1. Eminent author Padma Sachdev gets Saraswati Samman



Jammu-based poet and novelist Padma Sachdev was awarded the prestigious Saraswati Samman for the year 2015 for her autobiography Chitt-Chete in Dogri language.

The 76-year-old writer’s autobiography, published in 2007, was shortlisted from 22 works written in as many languages published between 2005 and 2014.

2. Indian-origin software industry veteran Ajei Gopal named CEO of US firm



Ajei Gopal, 54 will become the CEO of Pennsylvania-based ANSYS with effect from January 1 next year. 

An IIT Bombay alumnus and software industry veteran has been named CEO of a leading US company that produces engineering simulation software used for testing product designs across a wide spectrum of industries including rockets and wearable technology. 

Gopal, a 25-year technology industry veteran who has served as a member of the ANSYS Board since 2011, has been appointed President and Chief Operating Officer of the company effective immediately and will continue to serve on the Board. 

James Cashman, who has served as ANSYS' Chief Executive Officer since 2000, will become Chairman of the Board of Directors, effective from January 2017.

3. Prominent women athletes conferred Biju Patnaik Sports Award



Prominent woman athlete Purnima Hembram was conferred with the prestigious Biju Patnaik Sports Award while Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also felicitated six other Odia girls, who participated in the Rio Olympics, on the National Sports Day.

4. Rajnikanth's daughter appointed UN Women's advocate for Gender



Noted filmmaker and actor Rajinikanth's daughter Aishwaryaa Rajinikanth Dhanush has been appointed UN Women's Advocate for Gender Equality and Women Empowerment in India.

5. The Health Minister launches “Mera Aspataal / My Hospital” initiative 



Shri J P Nadda, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare launched the “Mera Aspataal / My Hospital” initiative at the third National Summit on Good and Replicable Practices and Innovations in Public Health Facilities at Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh.

6. India, Myanmar join hands to promote traditional medicine



India and Myanmar have joined hands to enhance bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the field of traditional medicine.

7. Canara Bank launches UPI mobile app



Public sector Canara Bank has launched a Unified Payment Interface (UPI) app named "empower". The mobile app works on NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) platform and enables bank customers pay and collect using this single app, the bank said. The mobile app is available for download from Google play store, the bank said in a release here, adding it was launched at the Board of Directors conclave.
