1.Thiruvananthapuram stadium wins global award
The Sports Hub, Thiruvananthapuram, a joint initiative by IL&FS and the state government, has bagged the David Vickers Award in the 'new venue of the year', beating several stadiums around the world.
Now in their seventh year, the 'Stadium Business Awards' are recognized around the world and this is the first time an Indian venue has won it.
The award was announced at the world famous Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid, Spain, on June 1, according to a press release issued here by the Sports Hub on Tuesday.
Located near the Technopark campus in the capital city, this modern sports complex built at a cost of Rs.345 crores, has a 50,000 seating capacity state-of-the-art stadium which has hosted both cricket and football matches. It is equipped with multi-use facilities such as an indoor sports arena, club house, guest rooms, convention centre, retail complex and many other facilities.
This stadium was first thrown open to hold the opening and closing ceremonies of the 35th National Games held in the state in 2015.
Following which it was closed to complete the remaining work and is now ICC and FIFA compliant.
To win this award, the Sports Hub beat top venues in the US, France, Japan and Turkey.
2. Government of India and Asian Development Bank Sign $120 Million Loan Agreement to Modernize Irrigation and Improve Water Management in Odisha
Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed a $120 million loan agreement to improve irrigation and water management infrastructure in Odisha.
The loan is the second tranche of a $157.5 million financing facility under the Orissa Integrated Irrigated Agriculture and Water Management Investment Program. The financing will be used for modernizing seven irrigation subprojects resulting in improved irrigation in over 100,000 hectares, and strengthening of Water User Associations (WUAs) and the institutional capacity of Odisha’s Department of Water Resources. The selected areas for the investment program are the Baitarani, Brahmani, Budhabalanga, and Subernarekha river basins and part of the Mahanadi delta.
3. Kenneth Cole named UNAIDS international goodwill ambassador
Fashion designer and AIDS activist Kenneth Cole was named an international goodwill ambassador by the head of the UN's AIDS-fighting organisation.
The appointment by UNAIDS chief Michel Sidibe came on the eve of the UN General Assembly's high-level meeting on ending AIDS.
Cole told reporters at a news conference at UN headquarters he hopes to combine his United Nations work with his work at The Foundation for AIDS Research, known as amfAR, and its goal of finding a cure for the disease by 2020.
Cole has long been involved in the global effort to end HIV and AIDS, joining the board of amfAR in 1987 and initiating its public awareness campaigns. He later became chairman.
4. President Pranab Mukherjee to get the highest award of Ivory Coast
President Pranab Mukherjee will be presented National Order of the Republic of Ivory Coast, the highest award of the West African country where he will be on a two day visit starting June 14.
It will be the first ever high level visit from India to Ivory Coast. Mukherjee has been invited by Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara.
5. Arundhati Bhattacharya 5th most powerful woman in finance: Forbes
Arundhati Bhattacharya , the first woman chairperson of the nation's largest bank SBI , has been ranked among the top five most powerful women in finance by the Forbes magazine.
Bhattacharya has moved up five spots from the previous year to 5th this year, SBI said in a statement.
She is also ranked 25th in Forbes' list of 'The World's 100 Most Powerful Women', which which includes four Indian Women. The list features top female leaders, entrepreneurs, investors, scientists, philanthropists and CEOs. Others are Chanda Kochhar of ICICI Bank (40th), Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw of Biocon (77th), and Shobhana Bhartia of HT Media (93rd).
Bhattacharya has been instrumental in transforming the over 200 year-old bank into technology-driven lender with SBIiNTOUCH digital banking outlet, mobile wallet State Bank Buddy, State Bank Anywhere - a retail internet banking based application for smartphones, SBI Tech Learning Centres for educating customers and SBI e-Pay, a payment aggregator service, among others.
6. Indian-origin professor Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya awarded Regius Professorship by Queen
Eminent Indian-origin professor Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya has been awarded the prestigious Regius Professorship in Manufacturing by Queen Elizabeth II for his outstanding contribution in manufacturing.
“WMG, at the University of Warwick, which was founded by eminent Indian Professor Lord Bhattacharyya, has been bestowed the prestigious Regius Professorship in Manufacturing by Her Majesty the Queen,” a release said on Tuesday.
Through his career, he has advised the UK government on manufacturing, innovation, and technology, including former Prime Ministers Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair.
7. Shri Piyush Goyal Launches “SURYAMITRA” Mobile App
Shri Piyush Goyal, Minister of State (IC) for Power, Coal and New & Renewable Energy launched “Surya Mitra” mobile App at National Workshop on Rooftop Solar Power here today. The GPS based mobile app is developed by National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) which is an autonomous institution of Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE).
