1. Actor Kamal Haasan chosen for Frances Chevalier Award
Actor Kamal Haasan has been chosen for the coveted French honour of Chevalier Award.
"Kamal Haasan has been appointed Chevalier de lOrdre des Arts Arts et Lettres (Knight in the National Order Arts and Letters) by the Minister of Culture and Communication, France," his spokesperson said here today. "The award will be conferred on the 61-year-old veteran star at a special ceremony," he added.
Haasan is the second Tamil star after thespian Sivaji Ganesan to be honoured with the French award, with the latter being chosen for it in 1995.
The Tamil Cinema industry was all praise for the "Vishwaroopam" star. Actors Nasser, Karthi and Prasanna, directors KS Ravikumar, Lingusamy and Venkat Prabu among others congratulated him.
2. Ex-RBI deputy gov Mohan named senior fellow at Yale institute
Top economist and RBI's former deputy governor Rakesh Mohan has been named senior fellow at the prestigious Yale University's institute for global affairs.
Mohan will join the 2016-2017 class of 15 Senior Fellows at The Yale Jackson Institute for Global Affairs. Senior Fellows are leading practitioners in various fields of international affairs who spend a year or semester at Yale teaching courses and mentoring students.
At Jackson, Mohan will teach courses on central banking and the Indian economy, the institute said in a statement.
Most recently he was executive director at the International Monetary Fund in Washington, representing India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Bhutan, and chairman of the Indian government’s National Transport Development Policy Committee.
Reserve Bank of India’s deputy Governor Urjit Patel has been appointed as the next Governor of the central bank after Rajan demits office on September 4. However, Mohan was reportedly among the front-runners to bag the coveted job.
Mohan has previously taught at Yale as Professor in the Practice of International Economics of Finance at its School of Management. He has also been a past Senior Fellow at the Jackson Institute.
3. Prominent Black Journalist, Publisher George Curry Has Died
George E. Curry, a journalist, civil rights activist and publisher died. He was 69.
4. Jagdish Mukhi sworn in as Lt Governor of Andaman and Nicobar
BJP leader Jagdish Mukhi assumed office as the 12th Lieutenant Governor of the union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
5. Manjula Chellur sworn-in as Chief Justice of Bombay High Court
Justice Manjula Chellur took oath as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, the second woman to occupy the post.
