1. Nadia Murad, Survivor of ISIS Atrocities, Named U.N. Goodwill Ambassador

Nadia Murad Basee Taha, who survived captivity by ISIS in Iraq to become an activist for her Yazidi people, has been appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said that Murad’s appointment as an Ambassador for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking marks the first time that a survivor of atrocities has been awarded this distinction.

2. India down to 112th spot on World Economic Freedom Index

India has slipped by 10 positions to 112th, out of 159 countries and territories, as it ‘fared badly’ across categories including legal system and regulation, according to the Economic Freedom of the World: 2016 Annual Report.

Although China, Bangladesh and Pakistan lagged behind India at 113th, 121st and 133th ranks respectively, Bhutan (78), Nepal (108) and Sri Lanka (111) were better placed on the World Economic Freedom Index.

“India has fared badly in all categories i.e. legal system and property rights (86), sound money (130),freedom to trade internationally (144) and regulation (132) except the size of the government (8),” the report said.

The 10 lowest-ranked countries are: Iran, Algeria, Chad, Guinea, Angola, Central African Republic, Argentina, Republic of Congo, Libya and lastly Venezuela.

India's leading public policy think tank, Centre for Civil Society, has published the report in collaboration with Canada's Fraser Institute.

The report is based on data from 2014 and measures the economic freedom by analysing the policies and institutions of all 159 countries and territories.

3. V K Sharma takes additional charge as Chairman, LIC

State-run life insurance behemoth LIC said its managing director V K Sharma has taken additional charge as chairman, replacing S K Roy.

4. Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane receive Arjuna awards

Sports Minister Vijay Goel gave away Arjuna Awards to cricketers Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane at a function held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

Rohit Sharma was given the Arjuna Award for the year 2015 and Ajinkya Rahane for 2016. 

5. Soundarya Rajinikanth named ambassador of Animal Welfare Board

Rajinikanth's daughter Soundarya Rajinikanth has been co-opted as a member of the Animal Welfare Board of India besides being appointed as its Ambassador to the film fraternity.

6. ISRO, Katrina, Juhi Chawla to get Priyadarshini Global Awards

Bengaluru-based Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Bollywood actors Katrina Kaif and Juhi Chawla are among recipients of the Priyadarshini Global Awards 2016 which will be presented on September 19.

Other recipients of the awards, instituted by a socio-cultural and educational organisation Priyadarshini Academy, in various fields are from Israel, Switzerland and UK. The awards are given to personalities and organisations for contribution in their respective fields.

Noted scientist and Chairman of ISRO, A S Kiran Kumar, would receive the award for the agency’s outstanding contribution to development of space science and technology, according to a release issued by the Academy.

Kaif would be presented "Smita Patil Memorial Award for Best Actor" (part of the overall awards), while Chawla would be honoured for her outstanding role in promoting social causes, said the NGO which has completed 32 years of existence.

Chawla has filed a petition in the Bombay High Court against mobile tower radiation.

7. Navy's Most Advanced Guided Missile Destroyer 'Mormugao' Launched In Mumbai

An indigenously built warship equipped with a range of high-tech missiles was launched with Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba saying the stealth destroyer can be compared with the best vessels in the world. 

Christened 'Mormugao', the vessel has been built by government-run Mazgaon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) and belongs to Visakhapatnam class of ships being constructed under Project 15B.

Admiral Lanba's wife Reena launched the bedecked ship at a function at MDL here at 11.58 AM and it was released into the Arabian Sea for the first time. The vessel will undergo certain testings required by Indian Navy and would be subsequently known as INS Mormugao.

Four more such destroyers would be built and delivered by MDL during 2020-2024, the PSU said in a statement.

The first ship of the Visakhapatnam class was launched on April 20, 2015.

Mormugao has a displacement of 7,300 tonne with maximum speed of over 30 knots. The warship is equipped with surface-to-surface missiles, surface-to-air missiles and anti-submarine rocket launchers.
