1. Joao Havelange, former president of FIFA, dies at age 100
Joao Havelange, who was the President of FIFA for two decades, died. He was 100.
In 2009, Havelange led off Rio's bid presentation to the IOC in Copenhagen by inviting the members to vote to "join me in celebrating my 100th birthday'" at the 2016 Games in Brazil.
Havelange expanded the World Cup from 16 to 32 teams and made it one of sport's most important events. He organized six World Cups as FIFA president from 1974 to 1998, when Sepp Blatter replaced him. He secured lucrative broadcast deals, brought nations into FIFA and created the women's World Cup.
With more cash for football also came widespread financial wrongdoing by its top officials, including Havelange. In 2013, FIFA ethics court judge Joachim Eckert said Havelange's conduct had been "morally and ethically reproachable."
Havelange was never punished. He was allowed to resign his honorary presidency of FIFA in 2013.

Asia Index, a joint venture between S&P Dow Jones Indices and BSE, launched a new index 'S&P BSE Liquid Rate Index' to measure the performance of Collateralised Borrowing and Lending Obligation (CBLO) rate -one of the most liquid rates in the country - over a period of time.
3. Noted Punjabi writer Gurdial Singh passes away
Eminent Punjabi writer and novelist Gurdial Singh died. He was 83.
4. Raveena Tandon felicitated at Festival of Globe
Actress Raveena Tandon has been felicitated for her contribution towards empowerment of the girl child by the Festival of Globe (FOG) in Silicon Valley, San Francisco.
FOG is an annual event held to empower and integrate global cultures and communities through Film Arts, Performing Arts, Visual Arts and Folk Arts. This year, FOG had taken up the cause of Empowering Youth to fight Sex Crimes.
An actor, producer, columnist and a former model, Raveena adopted two girls when she was just 21. She has since actively been involved in many initiatives associated with motherhood and women's rights.
5. A.R. Rahman honoured with Tamil Ratna Award
Oscar-winning music maestro A.R. Rahman has been honoured by the America Tamil Sangam with its Tamil Ratna Award.
6. Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma to get lifetime achievement award
Santoor maestro Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma will be conferred upon with the annual 'Sangeet Martand Ustad Chand Khan Lifetime Achievement Award' this year,Sursagar Society of Dilli Gharana has announced.
The 23rd edition of the festival that celebrates Indian classical art is scheduled to be held on September 13 and September 14 here with performances by some of the leading Hindustani classical vocal and instrumental maestros.
A Padma Vibhushan recipient, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma was born in Jammu in 1938, and is believed to be the first musician to have played Indian classical music on the santoor, a folk instrument from the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
The maestro will also be performing at the festival.
The society has been felicitating stalwarts of Indian classical music and dance with the award since 1986 to recognise their contribution towards enriching the art forms.
While last year, the honour was conferred upon Kathak exponent Pandit Birju Maharaj, others who have received the award in the past include Pandit Jasraj, Ustad Abdul Haleem Jaffar Khan, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and a centenarian Ustad Abdul Rashid Khan.
The award carries a cash prize of Rs 50,000, a memento and a citation.
According to organisers, the festival aims to resonate a musical spirit among "music connoisseurs from far and wide" as well as offer them an opportunity to connect with the art form.
7. Assam, Punjab, Manipur get new governors
Najma Heptullah has been appointed as the Governor of Manipur. Other than this Banwarilal Purohit has been appointed as the governor of Assam and V.P. Singh Badnore has been appointed as the governor of Punjab.
