1. Anderson topples Ashwin from top spot in ICC bowler rankings 

 
England pacer James Anderson has reclaimed the number-one ranking from India's Ravichandran Ashwin in the ICC Player Rankings for Test Bowlers released after the end of the Edgbaston Test.

2. IRCTC joins hands with Manipur for tourism promotion 


 
Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) and Manipur government have joined hands to provide improved hospitality and tourism services to their customers by making joint use of their capabilities and facilities.

IRCTC, a railways PSU, signed a MoU with Manipur to leverage their combined strength for development of tourism products and opening and managing catering outlets, budget hotels, handicraft shops at railway as well as other locations. The MoU entails upon both the parties to identify areas of cooperation and draw up detailed plans, said a senior IRCTC official.

Signed by IRCTC Chairman and Managing Director A K Manocha and Manipur Tourism Secretary Nidhi Mani Tripathi last week, the MoU also aims to explore involvement of Self Help Groups (SHGs) in catering activities, setting up of water vending machines, use of Rail Neer (IRCTC's packaged water) and development of lounges and greeting services for tourists.

3. HDFC board gives green signal to HDFC Life-Max merger 


 
HDFC's Board approved the merger of Max Life and Max Financial Services with its insurance arm HDFC Standard Life Insurance Company. After merger it will be the country's biggest private sector life insurer.

The total premium of the merged entity is expected to be nearly Rs 26,000 crore and assets under management will top Rs 1 lakh crore. In the private life insurance space, only ICICI Prudential Life Insurance had reported AUM of Rs 1 lakh crore.

Edinburgh-based Standard Life Plc holds 35 per cent stake in HDFC Life, in which HDFC owns 61.63 per cent.

The shares of HDFC Life are proposed to be listed on BSE and the National Stock Exchange of India as a consequence of the scheme, it said.

For HDFC, this will be the second merger announcement this month after HDFC Ergo General Insurance announced takeover of 100 per cent stake in L&T General Insurance.

4. Murli Manohar Joshi releases a book on parliament's functioning 


 
BJP senior leader and Chairperson of Estimates Committee Murli Manohar Joshi released a book titled "The Indian Parliament - Beyond the Seal and Signature of Democracy" in Parliament Annexe building. The book is penned by Devender Singh, Additional Secretary, and Lok Sabha Secretariat.

This book is a commendable narrative, an anthology as much an anatomy, and would be found immensely useful by one and all interested in the working of Parliament," Joshi said.

The book is an attempt to understand the powers, functions and procedures of Parliament, elections and electoral systems and nature and role of political parties in a parliamentary democracy.

5. Hanumantharayappa assumes charge as Silk Board chairman 


 
The Central Silk Board said K M Hanumantharayappa, sericulturist and a weaver, has assumed charge as its new Chairman for a period of three years.

As the 25th Chairman of the board, he succeeds N S Bissegowda.

Hanumantharayappa is a senior political leader from BJP and hails from Doddaballapura, a traditional silk weaving cluster in Karnataka, a release said.

6. Former Arunachal CM Kalikho Pul Died 




Former chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Kalikho Pul died. He was 46.

7. Veteran actress Jyothi Lakshmi passes away 


 
Veteran South-Indian actress Jyothi Lakshmi died. She was 63.

A trained dancer, she is known for roles in Muthu, Sethu and Jaganmohini in Tamil. She acted in Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada and a handful of Hindi movies making up more than 300 films. Her dance numbers were considered mandatory in the movies of the 1980s and early 90s.
