1. UN names special envoys for El Nino and climate
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has appointed former Irish President Mary Robinson and Kenyan diplomat Macharia Kamau as special envoys for El Nino and climate.
The El Nino weather phenomenon, which occurs every two to seven years, affects rainfall patterns and causes both drought and flooding.
Its effects can be seen in places like Sudan, where the UN estimates 400,000 people will need food aid due to El Nino-related drought. Neighbouring Ethiopia is experiencing its worst drought in 50 years.
Robinson had previously served as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and as Ban's special envoy for climate change.
Kamau is Kenya's ambassador to the United Nations and former president of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Board. He was co-chair of the UN General Assembly working group on sustainable development goals, which includes the fight against climate change.
2. BSE elects Sumit Bose to its board
Top bourse BSE said that it has appointed Sumit Bose as a member on the board of directors.
BSE had received the approval from Sebi on May 19, to nominate Sumit Bose, a new member on its Governing Board as a Public Interest Director.
"The board has approved the appointment of Sumit Bose with effect from May 19, 2016," BSE said in a statement.
Bose is a 1976 batch Madhya Pradesh cadre IAS officer and has served as a secretary in various departments of the Madhya Pradesh government.
3. Hari becomes second Indian to bag podium in Asia Dream Cup
Indian motorcycle racer Hari Krishnan romped home to his first-ever podium finish at the international level, finishing a creditable second in the Race 2 of the Asia Dream Cup here.
Hari is a product of Honda's training Ten10 Racing academy and selected by the company to represent India based on his consistent performances in the Honda One Make Race Championships. With the podium, he became the second-Indian to do so after S Sarath Kumar had finished second in Qatar during 2014 season.
4. Dilip Shanghvi, IDFC Bank, Telenor drop plans to set up payments bank
Telenor Financial Services , IDFC Bank and Dilip Shanghvi announced the withdrawal of their plans to set up a payments bank in India.
The collective decision of the three partners will be communicated to Reserve Bank of India (RBI), following which the payments bank licence will not be pursued.
A payments banks can, typically, accept deposits, convey remittances and make payments to recipients, making them ideal for migrant workers who often need to send cash home. They, however, cannot lend money.
5. North Korean diplomat who negotiated '94 deal with US dies
A top North Korean diplomat who negotiated a short-lived 1994 deal with the United States to freeze its nuclear programs in exchange for international aid has died of cancer.
The North's Korean Central News Agency said Kang Sok Ju, a "trustworthy revolutionary comrade" of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and an "excellent son" of the country's ruling party, died of esophageal cancer at the age of 76.
Kang, a longtime foreign policy specialist for the North, was Pyongyang's chief negotiator when it reached a landmark agreement with Washington in 1994 to freeze and eventually dismantle its nuclear facilities in exchange for international aid to build two electricity-producing nuclear reactors.
6. New Tripura High Court chief justice appointed
The president has appointed Justice Tinlianthang Vaiphei as the new chief justice of the Tripura High Court, officials said.
A senior judicial official of Tripura High Court said that union law and justice ministry in a notification on Friday said the president had appointed Justice Vaiphei, senior-most judge of the Tripura High Court.
The official said that Justice Vaiphei, 60, who was administered oath of office by the Tripura Governor Tathagata Roy on May 16, replaced Deepak Kumar Gupta, who was transferred as the chief justice of the Chhattisgarh High Court.
7. Minister of Railways introduced Wi-Fi services at Three More Railway Stations i.e. Patna, Ranchi & Visakhapatnam
The Minister of Railways, Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu inaugurated the High Speed Wi-Fi services at Patna (Bihar), Ranchi (Jharkhand) & Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) Railway Stations through Video Conferencing from Rail Bhawan, New Delhi for the commuters at these Railway Stations. The Wi-Fi facility for the visitors & rail users at these stations has been commissioned by RailTel in association with Google for providing high speed state of the art world class internet experience to the commuters. Chairman, Railway Board Shri A.K. Mital, Member Engineering Shri V.K. Gupta, M.D. RailTel Shri R.K. Bahuguna, and other board Members were present at Rail Bhawan to grace the occasion. Various dignitaries were also presented at the respective abovementioned Railway Stations.
