ISRO Tests Scramjet Rocket Engine Successfully

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has successfully tested its scramjet engine on Sunday in Satish Dhawan Space Centre(SDSC). The scramjet engine, also known as the air-breathing engine because of the technology it uses, was tested with the launch of a big sounding rocket. According to reports.

The scramjet engine will help in bringing down the cost of space launches by reducing the amount of oxidiser to be carried along with the fuel.

SRO scientists say the engine will carry atmospheric oxygen, which will reduce the weight of INSAT-3DR during its launch. The reduction in the satellite's weight by more than half will help it carry added equipment into the orbit.

The ignition of the engine, the building up of pressure and the duration for which the engine can sustain the flame will be tested and monitored," K Sivan had told TOI

The engine was developed at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), Sriharikota.
