Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq became the oldest captain to score a century in test cricket. He created this world record on the first day of test match against England in the famous Lords cricket Stadium.
2. Senior RSS leader Praful Doshi passes away
Senior RSS leader Prafulbhai Doshi passed away. He was 77.
Dev, an IAS officer of 1987 batch from UT cadre, was appointed Deputy Election Commissioner for a period of five years in place of Vinod Zutshi, who was appointed as Secretary Tourism earlier.
1986 batch officer of Maharashtra cadre, Jayshree Mukherjee, has been appointed as Additional Secretary in Information and Broadcasting Ministry replacing Jitendra Shankar Mathur who is appointed as Secretary, Ministry of Panchayati Raj.
3. Cairn India bags the 'BT-CSR Excellence Award'
Oil and gas exploration and production major Cairn India has bagged the ‘Bureaucracy Today-CSR Excellence Award’ in the Skill Development category.
The award was given by the Chief Guest, Shri AnantGeete, Union Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises to Mr. Manoj Agarwal, Head - Business Development & Public Affairs, Cairn India, at an event. The event witnessed a tough competition with over 350companies pitching for the prestigious BT-CSR Excellence Awards 2016. Besides Cairn India, some of the other winners include TATA BSS, Lafarge, Hindustan Petroleum, Essar Foundation and Cochin Shipyard Limited.
The eminent jury members for BT-CSR Excellence Awards-2016 program comprised Mr. Sunil Kanoria, President, ASSOCHAM, Dr Arbind Prasad, DG, FICCI, Mr. Ajay Shriram, President, CII (2014-2015) Mr. Sunil Arora, IAS (R ), former Secretary Information and Broadcasting Ministry Mr. RS Sharma, former CMD, ONGC Mr. KhurshidGanai, IAS, Chairman J&K Public Service Commission. Cairn India was conferred with the award for its outstanding CSR initiatives including skill development of youth of Rajasthan and nearby States. With a view to train local youth and provide them with employment opportunities, the company established the Cairn Enterprise Centre (CEC) in partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank, and the Dept. of Technical Education (DTE), Govt. of Rajasthan in 2007. Over 12,000 youth have been trained at the centre, in Barmer.
4. Aziz Ansari creates history, becomes first Indian-American to bag Emmy nod
Aziz Ansari has made history as he has become the first Indian-American actor to land a lead comedy-acting Emmy nomination for his series "Master of None".
Ansari is also just the fifth person of South Asian descent to be nominated in an acting category.
Ansari, who is also nominated for writing and directing "Master of None", co-created the Netflix comedy with Alan Yang.
5. Harika Dronavalli captures Chengdu GP chess title
India's Grand Master Harika Dronavalli won the coveted Fide Women's Grand Prix chess title.
Harika, playing with white against Russia's Olga Girya, had to dig deep to pull off the much needed draw to win the title, her maiden career GP title.
Harika finished on seven points in the round robin tournament featuring the world's top 12 players to be crowned the chess queen in Chengdu.
6. India felicitated with the Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus Elimination (MNTE) and yaws-free status
WHO and UNICEF felicitated India with the Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus Elimination (MNTE) and yaws-free status. India is the first country to be officially acknowledged as being Yaws-free.
India was validated for Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus Elimination (MNTE) in April 2015, much ahead of the global target date of December 2015.
7. Rakesh Kumar Chaturvedi new CBSE chairman
Rakesh Kumar Chaturvedi was appointed as new Chairman of CBSE and Vijay Kumar Dev the new Deputy Election Commissioner as a bureaucratic reshuffle of 19 Additional Secretaries and 29 Joint Secretaries was carried out.
Chaturvedi, a 1987 batch IAS officer of Madhya Pradesh, has been appointed for a period of five years, an official order said.
Girish Chandra Murmu, Principal Secretary of Narendra Modi during his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister, was shifted from Department of Expenditure to Department of Financial Services.
Pramod Kumar Das will be the new Additional Secretary of Department of Expenditure in Ministry of Finance.
Guruprasad Mohapatra, a Gujarat cadre IAS officer of 1986 batch, has been appointed as Chairman of Airports Authority in place of R K Shrivastava, who was unceremoniously removed from the post on March 17.
