1. Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar in Forbes list of world’s 100 highest-paid celebs


Bollywood superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar are among the world’s highest-paid celebrities of 2016, according to an annual list by Forbes.
The list has been topped by American singer Taylor Swift with an earning of USD 170 million.
Shah Rukh ranks 86th on the list with earnings of USD 33 million, while Akshay comes in on the 94th spot with USD 31.5 million earnings.

Forbes said the “Fan” star “continues to rule Bollywood’s box office” with lead roles in hit films and also earns multimillion dollars upfront fees and a cut of the back end for his efforts.
“He also cashes in on endorsement deals for dozens of brands most Americans have likely never heard of,” Forbes said.
Akshay, 48, however slipped in ranks this year from 76th in 2015, Forbes said adding that he is one of Bollywood’s busiest leading men and banked top rupee for three hit films.

“The action star bolsters his earnings endorsing a wider range of products than most Hollywood shills including motorcycles and gold loan company.”
English-Irish boy band One Direction has claimed the second spot on the list with earnings of USD 110 million.



2. Nepal’s first female chief justice takes oath 



 
After its first female President and Parliament speaker, Nepal will now have its first woman Supreme Court Chief Justice after Sushila Karki formally assumed office.

3. Myntra acquires Cubeit for undisclosed amount 


 
Fashion e-tailer Myntra acquired Bengaluru-based Cubeit for an undisclosed sum to focus on content aggregation on mobile.

4. Alappuzha, Panaji, Mysuru cleanest cities in India: Survey 


 
Alappuzha in Kerala, Panaji and Mysuru have been chosen the cleanest cities in India and on the other hand Delhi is placed last in a survey based on solid waste management practises by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE).

5. Essel Infraprojects Limited Conferred with the Prestigious Golden Peacock Eco-Innovation Award 


 
Essel Infraprojects Limited has been awarded with the prestigious Golden Peacock Eco-Innovative award 2016 for the performance in the field of clean energy and environment protection.

6. President confers 51st Jnanpith Award on Dr. Raghuveer Chaudhari 


 
President Pranab Mukherjee conferred the 51st Jnanpith Award on renowned Gujarati writer Dr. Raghuveer Chaudhari at Parliament Library Building, New Delhi. He was awarded with the India's highest literary honour for the year 2015.

He was given a cash prize, a citation plaque and a bronze replica of Goddess Saraswati.

With this, he also became the fourth Gujarati literary artist to receive the prestigious award. The other Gujarati recipients of the award are poet Umashankar Joshi (1967), novelist Pannalal Patel (1985) and poet Rajendra Shah (2001).

Dr. Raghuveer Chaudhari

• Born in 1938, the Gujarati writer is a Gandhian and his works are largely influenced by literary figures like Kaka Kalelkar.

• Chaudhari’s most significant contributions have been in Gujarati language but he has also written Hindi articles.

• His most noted works include novels Amruta, Venu Vatsala and Uparvas.

• He had also received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1977, for his novel trilogy Uparvas.

• He was a teacher at the Gujarat University until his retirement in 1998 as a professor and the head of Department of Hindi.

• Raghuveer Chaudhari started his career writing novels and poetry, and later ventured into other forms of literature.

• He authored more than 80 books and received numerous literary awards.

• He also served for many literary organisations.

• He was one of the many participants of the Navnirman Movement and voiced openly against Emergency in the 1970s.

• At present, he is a trustee of the Gujarati Sahitya Parishad, a noted literary institution in the state, of which he was elected the president 2001.

• He served for the executive council of Sahitya Akademi from 1998 to 2002.

• He was a member of the Press Council of India from 2002 to 2004 and was also appointed as a jury member of the 25th Indian Film Festival.

• Between 1965 and 1970, he won numerous prizes awarded annually by the Gujarat government.

• Some of awards conferred on him include

a) Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak in 1975

b) Munshi Award in 1997

c) Sauhard Samman from Uttar Pradesh Hindi Sansthaan in 1990

d) Narmad Award in 2010

e) Uma-Snehrashmi Prize in 1975

f) Ranjitram Gold Medal in 1975

About Jnanpith Award

Jnanpith Award is one of the prestigious literary awards in India. The name of award is taken from Sanskrit words Jnana and Pitha which means knowledge-seat. It was instituted in 1961 and is presented by Bharatiya Jnanpith, a trust founded by the Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain family.

The award is given to any Indian citizen who writes in any 22 official languages of India mentioned in VIII Schedule of Constitution of India. Prior to 1982, the award was only given for a single work by a writer. But since 1982, the award is given for lifetime contribution to Indian literature. The award includes cash prize of 11 lakh rupees, a citation plaque and a bronze replica of Saraswati.

The 50th Jnanpith award was given to Marathi writer Bhalchandra Vanaji Nemade, renowned for his books Hindu and Kosala.

7. Admiral Lanba commissions Marine Commandos unit INS Karna 



Admiral Sunil Lanba, the Chief of Naval Staff, commissioned the Marine Commandos (MARCOS-East) unit as INS Karna at a function at INS Kalinga in the district.

"The MARCOS unit over the years has grown into a front line operational unit and is mandated to undertake special operations in the entire area of the Eastern Naval Command (ENC)," Lanba said.

As per a Defence release, MARCOS East was raised on October 26, 1992 and since then it has been the primary special operations unit in ENC.

Lanba said the unit has been at the forefront in various operations undertaken by the Navy like Operation Zabardast (Sri Lanka February 1993), Operation Tasha (1990-2009), Operation Leech (1998) and Operation Sagittarius (anti-piracy operations in Malacca Strait).

According to him, the unit is at present involved in two major operations, including Rakshak (counter terrorist operations in Jammu and Kashmir since 1997).

8. Rio Olympics 2016: Anirban Lahiri, Shiv Chaurasia, and Aditi Ashok to represent India in golf 



Rio Olympics 2016 is less than a month away and there is one more positive news for Indian Olympic contingent. After the Indian men's 4*400m relay team clocked a record timing of 3:00.38 in the men's 4*400m relay and booked an August date at Rio yesterday, three golfers joined the largest ever contingent.Anirban Lahiri, Shiv Shankar Prasad Chawrasia, and Aditi Ashok will be going to the Summer Olympic Games based on their rankings.The cut off for the Rio Olympics is 60 in the world ranking, and it officially closes today, i.e on July 11.For the Olympics, the IOC has restricted the IGF to a field of 60 players for each of the men's and women's competition.

While Lahiri and Chowrasia almost sealed a berth before, Aditi, the 18-year-old teenager from Bangalore moved to 57 and secured a berth after the US Women's Open results last night. Liv Cheng of New Zealand, Miriam Nagl, and Victoria Lovelady are behind her.Golf is making a return to the Olympics for the first time after the 1904 St. Louis Games and this sport can be counted as one of our medal prospects, going by Anirban Lahiri’s form over the last couple of years. While a number of top-ranked male golfers have withdrawn from the Rio Games due to Zika fears, the top-ranked Indian golfer, Lahiri, currently ranked 62nd in the world, will represent India at the biggest sporting extravaganza of the world. 


9. Indian economy likely to grow 7.9% this fiscal: Crisil 

 
According to the rating agency Crisil, Indian economy is likely to grow at 7.9 per cent in the current fiscal 2016-17.
