1. Antonio Guterres appointed next UN Secretary-General



Portugal’s former Prime Minister Antonio Guterres was appointed as the next Secretary-General of the United Nations by the General Assembly. The 193 member states of the powerful General Assembly adopted the resolution by acclamation, appointing 67-year-old Guterres as the 9th UN Secretary-General to take over from Ban Ki-moon, whose tenure will end on December 31.

The 15-nation UN Security Council had last week voted for Guterres by acclamation and forwarded his name to the General Assembly. Guterres, who was Prime Minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002, and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees from June 2005 to December 2015, will assume his new role on January 1, 2017 for a five-year term that can be renewed by Member States for an additional five years.

2. King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand dies aged 88



Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world’s longest-reigning monarch, died aged 88 after seven decades on the throne in which his country was transformed from a genteel Southeast Asian way station into an international hub of trade and tourism. 

In a statement, Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha, the coup leader turned prime minister, indicated that Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, long the heir apparent, would succeed to the throne as envisaged. 

3. India home to 4th largest population of HNWIs in APAC: Report



India is home to the fourth largest population of high net worth individuals (HNWI) in the Asia Pacific region, with total wealth of USD 797 billion, says a report. 

The number of HNWIs in India jumped to 2 lakh last year from 1.8 lakh in 2014, while their overall wealth rose by 1.6 per cent during the same period, according to the Asia-Pacific Wealth Report 2016, a report by Capgemini. Japan has the maximum number of HNWI population in Asia-Pacific at over 27 lakh followed by China at more than 10 lakh in 2015 and Australia 2.3 lakh. 

The HNWI wealth in Japan rose by 11.4 per cent to USD 6,571 billion, while that in China surged 16.9 per cent to USD 5,261 billion. 

One year after recording the highest population of high net worth individuals (HNWI), Asia-Pacific region now leads the world with the largest amount of HNWI wealth, according to the report. 

Asia-Pacific HNWI wealth grew 9.9 per cent in 2015 to USD 17.4 trillion, growing 5.8 times the 1.7 per cent Rest of the World (RoW) growth rate. 

HNWI population grew by 9.4 per cent to surpass 5 million, growing 3.5 times the RoW growth rate of 2.7 per cent. 

4. Ajay Kumar Bhalla appointed new DGFT



Senior IAS officer Ajay Kumar Bhalla was appointed as Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).

Bhalla, a 1984 batch IAS officer of Assam-Meghalaya cadre, is presently Additional Secretary in Commerce Ministry.

He has been appointed to the post in place of Anup Wadhawan, who has been appointed as Additional Secretary in the Commerce Ministry, an order issued by Department of Personnel and Training said.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade is entrusted with responsibilities for formulating and implementing the foreign trade policy with the main objective of promoting India's exports.

Another senior bureaucrat Inder Jit Singh has been appointed as Additional Secretary in the Commerce Ministry. He is presently working in Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

5. China to launch X-ray pulsar navigation satellite next month



China plans to launch an X-ray pulsar navigation satellite next month to test autonomous spacecraft navigation, the country's Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) Fifth Academy said. 

X-ray pulsar navigation is an innovative navigation technique in which periodic X-ray signals emitted from pulsars are used to determine the location of a spacecraft in deep space, said Shuai Ping, chief system designer of the satellite.

The satellite (XPNAV-1), developed by CASC Fifth Academy, weighs more than 200 kilogrammes and carries two detectors, state run Xinhua news agency reported. 

In its mission, the satellite will test the detectors' functions in responding to the background noise of the universe, outline pulsar contours, and create a database for pulsar navigation, the academy said. 

X-ray pulsar navigation techniques will help reduce the reliance of spacecraft on ground-based navigation methods and are expected to achieve autonomous spacecraft navigation in the future, it said.

6. Azhar Ali becomes first centurion in Day-Night Test cricket



Pakistan vice-Captain Azhar Ali has scored the first ever century in a Day-Night Test match. Azhar scored his century off just 184 balls with the help of ten boundaries.

In a historic partnership between the two Pakistan openers Azhar Ali and Sami Aslam, the team has until now scored 191 runs without losing a wicket. In this first match with the Pink ball, Pakistan openers have set up a legendary partnership which also broke the record for the highest opening partnership on DSC ground.

The openers are still going on and Sami Aslam is also batting at 84 now off 199 balls with the help of 8 boundaries. It’s been a tough day for the West Indies bowlers while the Pakistan batsmen are having some fantastic time with no wickets falling in the first two session and the hosts still dominating the third as well.

7. Valvoline ropes in Virat Kohli as brand ambassador



In an aggressive move that signals its serious intent to be a major player in the highly competitive engine oil category in the country, Valvoline Cummins India has signed up India Test captain Virat Kohli as its ambassador.

As part of the association, Kohli will be the face of Valvoline engine oils and lubricants range.
