1. Devendra Jhajharia wins gold medal, betters own world record



India’s Devendra Jhajharia bettered his own world record to win gold in the men’s javelin throw F46 event at the 2016 Rio Paralympics.

Devendra won gold in the javelin event at the 2004 Athens Paralympics with a record throw of 62.15 metres, becoming only the second gold medallist at the Paralympics for his country, and improved upon it with an attempt of 63.97 metres at the Olympic Stadium (Engenhao).

The 36-year-old is currently ranked third in the world.

2. Indian-origin scientist bags Lemelson-MIT Prize worth $500,000 in US



An Indian-origin scientist has bagged the prestigious Lemelson-MIT Prize worth USD 500,000 for his groundbreaking inventions to create solutions to improve lives globally.

Nasik-born Ramesh Raskar, 46, is founder of the Camera Culture research group at the MIT Media Lab and an Associate Professor of Media Arts and Sciences.

3. Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma to get lifetime achievement award



Santoor maestro Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma will be conferred upon with the annual Sangeet Martand Ustad Chand Khan Lifetime Achievement Award this year, Sursagar Society of Dilli Gharana has announced.

4. Meghalaya V Shanmuganathan sworn in as Arunachal Governor



Meghalaya Governor V Shanmuganathan was sworn in as the governor of Arunachal Pradesh.

President Pranab Mukherjee had asked Shanmuganathan to discharge the additional duty of Arunachal Pradesh after Governor Jyoti Prashad Rajkhowa was sacked on September 12, weeks after the Supreme Court restored the Congress government in the state.

5. Barack Obama nominates Indian-American woman to be federal judge



US President Barack Obama has nominated a 47-year-old Indian-American woman attorney Diane Gujarati to the US District Court bench in New York, the White House has said.

A well-known federal prosecutor, she served as an Assistant US Attorney in the Criminal Division since 1999.
