1. Mobile app to ensure women safety launched at DU
A mobile application "I Feel Safe" aimed at helping women ensure their safety in the national capital was launched at Delhi University.
"For centuries, women in India have suffered social strictures and abuse. It is important to change societal mindsets so that every girl of our country receives the respect which is her due and shines in life in her chosen field be it science, engineering, medicine, sports, dance, music or any other field of human endeavour," Union Minister Harsh Vardhan said.
The mobile app, powered by Nirbhaya Jyoti Trust, is a personal safety application for smartphone users developed in association with Mobile Standards Alliance of India.
The app instantly adds a virtual panic button. Mobile phone owners can simply press the "Safety Ka Power Button" five times to activate an alarm.
The app does not need to be invoked for the safety alarm feature to work and works even if the screen of the phone is locked, the SIM card has been removed, no Wi-Fi networks are available and without the need to subscribe to a data plan.
The app works across India on all mobile networks and sends near real-time updates about the location of the mobile user.
2. China launches hi-resolution synthetic aperture radar imaging satellite
China launched a new high-resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging satellite from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Centre in northern Shanxi Province.
The Gaofen-3 satellite was launched off on the back of a Long March 4C rocket at 6:55 a.m. Beijing time. It was the 233rd flight mission by a Long March carrier rocket, Xinhua news agency reported.
As China’s first SAR imaging satellite that is accurate to one meter in distance, it covers the globe with an all-weather, 24-hour observation service and will be used for disaster warning, weather forecasting, water resource assessments and the protection of maritime rights.
With 12 imaging modes, the high-definition observation satellite is capable of taking wide pictures of earth and photographing detailed scenarios of specific areas.
Gaofen-3 is also China’s first low orbit remote sensing satellite that has a lifespan of eight years. It is able to provide high-definition remote sensing data for its users over long periods of time. Since the inception of the Gaofen project in 2013, China has had an increasingly clear view of the planet.
Launched in April 2013, Gaofen-1 can cover the globe in just four days. Gaofen-2, sent into space in August 2014, is accurate to 0.8 meters in full color and can collect multispectral images of objects 3.2 meters or longer in length.
3. Dinesh Kumar Khara appointed SBIs MD
Dinesh Kumar Khara was appointed Managing Director of State Bank of India (SBI). He is presently working as MD and Chief Executive Officer of SBI Funds Management Pvt Ltd.
The Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) has appointed Khara for a period of three years, extendable by two years after review of his performance, an order issued by Department of Personnel and Training said.
The ACC has approved appointments of four General Managers as Executive Directors in various banks.
Ashok Kumar Garg and Raj Kamal Verma have been appointed as ED of Bank of Baroda and Union Bank of India respectively. Gopal Murli Bhagat and Himanshu Joshi have been appointed as ED of Corporation Bank and Oriental Bank of Commerce respectively, it said.
4. United Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra get new MDs and CEOs
Pawan Kumar Bajaj and Ravindra Prabhakar Marathe were appointed as Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of United Bank of India and Bank of Maharashtra respectively.
Bajaj is Executive Director in Indian Overseas Bank. He has been appointed as MD and CEO "based on merit-cum-preference", an order issued by Department of Personnel and Training said.
Bajaj has been appointed to the post upto September 20, 2018, the date of his attaining the age of superannuation, it said.
Marathe is Executive Director in Bank of India. He will take over the charge on or after October 1, 2016 and continue for a period upto November 30, 2019, i.e. the date of his retirement, the order said.
The Appointments Committee of Cabinet has approved these appointments, it said.
5. NASA selects six firms to develop habitats for Mars mission
NASA has selected six US companies to help develop prototypes and concepts of deep space habitats for future manned missions to Mars.
The selected companies are Bigelow Aerospace, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Orbital ATK, Sierra Nevada Corporations Space Systems and NanoRacks.
6. Exim Bank extends credit to Malawi for water supply management
Export-Import Bank of India (Exim Bank) gave an additional line of credit (LoC) of USD 23.50 million to Malawi for construction of a new water supply management from Likhubula river in Mulanje to Blantyre.
The LoC will be used for sourcing of goods and services from India.
Under the LoC, Exim Bank will reimburse 100 per cent of contract value to the Indian exporters, upfront upon shipment of goods.
With the signing of the agreement, the bank so far has extended four LoCs to Malawi, taking the total value of LoCs extended to the country to USD 180 million, the bank said.
The LoCs have supported export of items like irrigation equipment, tobacco threshing plant, as also services for projects.
Exim Bank has now in place 209 LoCs covering over 63 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe and the CIS, with credit commitments of over USD 15 billion, available for financing exports from India.
7. TCS ranked among 100 most valuable brands in US
According to the Brand Finance survey 'Top 500 US Brands', IT services company Tata Consultancy Services has been ranked as the 58th most valuable US brand.
