Former Governor of Bihar and West Bengal A R Kidwai died after brief illness at a city hospital. He was 96.
2. Deepika on Forbes' list of world's highest paid actresses
Leading Indian actress Deepika Padukone has made her debut among the world's top 10 highest paid actresses with earnings of USD 10 million dollars in a list alongside Hollywood heavyweights Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence, Julia Roberts and "Friends" star Jennifer Anniston.
Forbes said the Bangalore-bred Padukone, who made her Bollywood film debut in 2007 with Shahrukh Khan-starrer "Om Shanti Om", has "since starred in several films that have crossed the USD 150 million or 100 crore mark a barometer for box office success in India".
3. Vizag to host national Table Tennis tourney from Oct 19
The National Table Tennis tournament will be held at the Port Indoor Stadium here from October 19 to 25.
Andhra Pradesh Human Resources Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao today released the brochure of the tournament
An office-bearer of the Visakhapatnam District Table Tennis Association (VDTTA) said over 700 players (men, women, boys and girls) from 29 states and Union Territories will participate in various categories like senior, junior, sub-junior.
4. India gifts 17 fire fighting engines to Nepal
India donated 18 fire fighting engines to Nepal to be utilised mostly by newly established municipalities in and around the Kathmandu valley. Indian Ambassador to Nepal Ranjit Rae handed over the keys of the fire engines to Minister for Federal Affairs Hitraj Pandey.
5. North Korea fires submarine-launched ballistic missile towards Japan
North Korea fired a submarine-launched missile that flew about 500 km (311 miles) towards Japan, a show of improving technological capability for the isolated country that has conducted a series of launches in defiance of UN sanctions.
The ballistic missile was fired at around 5:30 a.m. (2030 GMT) from near the coastal city of Sinpo, where a submarine base is located.
6. US to issue long-awaited Diwali postal stamp
A commemorative Diwali stamp will be issued by the US this year, capping seven years-long efforts by Indian-Americans here and influential American lawmakers to have a stamp marking the Indian festival of lights, a move welcomed by the community.
The stamp that shows a photo of a traditional 'diya' lit against a sparkling gold background and the words 'Forever USA 2016' written below will be formally unveiled on October 5.
The postage stamp will be issued by the US Postal Service (USPS) from November "honouring Diwali, the festival of lights," Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney from New York said.
USPS Sally Andersen-Bruce of Connecticut photographed the diya and Greg Breeding of Virginia designed the stamp, with William Gicker of Washington serving as the project's art director.
7. Cabinet approves Agreement and the Protocol between India and Cyprus for the Avoidance of Double Taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion
India, today took another major step in the fight against tax evasion, "round tripping" and "base erosion/profit shifting". The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has given its approval for signing of an Agreement and the Protocol between the India and Cyprus for the Avoidance of Double Taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with respect to Taxes on Income.
This step follows the recent amendment of the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement with Mauritius. As in the case of Mauritius, the treaty with Cyprus had provided for residence-based taxation of capital gains. With the revision of the treaty now approved by the Cabinet, capital gains will be taxed in India for entities resident in Cyprus, subject to double tax relief.
8. FM to inaugurate BRICS meet on arbitration
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will inaugurate BRICS conference on arbitration on August 27 which will deliberate on ideas and insights regarding dispute resolution mechanism among the 5 emerging nations that form the group.
India has assumed the chairmanship of BRICS-2016 and a major political-cum-business engagement will be held here in October this year.
As a lead up to this Summit, Indian has initiated a number of events within the spirit of the BRICS, one of which being the Conference on 'International Arbitration in BRICS: Challenges, Opportunities and Road ahead', the Finance Ministry said in a statement today.
As of 2015, it said, the five nations - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) -- have trading of USD 242 billion.
