1. Guwahati becomes first city to have 'City Animal'
Guwahati, Assam became the first city in the country to have its own City Animal with the Kamrup Metropolitan district administration declaring the Gangetic river dolphin as the mascot.
In a press conference, Kamrup Metropolitan Deputy Commissioner M Angamuthu said that the animal, locally known as 'Sihu', would be the 'City Animal' of Guwahati.
The district administration had organised online and off-line voting among three protected creatures, which are on the verge of extinction, to decide the mascot.
Along with Gangetic river dolphin, the other two animals were black softshell turtle (Bor Kaso) and greater adjutant stork (Hargila).
While less than 2,000 Gangetic river dolphins remain in the Brahmaputra along Guwahati, a recent survey said only a small population of black softshell turtle were found in the river and its tributaries.
The number of greater adjutant stork is less than 1,200 in and around the state capital.
The three-month long voting process attracted 60,003 participants to decide the City Animal and Gangetic river dolphin received 24,247 votes.
While greater adjutant stork got 18,454 votes, black softshell turtle was the choice of 17,302 people.
2. NSDC names Manish Kumar CEO, Jayant Krishna as COO
The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), a PPP body under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, announced appointment of Manish Kumar as MD and CEO and Jayant Krishna as ED and Chief Operating Officer (COO).
NSDC's former MD and CEO Dilip Chenoy and former COO Atul Bhatnagar, both appointees of the previous UPA government, resigned last October. Krishna was named the interim CEO in November.
Even Union Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Rajiv Pratap Rudy is reported to have expressed displeasure at the way the NSDC was run in the past, who had spoken about its failure to meet the industry need for trained manpower.
Kumar is a 1991 batch IAS officer who comes to the helm of NSDC with over 24 years of experience.
Krishna has an overall industry experience of more than 29 years and has worked with TCS and held various key positions.
3. Dell ‘Aarambh’ initiative to promote use of PC for education
In line with the government’s Digital India campaign, computer technology giant Dell has announced the launch of Aarambh – a pan-India initiative aimed at spearheading the use of personal computer (PC) for education.
Dell’s ‘Aarambh’ initiative was aimed at exposing students to interactive methods of learning in the developmental years to contribute to the well-rounded growth of a student.
Through Aarambh, Dell will engage with three key audiences — students, teachers and parents — in a series of activities meant to build their confidence and familiarity with using the PC.
The programnme aims to enable both parents and teachers to actively aid in the educational development of the child, while using a PC and create an encompassing ecosystem and supportive background for the child.
The year-long project aims to reach one million students and 1, 00,000 teachers across 5,000 schools; and 2, 00,000 parents in 75 cities across the country.
4. Indian, South Korean coast guards to jointly hold naval exercise
The coast guards of India and South Korea will hold a joint exercise 'Sshyog-Hyeoblyeog-2016' in Chennai from June 8 to 11.
"The aim of the exercise is to strengthen the working level relationship between the two coast guards and further refine the joint operating procedures."
Korea Coast Guard ship 3009 will participate in the exercise, whose highlights encompass an anti-piracy scenario wherein the hijacked vessel is subsequently rescued in a combined operation of both coast guards, the interdiction of the pirate vessel, a joint boarding operation and other exercises.
In addition, the Indian Coast Guard ships and aircraft will be demonstrating their prowess before the Korean delegation.
The exercise would be jointly witnessed by the Indian Coast Guard's Director General Rajendra Singh, and his counterpart, Korea Coast Guard's Commissioner General Hong Ik-tae.
5. US Army Reserve officer Deshauna Barber crowned as Miss USA 2016
Deshauna Barber, a serving Army Reserve officer of United States (US), was crowned as the Miss USA 2016 at the Miss USA competition 2016 held at the T-Mobile Arena off the Las Vegas Strip.
She represented the US capital as Miss District of Columbia. Miss Hawaii Chelsea Hardin came in as the first runner-up and Miss Georgia Emanii Davis was the second runner-up.
With this, Barber became the first-ever military member to win Miss USA title. She will now represent the USA at Miss Universe Competition 2016.
Barber inherited the crown from 2015 winner Miss Oklahoma Olivia Jordan. Barber works as an IT analyst at the US Department of Commerce. She was commissioned as a Quartermaster Officer in 2011 in the Army Reserve of US. She is currently a Logistics Commander for the 988th Quartermaster Detachment Unit based at Fort Meade, Maryland. She is a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority.
She was crowned as Miss District of Columbia USA 2016 in December 2015 by outgoing titleholder Lizzy Olsen.
6. Serena Williams dethrones Maria Sharapova as world's highest paid female athlete
Serena Williams has claimed the top spot in terms of being the world's highest paid female athlete.
According to Forbes magazine, Williams has beaten out fellow tennis player Maria Sharapova for the number one spot.
Williams' overtaking ends Sharapova's 11-year run atop the list, as she earned US$28.9 million (NZ$41.9M) over the past 12 months.
Sharapova, who lost sponsorship money after testing positive for recently banned substance meldonium at January's Australian Open, slips to the second spot after making US$21.9 million (NZ$31.8M) over the past year.
American mixed martial arts star Ronda Rousey owns the third spot on the list at US$14M (NZ$20.2M) after a jump from eighth last year, just ahead of fourth placed NASCAR driver Danica Patrick who earned US$13.9M (NZ$20.1M).
The rest of the women's top ten is made up of tennis players, including Spain's newly crowned French Open champion Garbine Muguruza (US$7.6 million, NZ$11M).
7. Hero MotoCorp to be title sponsor of Champions Trophy Hockey
India's two-wheeler manufacturing major Hero MotoCorp Ltd will be the title sponsor of the men's Hockey Champions Trophy 2016 which will be held in London from June 10-17.
The International Hockey Federation (FIH) confirmed that Hero MotoCorp Ltd. Will be the title sponsor of the prestigious tournament. The event will be called the 'Hero Hockey Champions Trophy 2016'.
In addition to title sponsorship of the event, Hero, the world's largest manufacturer of motorcycles and scooters, will also be a FIH lead partner of the women's Hockey Champions Trophy taking place immediately afterwards, between June 18-26 in the same venue.
8. Facebook appoints Umang Bedi as India MD
Facebook has appointed Umang Bedi as managing director India, where he will lead in building and maintaining strategic relationships with top clients and regional agencies in the country. He will take over from Kirthiga Reddy, who will be returning to United States to join the global accounts team at Menlo Park. As part of global accounts team, she will be managing Facebook’s relationships with the world's largest global advertisers.
Prior to joining Facebook, Before was the managing director of the South Asia region at Adobe. He was responsible for growing their business in India and helping India grow to amongst the leading markets for Adobe in the APAC and global regions.
