Dipa Karmakar, the first Indian woman to qualify for the gymnastics event in the Olympics, was officially named a "World Class Gymnast", by the governing body of world gymnastics, Federation de Internationale de Gymnastique, on Wednesday.

It is awarded to the top 30 qualifiers in multiple apparatus events or to event finalists at Worlds and is a once-in-a-career induction into gymnastics’ elite. “It’s common for gymnasts from Russia, US, Japan and China. But it’s a big thing for Indian gymnastics,” Dipa’s coach BS Nandy said.
Karmakar became the first Indian woman to qualify for the Olympics after winning gold at the the World Artistic Gymnastic.
