1. London gets its first-ever Muslim mayor

Sadiq Khan has been elected the new Mayor of London - boosting Labour after it slumped in Scotland's elections.

Khan was the city's first Muslim mayor, after beating Tory Zac Goldsmith by 1, 310,143 votes to 994, 614.

Khan's victory ends eight years of Conservative control of City Hall.

2. IDBI Bank first PSB to open banking unit at GIFT City's IFSC

IDBI Bank on Friday announced opening of its international banking unit (IBU) within the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) at Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City). With this, IDBI became the first public sector bank to open a global desk at GIFT City.

The bank is aiming to provide foreign currency funding facility to its Indian clients from GIFT City.

IDBI Bank has presence at DIFC, Dubai which is catering to foreign currency and trade related requirements of corporate clients. This is further complemented by opening of IBU at GIFT City.

3. Federal Bank ties up with US based payments company for faster international remittances

Kerala based private sector lender Federal BankBSE -1.73 % has tied up with Transfast Remittance LLC for facilitating online inward remittance to India in Rupees for their NRI customers based in USA. Transfast which is an omni-channel provider of cross-border payments solutions to consumers around the world, operates its network across 120+ countries in the USA, Asia, Europe and Africa. 

With this tie-up, the US-based NRI customers can transfer money instantly to their NRI account in India from their US bank account even by using Debit card/ Credit card. 

4. Dutee shines again, wins women's 100m dash

Odisha sprinter Dutee Chand grabbed the spotlight once again as she won the gold in women's 100m dash with a fast timing in the second leg of Indian Grand Prix athletics series at the NIS tracks. 

Dutee crossed the finish line in 11.37 secs to win the 100m sprint race, well ahead of H M Jyothi (Canara Bank, 11.57 secs) and her state-mate Srabani Nanda (11.60 sces). 

Dutee had set a national record of 11.33 secs in the Federation Cup National Athletics Championships in New Delhi last month. She had, however, missed the Rio Olympics qualification mark of 11.32secs by one-hundredth of a second.

5. Pranav Pandya refused to accept nomination to Rajya Sabha

Pranav Pandya, head of All World Gayatri Pariwar, who was nominated to Rajya Sabha by the Modi government, today spurned the honour saying atmosphere in the Upper House was not conducive for him. 

Pandya, an MD in Medicine, was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by President Pranab Mukherjee following a recommendation of the government. 

6. Retired justice M L Mehta to head panel on revising metro fares

Former judge of Delhi High Court Justice M L Mehta has been appointed as chairman of a three-member government panel on revision of Delhi Metro rail fares. 

Besides Mehta, Delhi Chief Secretary K K Sharma and Durga Shanker Mishra, Additional Secretary of Urban Development Ministry, have also been nominated as its members. 

The panel will submit its report within a maximum of three months time. 

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the proposal for appointment of Justice Mehta, as chairman of the 4th Fare Fixation Committee in the Delhi Metro Railway Corporation Limited (DMRC), an order issued by Department of Personnel and Training said. 

The DMRC has requested the Centre to constitute 4th Fare Fixation Committee for recommending fares for Delhi Metro network. 

Justice Mehta was sworn in as additional judge of Delhi High Court on December 3, 2010. He retired on December 30, 2013. 

7. Indian Parashar Kulkarni wins 2016 Commonwealth Short Story Prize for Asia Region

Indian Parashar Kulkarni won the Commonwealth Short Story Prize for 2016, for the Asia region. He was awarded for his politically grounded unpublished short fiction 'Cow and Company'.

He will receive a cash prize of 2500 pounds (3835 US dollars).

The story 'Cow and Company' narrates the story of four men in search of a cow. The story manages to keep the reader engaged through twists and turns show the connections between culture and commercial interests.

Parashar Kulkarni is an assistant professor in Social Sciences at Yale NUS College Singapore.

He is one of the five winners of 2016 Commonwealth Short Story Prize. Winners from other four regions are:

• FaraazMahomed - ‘The Pigeon’ with its playful tone and unreliable narrator

• Stefanie Seddon - Eel, a simply told and moving story of childhood

• Lance Dowrich - comedic ‘Ethelbert and the Free Cheese’

• Tina Makereti - ‘Black Milk’, which impressed with a lyricism that takes the reader into another world while keeping them always on earth

8. Manohar Kumar takes over as Director (Engg) in NPCC

Shri Manohar Kumar took over as Director (Engineering) on the Board of National Projects Construction Corporation Limited (NPCC). 

NPCC is a PSU under Ministry Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation.

9. India, Japan to sign MoU on cooperation in sports

India and Japan agreed for exchange of sports persons, coaches, sports experts, sports administrators, etc., and decided that they will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the field of sports.

In the run-up to the Under-17 World Cup set to be hosted in the country next year, India and Japan decided to exchange sportspersons, coaches, experts and administrators to improve the standard of the game in both nations.

Hiroshi also informed that the Shinzo Abe-led government has launched a programme named 'Sport For Tomorrow' to promote sports among more than 10 million people in 100 nations between 2014 and 2020. In 2020, Tokyo will host the Summer Olympics and Paralympic Games.

10.Wrestlers Vinesh, Sakshi grab Rio 2016 berths

Reigning Commonwealth Games champion Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik booked Rio 2016 berths in their respective categories at the second Olympic World qualifying tournament.

Vinesh made amends for her disqualification from the first World Olympic qualifier to book the Rio berth in women's 48kg.

Sakshi, who became the second Indian woman to qualify, defeated China's Lan Zhang in the semi-final to set up a summit clash against Russian Valeria Koblova in the 58kg category.
