1. Two Indian-American women named White House fellows 



Two Indian-American women have been selected for the prestigious White House Fellow programme that offers first-hand experience of working at the highest levels of the US federal government.

Astrophysicist Anjali Tripathi from California and physician Tina R Shah from Chicago are among the 16 White House Fellows appointed from across the nation for the year 2016-17, officials said.

Shah is a Pulmonary and Critical Care physician-scientist focused on transforming healthcare delivery for patients with chronic diseases.

She recently completed her clinical fellowship at the University of Chicago (UC), where she redesigned the care cycle for patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), dramatically reducing hospital readmissions.

As the recipient of the inaugural UC Innovations Grant, Shah also led an inter-professional research team to evaluate this value-based care delivery programme.

Shah was a trustee for the Chicago Medical Society and has held leadership positions in other medical societies to advocate for her patients and for a sustainable medical workforce. She received a BS and an MD from the Pennsylvania State University/Jefferson Medical College accelerated six- year medical program and MPH from Harvard.

2. Asian Filmmaker award posthumously for Kiarostami at Busan 




Late Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami has been selected for the Asian Filmmaker of the Year Award at the Busan International Film Festival beginning October 6.

The 21st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) has selected Kiarostami, who passed away on July 4 at the age of 76, for the award which is given to Asian cineastes or organisations that have shown the most outstanding contribution to developing the Asian film industry and culture, a release said.

Honoring his monumental achievements in cinema, the BIFF 2016 has decided to give the Asian Filmmaker of the Year Award to Kiarostami, it said.

The award will be presented to the late filmmaker’s son Ahmad Kiarostami during the opening ceremony of BIFF 2016.

Kiarostami was one of the most influential directors in the world and debuted as a filmmaker with his short film The Bread and Alley (1970). Pursuing innovative film aesthetics into the early 21st century, he was invited to the 2nd Busan International Film Festival with his work, The Taste of Cherry (1997).

3. Badal launches mobile app for farmers 




Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal launched a mobile app 'Kisan Suvidha' for farmers.

4. Rajesh Mokashi takes charge as MD & CEO of Care Ratings 




Care Ratings appointed Rajesh Mokashi as its new managing director and chief executive.

Mokashi, who was serving as deputy managing director of the credit rating agency, has been appointed as MD and CEO for a term of five years, a company statement said.

He has been with the company since inception in 1993 and has over 30 years of work experience.

He was earlier elevated to the board of Care on August 22, 2009 as deputy managing director. Mokashi also serves on the board of Cares subsidiary companies -- Care Kalypto Risk Technologies and Advisory Services as well as Care Ratings (Africa).

5. PV Sindhu, Sakshi Malik, Dipa Karmakar to get Khel Ratna, Ajinkya Rahane named for Arjuna award 




The Sports Ministry announced that Rio Olympics medallists’ shuttler P.V. Sindhu and wrestler Sakshi Malik will receive the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award along with gymnast Dipa Karmakar and shooter Jitu Rai.

Considered as the country’s highest sporting honour, the Khel Ratna award is conferred on a sportsperson for outstanding performance over a period of four years. The award comprises a cash prize of Rs.7.5 lakh along with a medal and a citation.

Dipa’s coach Bisheshwar Nandi has been selected for the Dronacharya award along side Team India skipper Virat Kohli’s coach Raj Kumar Sharma, athletics coach Nagapuri Ramesh and boxing coach Sagar Mal Dhayal.

Sindhu’s coach Pullela Gopichand received the coveted award in 2009 while Sakshi’s coach Kuldeep Singh has been overlooked for the award.

The Dronacharya awards for lifetime will be awarded to veteran swimming Coach S. Pradeep Kumar and wrestling coach Mahabir Singh. The award comprises a cash prize of Rs.5 lakh each with a medal and a citation.

Star cricketer Ajinkya Rahane will be conferred on with the Arjuna Award alongside archer Rajat Chauhan, athlete Lalita Babar, cueist Sourav Kothari, boxer Shiva Thapa, footballer Subrata Paul, hockey stars V.R. Raghunath and Rani Rampal, shooters Gurpreet Singh, Apurvi Chandela, paddler Somyajit Ghosh, wrestlers Vinesh Phohat, Amit Kumar, Para-athletes Sandeep Singh Maan and Virender Singh.

The award constitutes a cash prize of Rs.5 lakh and medal and a citation.

Athlete Satti Geetha will be conferred the Dhayan Chand award along with hockey player Sylvanus Dung Dung and rower Rajendra Pralhad Shelke. The award comprises a cash prize of Rs.5 lakh, a medal and a citation

President Pranab Mukherjee will give away the awards at Rashtrapati Bhavan on August 29, which is celebrated as the National Sports Day.

Singapore's Indian-Origin Former President S R Nathan Died. He was 92.

7. President launches Akashvani Maitree channel 



 


President Pranab Mukherjee launched 'Akashvani Maitree' channel for Bengali listeners and its website, an initiative which will provide a platform for blending content both from India and Bangladesh and preserving Bengali culture.
