1. Kishore Biyani steps down as Managing Director of Future Retail

Future Group Chairman Kishore Biyani stepped down as managing director of Future Retail.
As per the deal announced in May last year, both the companies had proposed a demerger of the retail business of Future Retail to Bharti Retail and separation of the infrastructure business of Bharti Retail into Future Retail. 

Future Group will have two entities — one that will own all retail formats, including Big Bazaar, Easy-Day, eZone and HomeTown under Future Retail which is already listed, and Future Enterprises that will house all the backend operations, logitics business and non -executive director of Future Retail, the company said in a statement to the Bombay Stock Exchange.

2. AIIB, ADB sign MOU on cooperation

The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to strengthen cooperation.The agreement sets the stage for jointly-financed projects.

The two financial institutions inked the MOU in the German city of Frankfurt, where the ADB is holding its 49th annual meeting of its board of governors.

The first of these projects is expected to be Pakistan's M4 highway, a 64-kilometer motorway connecting Shorkot to Khanewal in Punjab Province, according to the statement.

3. Leicester wins English title for 1st time in its 132 years

Leicester City completed one of the greatest-ever sporting achievements by winning the Premier League for the first time in 132 years.

4. 5 lakh trees to be planted along rail track in Punjab, Haryana

With an aim of afforestation on the vast tracts of rail land, the Railways today joined hands with the forest departments of Punjab and Haryana for plantation of 5 lakh trees in the two states as part of the 'Green India Mission'. 

After Punjab and Haryana, railways will sign similar agreements will other states to carry out the green mission.

5. Indian American Sikh woman, Harmeet Kaur Dhillon, elected to key Republican position

An Indian American Sikh woman from California, Harmeet Kaur Dhillon, was elected to an important position in the Republican Party at the US national level.

Chandigarh-born Harmeet Kaur Dhillon was elected as the newest national committee woman of the Republican National Committee.

Earlier, she was earlier the vice chairman of the California GOP. She was the first woman elected to this position of vice chair of the California Republican Party.

6. World's smallest engine developed

Scientists have developed the world's tiniest engine - just a few billionths of a metre in size - which is powered by light and may help develop nano-machines that can navigate in water, sense the environment around them, or even enter living cells to fight disease. 

The prototype device is made of tiny charged particles of gold, bound together with temperature-responsive polymers in the form of a gel. 

7. Rio Olympics: Sachin Tendulkar accepts offer to become India's Goodwill Ambassador

Sachin Tendulkar today joined Salman Khan and ace shooter Abhinav Bindra to become the third Goodwill Ambassador for India at the Rio Olympics this year.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had invited Tendulkar to come on board on April 29 and they heard from the Master Blaster today. Tendulkar said he would be happy to accept the honour and added that he would do whatever he could to promote sports in the country.

8. Vijay Mallya resigns from Rajya Sabha

Independent MP and liquor baron Vijay Mallya, facing a case of loan default of over Rs. 9,400 crore, on Monday resigned from Rajya Sabha, a day before Ethics Committee of the Upper House was set to recommend his expulsion.

In his resignation letter to Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari, he said, “I am shocked that the Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance, Government of India has provided factually wrong information to a Parliament Committee.

9. Religious freedom in India on 'negative trajectory': US panel

Religious freedom in India was on a "negative trajectory" in 2015 as religious tolerance "deteriorated" and religious freedom violations "increased", a US report on international religious freedom said.

In its annual report, the Congress-mandated US Commission for International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) asked the Indian government to publicly rebuke officials and religious leaders that make derogatory statements about religious communities.
