nizamuddin-Pune, (ii) Expansion of VIKALP Scheme of Alternate Train Reservation to Delhi-Howrah, Delhi- Chennai, Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Secunderabad Circuits, (iii) Pilot Project of Sale of Unreserved Tickets through Hand Held Terminals, (iv) Launching of Ergonomically Redesigned & Optimised Tools for Track Gangs, Keymen & Patrolmen and (v) Pilot Project for Improving Safety at Unmanned Level Crossing.
4. Deutsche Bank sees India's GDP growth at 7.8% in 2017
Deutsche Bank sees India's gross domestic product growth at 7.8 per cent in 2017, up from this year's 7.5 per cent, noting that the economy seems to have bottomed out.
But for this year, the growth is flattish, forecast at 7. 5 per cent, the same as last year.
Overall, India remains the world's fastest growing economy, ahead of China's 6.7 per cent forecast for 2017 and 2016, down from 6.9 per cent in 2015, according to data released by DB.
It has forecast an improving economy of the combined emerging markets in Asia at 6.2 per cent growth in 2017 as to 6.0 per cent this year and 6.2 per cent recorded in 2015.
The bank sees global economy growing at 3.6 per cent in 2017, up from 3.0 per cent this year and 3.1 per cent in 2017, up from 3.0 per cent this year and 3.1 per cent in 2015.
