1. Cipla, Godrej Consumer Products in Change the World list 




Two Indian companies - Cipla and Godrej Consumer Products have been named in Fortune magazine's 'Change the World' list of top 50 companies that are addressing global social problems as part of their core business strategy.

The second annual Change the World list is topped by UKs GlaxoSmithkline, followed by Israel-based IDE Technologies and American conglomerate General Electric at the second and third positions, respectively.

Drug major Cipla is ranked 46th while Godrej Consumer Products is placed at the 48th spot.

Other companies in the list include Gilead Sciences (4th rank), Nestle (5), Nike (6), MasterCard (7), United Technologies (8), Novozymes (9) and First Solar (10). Coca-Cola (11), Walmart (15), LinkedIn (35), PepsiCo (38) and Starbucks (45). For the list, companies with annual revenues of USD 1 billion or more were prioritised and then they were assessed on the basis of various factors including measurable social impact and business results.

About Cipla, the magazine said that more than two decades ago, a Mumbai-based 80-year-old pharmaceutical company developed a revolutionary anti-AIDS cocktail and stunned the world by offering it for as low as a dollar a day. "The move may have pushed the envelope in patent law, but it proved to be a turning point in the battle against the killer disease. Today, one in three people living with HIV across 115 countries are taking a Cipla drug," it noted.

Regarding Godrej Consumer Products, Fortune said a 119-year-old conglomerate whose businesses span from appliances to aerospace, Godrej gets nearly a quarter of its revenue from its "Good and Green" products.

2. IBM, IIT Bombay open high power computing facility on campus 




Tech major IBM and IIT Bombay announced the opening of the first Open POWER Research Facility (OPRF) at the institute to help drive further education, innovation and research with the country’s National Knowledge Network.

The network aims to interconnect all institutions of higher learning and research with a high-speed data communication network, facilitating knowledge sharing and collaborative research and innovation.

Open POWER Foundation was born out of a collaboration by IBM, NVIDIA and Mellanox, and supports open development on the POWER architecture.

OPRF has been established to provide the country’s large research and development community with technical assistance and infrastructure to further indigenous research.

So far, it has 230 members across 24 countries, and is looking at aggressively expanding its network in top tier institutions in the country.

3. ICICI goes live with banking transaction product on mobiles 





Private lender ICICI Bank has introduced a new mobile app product which allows customers to do banking transaction while using other application on mobile phones.

4. Rio 2016: Usain Bolt wins third successive 200m Gold 




Usain Bolt, added a new chapter in the history of the Olympics by winning his third gold medal in the 200-meter race.

5. Wrestler Narsingh Yadav ousted from Olympics 




Indian wrestler Narsingh Yadav has been ousted from Olympics as the CAS slapped him with a four-year ban, while hearing into the World Anti-Doping Agency's appeal against the clean chit given to him in a dope scandal by NADA.

6. Former I&B secy Sunil Arora appointed Prasar Bharati advisor 




Former Information and Broadcasting Secretary Sunil Arora has been appointed as an advisor in public broadcaster Prasar Bharati.

A 1980-batch IAS officer of Rajasthan cadre, Arora was the I&B secretary before he retired earlier this year.

7. India inks deal to ferry oil through Bangladesh 




India signed a short-term route agreement with Bangladesh to allow transport of petroleum goods from Assam to Tripura through Bangladesh.
