When and why do we celebrate Engineer’s Day?
In remembrance of the most outstanding Engineer of all times, the Engineering fraternity of India celebrates “Engineer’s Day” every year on 15th of September.
That man is Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, and India started celebrating his birthday as Engineers' Day.
"Sir Visvesvaraya, an eminent Indian engineer and statesman was born in a remote village of Karnataka, the state that is incidentally now the hi-tech state of the country. Due to his outstanding contribution to the society, Government of India conferred 'Bharat Ratna' on this legend in the year 1955." He was also awarded the British knighthood by King George V, and hence has the honorific "sir". - The Institution of Engineers (India)
Internationally recognised for his genius in harnessing water resources, he was responsible for successful design and construction of several river dams, bridges and implementing irrigation and drinking water schemes all over India.
FACTS ABOUT SIR Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya
1. Krishna Raja Sagara Lake
He is best remembered for the instrumental role he played in the construction of the Krishna Raja Sagara Lake and dam in 1924. This dam not only became the main source of water for irrigation for the nearby areas, but was also the main source of drinking water for several cities.
2. His work was becoming so popular that the Government of India sent him to Aden to study water supply.
His work was becoming so popular that the Government of India sent him to Aden to study water supply and drainage system in 1906-07. He did so and designed a project based on his study which was implemented in Aden.
3. MYSORE UNIVERSITY
Mysore University, which is a matter of great proud for the people of Mysore, was established because of his will and conviction.
4. He was awarded with independent India’s greatest honor, The Bharat Ratna in 1955

5. The block system
The Block System was invented by him, which was a system of automated doors that closed in the conditions of overflow.
