1. Israel elected to head permanent U.N. committee for first time 

 
Israel has been elected to head the United Nations' legal committee. It is the first time that Israel will head one of the world body's six permanent committees since joining the U.N. in 1949.


2. Microsoft agrees to buy LinkedIn for $26.2 billion 



Microsoft has announced it will buy enterprise social network LinkedIn in a deal valued at $26.2 billion. The tech giant's biggest purchase comes under Chief Executive Satya Nadella who is reshaping Microsoft since taking over in 2014 to appeal more to business customers with cloudbased services and productivity tools. In a memo to Microsoft staff, Nadella described the deal as "key to our bold ambition to reinvent productivity and business processes".

Microsoft will pay $196 per share in an all-cash deal, including LinkedIn's net cash. This is a 49.5% premium to the social network's closing price on Friday.

LinkedIn will retain its brand, culture and independence and Jeff Weiner will remain the chief executive officer, Microsoft said. The offer values LinkedIn about 91 times earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation,according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

3. Dell partners with Shiv Nadar University for research 



Dell and Shiv Nadar University have signed an agreement to collaborate and drive research and innovation, a statement said here on Monday.

Under this agreement, Dell will engage with faculty members at the university to mentor students and jointly work on technology projects in areas such as big data, cloud computing and Internet of Things.

Through this partnership, Dell has set up two laboratories jointly with the university to integrate theoretical concepts with practical experience.

5. India and Ghana signed three MoUs 



India and Ghana signed three MoUs including the waiver of visa for diplomatic and official passports, establishment of a joint commission to periodically monitor various aspects of multidimensional relationship, and helping in training of Ghanaian Foreign services.

6. DCB Bank launches Aadhaar-based ATM in Bengaluru 



DCB Bank launched its first Aadhaar-based ATM in Bengaluru. This ATM accepts Aadhaar number and Aadhaar fingerprint (biometric) to dispense cash and it will not require any ATM/Debit Card and PIN.

7. AirAsia Group chief Tony Fernandes gets OCI status 



Tony Fernandes, group CEO of Malaysia's AirAsia, has been given the 'Overseas Citizenship of India' (OCI) status by the Indian Government.

8. India's WPI-based inflation at 0.79% in May 


 
India's annual rate of inflation, based on monthly wholesale price index (WPI), stood at 0.79 per cent for May 2016 (over May 2015), according to the provisional data released by the Office of the Economic Adviser, Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

In comparison, annual rate of inflation was 0.34 per cent for April 2016 and minus 2.20 per cent during May 2015. Build up inflation rate in the financial year 2016-17 so far was 2.34 per cent compared to a build up rate of 1.08 per cent in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Meanwhile, the official WPI for all commodities (Base: 2004-05 = 100) for the month of May, 2016 rose by 1.4 per cent to 179.4 from 177.0 for the previous month.

The index for manufactured products (weight 64.97 per cent) for May, 2016 rose by 0.5 per cent to 155.7 from 155.0 for the previous month. The index for textiles sub-group rose by 0.5 per cent to 140.6 from 139.9 for the previous month due to higher price of jute sacking bag (3 per cent), gunny and hessian cloth (2 per cent) and cotton yarn and cotton fabric (1 per cent each).

The index for primary articles (weight 20.12 per cent) rose by 2.4 per cent to 255.3 from 249.3 for the previous month. On the other hand, the index for fuel and power (weight 14.91 per cent) rose by 2.8 per cent to 180.3 from 175.4 for the previous month due to higher prices of furnace oil, high speed diesel, kerosene, aviation turbine fuel, petrol and bitumen.

Meanwhile, the all-India consumer price index (CPI) on base 2012=100 stood at 5.76 (provisional) in May, 2016 compared to 5.47 in April, 2016 and 5.01 in May, 2015, according to the Central Statistics Office, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.

9. IIT Madras, Kanpur break into top-50 in QS University Rankings Asia 2016 



Two more Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) broke into the top-50 in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) University Rankings Asia 2016.

IIT Madras and IIT Kanpur jumped 13 and 10 places, respectively, to be ranked in the top 50 universities’ rankings among Asian countries by QS, global higher education analysts. As against its rank of 56 in 2015, IIT Madras was placed at 43 this year, while IIT Kanpur got ranked 48th in 2016, up from 58 last year.

Among Indian universities featuring in the top-50 list in the QS University Rankings Asia, IIT Bombay and IIT Madras joined the likes of Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore (33), IIT Bombay (35) and IIT Delhi (36).

Further, two Indian universities debuted the rankings this year — Amrita University, which ranked a joint 169th, and Andhra University, which debuted in the 301st-350th band. The biggest leap among Indian universities was seen by the University of Delhi and the University of Calcutta wherein the former rose by 25 places to 66th, the latter jumped 41 places to 108th.

India’s performance as a nation is the 5th-best of the 17 countries that feature in the rankings. With 23 universities, it is outperformed by Taiwan (34), South Korea (54), Japan (72), and China (82). Eleven Indian universities score the benchmark score of 100.0 for QS.

In the overall rankings, the National University of Singapore and University of Hong Kong retained their first and second positions, respectively, for this year.

The QS University Rankings Asia was expanded this year to include the region’s 350 best universities and an expansion of 50 on the previous year. The rankings also saw methodological enhancements this year, introducing staff with PhD in order to add another dimension to the analyses of teaching quality their rankings provide.
