1. Hillary makes history as first woman White House nominee 

 
Hillary Clinton made history by clinching the Democratic White House nomination, becoming the first woman to lead a major party in the US Presidential race.

Clinton, who has been Secretary of State, First Lady and Senator from New York, secured her nomination at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia after a majority of the 4,764 party delegates formally backed her.

2. Manas Kumar Thakur becomes new ICAI President 


 
Manas Kumar Thakur has been elected as the President of the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICAI) while Sanjay Gupta will be the Vice President. They have been elected for the 2016-17 period.

Gupta has been the chairman of WTO and International Affairs Committee of institute since 2011. ICAI, the apex body for cost accountants, has around 5 lakh students and 69,000 members.

3. SBI launches debit card-less instant money transfer facility 


 
State Bank launched a payment system at its ATMs which will allow the account holders transfer money using mobile phone number as identifier.

The system works on instant money transfer (IMT) platform.

The facility will enable a payment of up to Rs 10,000 from any SBI bank account and the recipient of this payment can withdraw funds instantly from an IMT-enabled ATM without using a debit card, the top lender said in a statement.

4. Rhiti Sports, Dhoni announce global partnership with Spartan 


 
Rhiti Sports, the company that manages India's limited-overs captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, has formed a partnership with international sports goods brand, Spartan.

5. Bezwada Wilson, TM Krishna win Ramon Magsaysay Award for 2016




Two Indians, human rights activist Bezwada Wilson and south Indian classical musician TM Krishna, have been conferred the Ramon Magsaysay Award for 2016.

Bezwada Wilson, who was born to a dalit family in Karnataka, has been lauded for his efforts towards "asserting the inalienable right to a life of human dignity." The Chennai-born Carnatic musician TM Krishna has been awarded for "ensuring social inclusiveness in culture."

The Ramon Magsaysay Award is an annual award, named after former Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay, to honour "greatness of spirit in selfless service to the peoples of Asia", says the web site of the foundation that selects the awardees.

The four other awardees for 2016 are Conchita Carpio-Morales from the Philippines, Indonesin Dompet Dhuafa, Vientiane Rescue from Laos and the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers.

6. Kalam's statue unveiled in Rameswaram 


 
A life-size statue of former president Dr APJ Abdul Kalam was unveiled at Peikarumbu on the occasion of his first death anniversary.

Inaugurating the bronze statue, Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said, "Dr. Kalam will live forever in our minds and hearts. His thoughts continue to be with us all the time.

"It is difficult still to believe that Dr. Kalam passed away and that this great man left all of us for his heavenly abode," he said.

Naidu and Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar also laid the foundation stone for a national memorial for the 'Missile man' of India, here.

Kalam passed away on July 27 last year after he suffered a massive cardiac arrest while delivering a lecture at IIM- Shillong in Meghalaya.

7. Muralidaran, three others to be inducted into ICC Hall of Fame 


 
Sri Lankan spin legend Muttiah Muralidaran, along with three others, will be inducted into the International Cricket Council's Hall of Fame later this year.

"The International Cricket Council today announced that Muttiah Muralidaran, Karen Rolton, Arthur Morris and George Lohmann will be inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame later this year," the ICC said in a statement.

Record-breaking off-spinner Muralidaran becomes the first Sri Lankan player to be inducted along with twice ICC Women's World Cup winner and former Australia captain Karen Rolton,her compatriot Arthur Morris, a member of Don Bradman's 'invincibles' and England's George Lohmann, the 19th century fast bowler who took 100 wickets in just 16 Tests.

The four iconic cricketers were voted by the ICC Cricket Hall of Famers as well as members of the media. They will be presented with commemorative caps honouring their contribution to the game to mark their induction. Family members will represent Lohmann and Morris at the presentations.

8. Forbes India 'Super 50' list: TCS, Infosys in 


 
Software majors TCS and Infosys, pharma giants Sun Pharma and Lupin and private sector lenders HDFC Bank and Axis Bank feature in Forbes India's Super 50 List this year, while biggies like Tata Motors and HUL have been dropped.

The list, in its second year, also features 14 newcomers, including Infosys, Maruti Suzuki, Bharat Forge, Alembic Pharma, Gillette India, HDFC Bank, Bajaj Finance, Kansai Nerolac and LIC Housing Finance, among others.

Companies which have been dropped from the list include Tata Motors, Hindustan Unilever, MRF, Glaxo SmithKline Consumer Healthcare, Pfizer, Dr Reddy's Labs, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals, HDFC and Kotak Mahindra Bank.

The three-stage methodology followed by Forbes together with PwC India uses a set of eliminators to arrive at a critical mass of companies, which was then subjected to the tests of market capitalisation growth, sales growth CAGR and return on equity over a three-year period to ensure consistency in performance.
