1. World's largest shiplift begins trial run in China
The trial operation of a worlds largest permanent shiplift designed by Chinese and German engineers on Chinas Three Gorges Dam began.
The shiplift, is the largest and most sophisticated in the world, according to Three Gorges Corp, a state-owned company responsible for the construction of the project, state-run Xinhua news reported.
Three Gorges Dam in central Chinas Hubei province is the world's biggest water project.
The beginning of its trial operation marks the completion of the Three Gorges project, 22 years after construction on the mammoth project began, Zhang Shuguang, assistant general manager of the corporation said.
President Pranab Mukherjee appointed Alka Sirohi, a member of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) as its Chairman.
Sirohi's appointment will be effective from September 21.
"The appointment is till further orders or till completion of her term as Member on January 3, 2017, whichever is earlier," an official release said.
The post of UPSC Chairman will fall vacant on September 20, consequent upon demitting of office by Deepak Gupta on attaining 65 years of age.
Sirohi was sworn in as Member of UPSC in January 2012, after a long and successful career in the Indian Administrative Service.
Indian shooters called the shots and won seven medals, including three gold, on the opening day of ISSF Junior World Cup for pistol, rifle and shotgun.
Subhankar Pramanik gave India its first gold in the year’s second and final International Shooting Sport Federation’s Junior World Cup.
The boy from Bengal marked his best ever performance at the international level to shoot a score of 613.8, qualifying in sixth position for the eight-man finals in 50-metre rifle prone event.
In the finals, Subhankar shot 205.5 over 20 shots to edge out Filip Nepejchal of the Czech Republic, who managed 205.2 to settle for the silver. The Bronze went to Dragomir Iordache of Roumania.
Subhankar, along with teammates Fateh Singh Dhillon and Ajaey Nithish, also helped the Indian team to a Silver in the event.
Sambhaji Patil bagged India’s second gold when he won the junior men’s 25-metre standard pistol event by shooting 562 to easily beat Australians Sergei Evglevski and James Ashmore.
Sambhaji also added the team gold in the event along with compatriots Gurmeet and Rituraj Singh to take India atop the medal tally, adding to the silver won in the junior men’s team rifle prone and two bronze medals.
In the year’s first Junior World Cup in May in Suhl Germany, the Indians had finished fourth with an overall tally of three gold, four silver and three bronze medals.
To honour her contributions to Bengali songs, West Bengal government will confer this year’s ‘Bangabibhushan’ to legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee told reporters at the state Secretariat about the decision taken by her government.
“Lata Mangeshkar has sung innumerable memorable Bengali songs. To honour her contribution, we have decided to confer her with the Bangabibhushan award this year. I have spoken to her and she has agreed to it,” Banerjee said.
The award will be conferred to Mangeshkar after the Durga Puja, Banerjee said adding a letter in this regard has already been sent to the singer.
The chief minister along with Sanjiv Goenka, chairman of the music and media company Saregama, formerly HMV, with whom Mangeshkar had recorded several hit songs, would visit the singer at her Mumbai residence to confer the award, she said.
A 78-year-old Indian-origin British obstetrician and member of the UK Parliament has been honoured by a leading publishing group for his work in the medical profession and for being an incredible role model for social justice, equality and those less fortunate.
Lord Narendra Babubhai Patel was given the 'Lifetime Achievement Award' during the Asian Achievers Awards for his work in the medical profession and public life in Britain over the years.
Other winners included Selva Pankaj, CEO of Regent Group - a London-based education skills and training development group; Manjit Gill, CEO of Binti, a social enterprise that works for women's causes in India and Africa; and Paralympian Ryan Raghoo, a long jumper who suffers from cerebral palsy.
"This is a celebration of the enormous contribution British Asian make to our country. We see their success in sports, in enterprise and running of multi-million-pound businesses, media, public services and our Armed Forces," British Prime Minister Theresa May said in her message issued for the awards night.
"This is a real honour. It feels like the bigger the award, the less deserving we may be," said Patel, who is a member of the House of Lords and also serves as Chancellor of the University of Dundee.
The Asian Achievers Awards are organised by Asian Business Publications Limited (ABPL) every year to honour British Asian achievements across different fields. This year, the occasion coincided with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's birthday.
