1. First batch of three female fighter pilots commissioned


Creating history, the first batch of three female pilots — Avani Chaturvedi, Bhawana Kanth and Mohana Singh were inducted in Indian Air Force fighter squadron.

On successful completion of their training, the trio were formally commissioned by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar. Being the first to break barriers, they were the cynosure of all eyes at the parade in their immaculate turnout. On completion of their Stage III training at Bidar in adjoining Karnataka next year, they will get to fly fighter jets like the Sukhoi and Tejas.

The achievement of the three is a significant milestone for the Indian military, as this is the first time it has permitted women into combat roles.

2. Microsoft acquires messaging start-up founded by IIT alumnus

Technology giant Microsoft has acquired a messaging-app developer founded by an Indian as the US-based software firm aims to strengthen its position in the emerging era of combining the power of human language with advanced machine intelligence. 

Microsoft acquired California-based Wand Labs, a start-up which builds messaging technology for apps, founded in 2013 by IIT-Delhi alumnus Vishal Sharma who was previously the vice president, products at Google. 

3. Jamia Millia signs MoU with Iranian institute

Jamia Millia Islamia has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Tehran's National Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (NIGEB) for academic cooperation.

The MoU will enable the two institutions to jointly undertake research activities in the frontier areas of genetic engineering and biotechnology, a Jamia Millia statement said.

4. PM Modi, Sri Lankan President inaugurate stadium in Jaffna renovated by India

Modi, along with Sirisena, inaugurated the Duraiappah Stadium, named in honour of a former Mayor of Jaffna late Alfred Thambirajah Duraiappah.

The stadium, in disuse since 1997, has been renovated by the Indian government at a cost of over Rs 7 crore.

5. India settle for maiden silver medal in champions trophy

India were pipped by reigning world champions Australia 1-3 via penalty shootout to settle for their maiden silver medal in the Hockey Champions Trophy.

India won its maiden silver medal in the final match of 36th Hero Champions Trophy.
