1. Boeing to supply Harpoon missiles to India from US



The Unites States Department of Defence has given a USD 81 million contract to Boeing for the supply of all-weather, over-the-horizon, Harpoon anti-ship missiles to India. 

According to the contract details, Boeing has been awarded USD 81,271,024 for firm-fixed-price modification to a previously awarded firm-fixed-price contract to exercise an option for the procurement of 22 Lot 89 Harpoon missiles, associated containers and components for the Government of India under the Foreign Military Sales program. 

The missiles will be manufactured at several places in the United States, with the majority of them being in St Charles, Missouri. Some manufacturing process would also be done in the United Kingdom. 

The missiles are expected to be ready in June 2018.

2. India, Russia launch joint anti-terror exercise in Vladivostok



India and Russia kicked off a joint military exercise in Vladivostok that will see troops training for counter-terrorism operations in semi-mountainous and jungle terrain. 

This is the eighth edition of Exercise Indra, which has been held by the two sides since 2003. Each side has fielded 250 soldiers for the 11-day war game, which is aimed at achieving interoperability in joint operations. 

Besides soldiers from Russia’s 59th Motorised Infantry Brigade, a unit of Radiation, Chemical and Biological Defence Troops will participate in the drill. 

The exercise in Vladivostok began as a contingent of Russian troops arrived in Pakistan for the first joint drill by the two countries. 

3. India third in ICC ODI rankings, Virat Kohli second in batting charts



Away from the 50-over format for a while, India were placed third while mainstay Virat Kohli held the second position in the batting chart in the latest ICC ODI rankings released.

India were positioned third with 110 points behind Australia (124) and New Zealand (113).

4. IAF successfully fired long range air-to-air MICA missile from Mirage-2000 combat aircraft

Indian Air Force successfully fired the recently acquired long range air-to-air MICA missile on a manoeuvring target from Mirage-2000 Upgrade combat aircraft.

A Defence Ministry release said in New Delhi that the missile achieved a direct hit on a target which was much smaller than an actual aircraft and flying at a low altitude.

The release said, with the success of this mission by 'Tigers', the first squadron of the force, IAF has become one of the few air forces in the world with the capability of such beyond visual range air-to-air missile.

Mirage-2000 

The Mirage 2000 is a single-engine fourth-generation jet fighter manufactured by France's Dassault Aviation. It was designed in the late 1970s as a lightweight fighter based on the Mirage III for the French Air Force (Armée de l'Air).

The upgraded Mirage 2000 fighter jets are fitted with the Thales RDY 2 radar, a helmet-mounted display, new avionics, and the ability to fire new weapons including the MICA missile.

5. Sudhir Pratap Singh named new NSG chief, OP Singh CISF DG



Senior IPS officers Sudhir Pratap Singh and O P Singh were appointed as Directors General of counter-terrorism force National Security Guard (NSG) and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) respectively.

O P Singh, a 1983-batch IPS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, is at present working as Director General of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

Another senior IPS officer R K Pachnanda has been appointed in place of O P Singh.

Pachanada is currently working as Additional Director General (ADG) in CISF.

Sudhir Pratap Singh, a 1983 batch IPS officer of Rajasthan cadre, is ADG, Central Reserve Police Force.

The CISF is entrusted with responsibility of providing security to national installations including airports.

6. Apple acquires Hyderabad-based Tuplejump



US tech giant Apple has acquired Hyderabad-based Tuplejump, a machine learning startup that helps companies store, process and visualise big data with its software. 

Post the deal, two of Tuplejumps co-founders -- Rohit Rai and Satyaprakash Buddhavarapu -- have joined Apple, industry sources said. 

Artificial intelligence has become a key area of focus and investment for tech giants like Apple, Google and Facebook that are competing head-on as they develop products like virtual assistants and bots. 

The Cupertino-based company is betting big on the Indian market. In July, Apple CEO Tim Cook had said that India is one of its fastest growing markets.
