1.General Lori Robinson, first woman in US to lead combatant command 


Air Force General Lori Robinson took charge of the US military’s Northern Command, becoming the first woman to head a US combatant command.

The position is one of the most senior in the US military and makes Robinson, who previously led US air forces in the Pacific, the top general overseeing activities in North America and holding responsibility for homeland defence.

2. Space scientist Rao to be conferred "IAF Hall of Fame" Award


Eminent space scientist Prof U R Rao will be honoured by the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) with the 2016 'IAF Hall of Fame Award" for his outstanding contribution to the progress of astronautics

The IAF award is intended to reward personalities for their contributions to the progress of astronautics and the Federation.

This year's 67th International Astronautical Congress will be held in Guadalajara, Mexico during September 26-30, 2016. 

Prof Rao will receive the 'IAF Hall of Fame' Award and a certificate, during the closing ceremony on September 30, according to an ISRO release.

3. Hindupur Pradeep Rao appointed Deputy CAG


S Senior audit service officer Hindupur Pradeep Rao was appointed as Deputy Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG). 

Rao, a 1981 batch officer of Indian Audit and Account Service, is presently working as Additional CAG. 

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Rao as Deputy CAG with effect from July 1, 2016, an order issued by Department of Personnel and Training said. 

The Comptroller and Auditor General is country's top auditing body.

In another order, the ACC has appointed A K Mittal as Member (Engineering) in Railway Board.

4. World's oldest person dies in New York at the age of 116


Susannah Mushatt Jones, the world's oldest person, has died in New York at age 116.

5. FIFA names Fatma Samoura as first woman secretary general


FIFA named a Senegalese UN diplomat as its first ever female secretary general, a historic move announced at a congress that sought to relegate world football's corruption crisis to the past. 

FIFA president Gianni Infantino made the surprise announcement in Mexico City that he had chosen 54-year-old Fatma Samoura, an outsider unknown to the football world, to be his deputy at the male-dominated organization. 

6. Indian wins award at UN's poster contest on nuclear disarmament


A 22-year-old Indian artist is among the three winners of a UN poster competition aimed at raising awareness about nuclear disarmament, with her poster of a peace dove slicing through a nuclear weapon garnering appreciation from UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

Anjali Chandrashekar, a New York-based designer and "artivist", won the third prize in UN Poster for Peace contest presented by the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs (ODA) to raise awareness of the need for nuclear disarmament.

Titled 'Cutting Barriers through Peace', the poster features a peace dove slicing through a nuclear weapon.

She received her third-prize certificate from Ban at an award ceremony held here on May 3. Apart from the three winners, nine honorable mentions were chosen from among more than 4,100 entries representing 123 countries.

The young artist was only 10 when she founded 'Picture It', a non-governmental organisation that uses imagery to raise awareness and funds for various health, humanitarian and environmental causes.

Another poster 'Break Free' by the Chennai girl, that shows doves flying out of a bird cage at the top of a nuclear weapon, received an honorable mention.

"Nuclear disarmament is usually spoken about on such a high level and I believe that art has the power to humanize some of the most pressing issues that the world faces today," she told the UN News Centre.

"It also transcends barriers of age, language and literacy so I thought this was a great opportunity for me to show that a brush can be mightier than arms."

The first prize went to 38-year-old Ivan Ciro Palomino Huamani from Peru for his 'Spinning Peace', which features a nuclear weapon being unraveled into string which is then used to fly kites and balloons, and to jump rope.

Second place winner, 15-year-old Michelle Li, named her poster 'Peace in our Hands', which features a shadow puppet of a peace dove above a broken nuclear weapon.

7. Mr. Bharat Vasani conferred with the Harvard Law School’s Professional Excellence Award

Mr. Bharat Vasani, Chief, Legal and Group General Counsel, Tata Sons has been conferred with the Harvard Law School’s Center on the Legal Profession’s (CLP) Award for Professional Excellence.

Mr. Vasani has been heading the legal function at the Tata group for more than a decade. He has been recognized by the CLP as one of the many distinguished lawyers who are making important contributions around the world.

8. US mission in India wins annual greening diplomacy award


The American diplomatic mission in India has won the prestigious greening diplomacy initiative award of the State Department for its innovative whole-of-country approach to greening. 

In a statement, the State Department said the one particular category of the GDI Award chosen by employee vote, went for include Mission India for an innovative whole-of-country approach to greening. 

Indian-American Richard Verma is the current US Ambassador to India. 

Each Earth Day, GDI Awards recognise innovative leadership within the Department of State in energy and environmental diplomacy. 

Since 2009, GDI has been the Department's effort to support environmental policy priorities and catalyze climate action in host countries through leveraging the United States' embassies and consulates.
