1. Tabla maestro Pandit Lacchu Maharaj dies in Varanasi
Famous Tabla maestro Pandit Lacchu Maharaj died. He was 72.
Other than his professional performances all over the world, he played the tabla in many Bollywood films.
2. Four new writers get Jananpith 'Navlekhan' award
Four writers, three of them from Rajasthan, were given the Bharatiya Jnanpith's 11th Navlekhan award for the year 2015 in a ceremony.
Amlendu Tiwari and Balram Kawant were awarded for their respective novels 'Parityakt', and 'Sara Morila,' while Om Naagar and Tasneem Khan were awarded for their non-fictions 'Nib Ke Chire Se' and 'Yeh Mere Rahnuma' respectively.
3. First woman head of aviation regulator moves out
The first woman chief of aviation regulator DGCA M Sathiyavathy was named as new Union Labour Secretary. Sathiyavathi, a 1982-batch IAS officer of the union territories cadre, was in September last year appointed as the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The Appointments Committee of Cabinet has approved her appointment as Officer on Special Duty in the Ministry of Labour and Employment with immediate effect, an order issued by Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) said.
Sathiyavathy, who was appointed as Additional Secretary and Financial Adviser to the Civil Aviation Ministry in February last year, had served as Puducherrys chief secretary before that.
4. Marathi theatre actor Nandu Pol passes away
Veteran Marathi theatre actor and founder member of 'Theatre Academy', Nandu Pol died. He was 68.
Acclaimed for his performances in several plays, Marathi films and TV serials, Pol left a indelible mark on the landscape of Marathi theatre. He also contributed backstage as a professional sound recordist.
Ghanshiram Kotwal, Tin Paishacha Tamasha and Mahanirvan were among the popular plays that he acted in.
Pol also acted in Marathi films such as "Samna", "Sinhasan", "Gadhavache Lagna" and "Pak Pak Pakak".
5. Australia's Nathan Lyon Enters 200 Wicket-Club in Tests
Australia's Nathan Lyon became the country's first off-spinner to bag 200 Test wickets, during his team's first Test against Sri Lanka in Pallekele.
Lyon claimed Sri Lanka's Dhananjaya de Silva, who was caught at midoff, to reach the milestone in the second session of the third day's play, triggering celebrations in the Aussie camp.
Lyon, who had already passed former Australian off-spinner Hugh Trumble's tally of 141 wickets, has now picked up five wickets in the game which looks evenly balanced.
Lyon, playing in his 55th Test, made his debut in 2011 in Sri Lanka's Galle, the venue for the next match in the series.
6. LIC signs up Axis Bank as bancassurance partner
India's largest insurer Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has signed an agreement with private sector lender Axis Bank as its bancassurance partner wherein the bank will distribute LIC's products to its customers.
In the preliminary phase, the bank will distribute LIC’s life insurance products across its branches in West Bengal, Bangalore and Haryana – Panchkula. Additionally, the bank will also provide post sales services such as premium collection and renewal of policies.
In a statement, LIC said that this is one of the largest bancassurance partnerships after the recent Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) regulations issued on open architecture framework for banks. As on June 30, 2016, Axis Bank had a network of 3,006 domestic branches and extension counters situated in 1,882 centres.
Mukesh Gupta, Executive Director, Bancassurance, LIC said that the coming together of the two major reputed organisations would enable them to combine and utilise the synergies for enhancing customer satisfaction and for serving social objectives of the nation.
From April 1, norms have been revised under which corporate agents like banks are allowed to tie-up with three life, three non-life and three standalone health insurance companies.
