1. World’s oldest cricketer Lindsay Tuckett passes away

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has paid rich tribute to the world’s oldest cricketer, Lindsay Tuckett, who passed away in Bloemfontein at the age of 97.

Tuckett represented South Africa in nine Test matches against England between 1947 and 1949.

The distinction of the oldest surviving cricketer in the world now passes to another South African player, all-rounder Johnny Watkins, who is 93.

2. Serena Williams overtakes Roger Federer for most Grand Slam match wins

Serena Williams now owns more victories in Grand Slam matches than anyone else in tennis’ Open era, surpassing Roger Federer with her 308th.

Serena defeated Yaroslava Shvedova in US Open quarterfinals by 6-2, 6-3 to claim her 308th grand slam win.

3. WHO declares Sri Lanka malaria free

Sri Lanka was declared malaria-free by the World Health Organisation which called it a "remarkable public health achievement". 

WHO certified the tropical island nation of having eliminated malaria - a life-threatening disease caused by mosquito bites. 

Sri Lanka is the second country in the WHO South-East Asia Region to eliminate malaria after Maldives. 

The Regional Committee has eleven member countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Timor Leste. It meets annually to discuss its programmes and budget which is hosted by a member country. 

Sri Lanka’s road to elimination was tough and demanded well calibrated responsive policies, the WHO said. 

The decision to declare Sri Lanka malaria-free was taken after WHOs East Asia regions annual committee meeting. 

4. ISRO to launch advanced weather satellite INSAT-3DR

ISRO is all set to launch the GSLV-F05 carrying advanced weather satellite INSAT-3DR from the spaceport of Sriharikota, about 110 km from here, on September eight.

"GSLV-F05/INSAT 3DR mission is scheduled to be launched on September 8 at 1610 hours from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota", Indian Space Research Organisation said on its website.

The previous launch by ISRO on Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) was launch of GSLV-D6 carrying communication satellite GSAT-6 on August 27, 2015.

GSLV-F05 in its 10th flight would launch the 2,211 kg advanced weather satellite INSAT-3DR into Geostationary Transfer Orbit (GTO).

INSAT-3DR will provide a variety of meteorological services to the country.

GSLV-F05 is the flight in which the indigenously developed Cryogenic Upper Stage (CUS) will be carried on-board for the fourth time during a GSLV flight.

GSLV-F05 flight is significant since it is the first operational flight of GSLV carrying CUS, the website said, adding it would be launched from the second launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota.
