1. India ranks 3rd in 'Renewable Energy Country Attractiveness Index'
India’s renewable energy sector has been ranked third in the Renewable Energy Country Attractiveness Index (RECAI) with China at second and the US on top.
The so-called emerging markets now represent half the countries in the 40-strong index, including four African markets featuring in the top 30. Just a decade ago, only China and India were attractive enough to compete with more developed markets for investment, EY said in the report. While the top three countries maintained their ranking, Chile, Brazil and Mexico climbed higher in the index to be ranked in the top 10 at the fourth, sixth and seventh, respectively. Germany at fifth and France at eighth fell in the latest ranking.
2. UN agri arm IFAD to grant USD 150 mn to India in next 3 yrs
United Nation's International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) will provide grants worth USD 150 million (about Rs 1,001 crore) to India in the next three years to aid the farm sector.
"IFAD will invest USD 150 million in the next three years for the agriculture sector in India," Oscar Garcia, Director, Independent Office of Evaluation (IOE).
Former Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi has been awarded with an honorary fellowship by a UK student body to "celebrate and acknowledge his contributions in shaping the present and future of India".
Deputy High Commissioner of India Dr Virender Paul bestowed the Honorary Fellowship on Quraishi at an event organised by the '100-Foot Journey Club' and the 'National Indian Students and Alumni Union' (NISAU), UK.
4. Indian-Origin Tamil Scholar, Author Dies At 103 In South Africa
An Indian-origin pioneering Tamil scholar and author, who was instrumental in persuading the South African government to introduce Tamil as a language at secondary schools, died at the age of 103.
Cundasamy Kuppusami, began his career as a teacher and went on to become the first inspector of schools in the Department of Indian Education when the system was still segregated by race in the apartheid era.
The South African-Indian community is mourning the death of Mr Kuppusami.
He was also a prolific author on education in the Indian community and Tamil culture among Indians in South Africa.
Among his most popular books which are still sought after are 'A Short History of Indian Education', Religions, Customs and Practices of South African-Indians' and 'The Three Pillars of Tamil'.
Mr Kuppusami was a founder member and the longest serving member of the South African-Tamil Federation (SATF).
5. Posthumous U.N. honour for four Indian peacekeepers, civilian
Four Indian peacekeepers and a civilian, who laid down their lives while serving in the U.N. peacekeeping operations last year, will be honoured along with other 124 personnel with a prestigious U.N. medal awarded posthumously for their courage and sacrifice.
The fallen Indian peacekeepers who will be honoured with the Dag Hammarskjold Medal on the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers are Head Constable Shubhkaran Yadav, Rifleman Manish Malik, HavildarAmalDeka, Naik Rakesh Kumar and Gagan Punjabi.
Yadav, serving in the U.N. Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) made the supreme sacrifice in April last year and Malik, also serving in the same mission, died in August.
Deka, serving in the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) died in June last year and Kumar serving in the U.N. Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) died in January 2015. Punjabi was serving in MONUSCO in a civilian capacity under the U.N. Volunteers programme and died in an incident in January last year. The International Day of U.N. Peacekeepers, observed annually on May 29, will be commemorated this year on May 19.
6. Geremew and Jepchirchir powered to impressive victories at the ninth TCS World 10K
Mosinet Geremew and Peres Jepchirchir powered to impressive victories at the ninth TCS World 10K in Bengaluru.
Taking control of the men's race in the eighth kilometre, Geremew held on to win in 28:36 to become the first athlete to secure back-to-back titles in Bengaluru. Jepchirchir, the world half marathon champion, broke from the field in the seventh kilometre to win in 32:15, 13 seconds clear of her Kenyan compatriot Helah Kiprop.
7. Claire Furlong is new ICC General Manager: Strategic Communications
The ICC announced the appointment of Claire Furlong as the world cricket body's General Manager - Strategic Communications.She will take up her position on July 17.
Furlong is the current Head of Sport at Hanover Sport with clients including England and Wales Cricket Board, NFL and Asian Football Confederation.
8. Former India cricketer Deepak Shodhan dies aged 87
Deepak Shodhan, who was the first Indian to make a Test century in his debut innings, has died aged 87. He had been India's oldest living Test cricketer.
9. Wholesale inflation turns positive after 17 months
Wholesale price-based inflation turned positive after 17 months, posting an annual gain of 0.34% in April, on rise in vegetables and pulses prices.
The April Wholesale Price Index-based inflation was at (-)0.85% in March.
"The annual rate of inflation, based on monthly WPI, stood at 0.34% (provisional) for the month of April, 2016 as compared to (-)0.85% for the previous month," said the government data released today.
It was (-)2.43% during the corresponding month of the previous year, showed the data.
