1. Govt appoints G Mahalingam as Sebi Whole-Time Member

Government has appointed Reserve Bank's Executive Director G Mahalingam as a Whole-Time Member of markets regulator Sebi.

Apart from the Chairman, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) can have three Whole-Time Members (WTMs). Mahalingam’s appointment follows the retirement of Prashant Saran as WTM in June this year. 

In a recent notification, the Finance Ministry said Gurumoorthy Mahalingam has been appointed as WTM for a period of five years or till he attains the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier. He would be getting a consolidated monthly salary of Rs 3.75 lakh. 

2. Former NC MP Mohammad Shafi Bhat dead

Senior National Conference leader and former MP Mohammad Shafi Bhat died. Bhat was 71.

A law graduate, Bhat joined National Conference decades ago and got elected to the Lok Sabha on the party ticket from Srinagar parliamentary constituency in 1989.

3. Nishank awarded by Ugandan government for his literary work

Former Uttarakhand chief minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank has been conferred with a prestigious award by the Ugandan government for promoting human values through his literature. 

Nishank, who is currently a BJP MP from Haridwar, has authored a number of books and anthologies. 

Honouring the former chief minister with the award in recognition of his literary work at Kampala, the Ugandan Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda said Nishanks literary oeuvre bears testimony to the fact that despite being a politician he attaches utmost importance to promotion of human values in life, a statement from the MPs office said. 

4. Nobel Prize winning Italian playwright Dario Fo dead

Italian playwright and actor Dario Fo, who won the Nobel prize for literature in 1997, has died. He was 90.

5. India, Hungary to sign MoU on water management

The Union Cabinet gave its nod for signing of an agreement with Hungary for cooperation in the field of water resources, including innovations in irrigation technology.

The MoU will be signed between Ministry of Water Resources and Ganga Rejuvenation and the Ministry of Interior, Hungary. It will enhance bilateral cooperation in the field of water management, on the basis of equality and mutual benefits.

6. Bob Dylan wins Nobel prize in literature 2016 

The American singer songwriter Bob Dylan has won the 2016 Nobel prize for literature.
