1. Trump nominates Indian woman to top administration post



US President-elect Donald Trump nominated an Indian-American woman, Seema Verma to a top administration position, making her in charge of a federal agency within the US Department of Health and Human Services.

The announcement came along with Trumps nomination of Congressman Tom Price as his Health and Human Services Secretary.

A leading expert in the country on Medicare and Medicaid, Verma would serve as Administrator of Centre’s for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

2. Actor-director Keo Woolford dies



Hollywood Actor-director Keo Woolford died. He was 49.

Woolford, who directed acclaimed 2013 indie film "The Haumana", passed away, according to his publicist, reporetd Entertainment Weekly.

Woolfords acting credits included a recurring role on TV drama series "Hawaii Five-0", 1999 film "Happy, Texas", and 2014s "Godzilla."

3. L&T Infotech ties up with Akshaya Patra to promote literacy



L&T Infotech announced its collaboration with Akshaya Patra Foundation towards promoting literacy of 10,000 children studying in 35 government schools in and around this city.

As part of the CSR initiative by L&T Infotech, the company will sponsor mid-day meals of these children as well as provide a bus to transport the cooked food to the schools, a company statement said.

The primary objective of the project is to promote school attendance, national literacy rates, reduce dropout rates and also ensure that the nutritional status of children is improved, it said.

The companies signed a formal MoU towards the initiative.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation is an NGO which implements the Mid-Day Meal Programme for Government and Government-aided school children. 

4. 4 India-born CEOs on Fortune Businessperson of the Year list



Four leading India-born CEOs including Microsoft's Satya Nadella and Mastercard's Ajay Banga who delivered big in taking their companies ahead have featured in Fortune's Businessperson of the Year list topped by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. 

Nadella has been ranked fifth among 50 global corporate heads by Fortune Magazine in its annual 'Businessperson of the Year' compilation, followed by CEO of Milwaukee-based maker of water heaters A O Smith Ajita Rajendra on the 34th spot, HDFC Bank's Managing Director Aditya Puri on the 36th position and Banga on 40th. 

Zuckerberg took home the annual honour of Businessperson of the Year, with Fortune saying his success rests on three pillars of "his unique ability to look into the future, his otherworldly consistency, and the business discipline he has nurtured in an industry quite often enamored with bright, shiny objects". 

Fortune quoted former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer as saying that Nadella is a "great leader" for the technology giant. Ballmer said Nadella "has done a great job improving perceptions of the company in ways that can advance its agenda with developers, industry participants, and investors".

The US publication said Rajendra, in his four years as CEO of the maker of water heaters, has kept the company boiling hot, doubling profits and nearly tripling the company's stock price with strong growth in North America and China.

Under Puri, who has led HDFC for two decades, Fortune said there has been nothing boring about its growth, from a pipsqueak with USD 40 million in revenues to one of India's largest banks with USD 5.6 billion.

A regular on lists of the most powerful and influential business persons, Banga has been described as one of the "apostles" of a post-cash world who has been "aggressive" in expanding Mastercard overseas.

The list of 50 business tycoons also includes Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, 2, Alphabet CEO Larry Page, 4, Alibaba Executive Chairman Jack Ma, 10, Apple CEO Tim Cook, 11, Uber CEO Travis Kalanick, 15 and Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, 29.

5. Virat Kohli climbs to career-best 3rd in Test rankings



Indian Test captain Virat Kohli has moved up to a career-best third position in the latest ICC rankings for batsmen after leading his team to an eight-wicket win over England in Mohali.

Starting the five-Test series against England in 15th position, Kohli has risen at a fast pace, scoring 405 runs in three Tests so far. India currently lead the series 2-0.

The 28-year-old Kohli scored 62 and six not out in the recently-concluded third Test to move to 833 points.

Top-ranked in Twenty20 Internationals and second in One-Day Internationals, Kohli will look to improve his ranking further in the remaining two Test matches against England.

Another Indian batsman to figure in top-10 was Cheteshwar Pujara, who occupies the eighth spot in the table, headed by Australia captain Steve Smith. England’s Joe Root is at the second position, having 14 points more than Kohli.

Meanwhile, India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin topped the charts in both the bowlers’ and all-rounders’ list Ashwin has consolidated his position at the top in the Test all-rounders’ rankings with 493 points, a tally not reached by anyone since retired South Africa player Jacques Kallis in 2008.

Ashwin’s spin partner Ravindra Jadeja is the other Indian to feature in the top-10 of both Test bowlers’ and all-rounders’ rankings. While he is holding the seventh position in the bowlers’ list, Jadeja has gained two slots to reach a career-best fourth as an all-rounders after scoring a crucial 90 in his only innings in Mohali.

6. Bapu's Charkha among 100 Most Influential Photos of All Time



A 1946 picture of Mahatma Gandhi with his Charkha (spinning wheel) in the foreground is among the 100 most influential images of all time, according to a compilation by Time magazine of "images that changed the world."

The black and white photo of a bespectacled Gandhi taken by Margaret Bourke-White shows Gandhi sitting on a thin mattress on the floor, head bent down as he is reading the news while his spinning wheels sits in the foreground.

The picture was taken for an article on India's leaders but less than two years later it was featured prominently in a tribute published after Gandhi's assassination.

The Time collection includes 100 of the most iconic and history-altering images, dating from the 1820s to 2015 that have remained engrained in the human psyche from the time they were taken.

Among the pictures is the tragic photo of the lifeless body of three-year old Syrian Alan Kurdi lying face down on the shore near the coastal town of Bodrum, the 2011 Situation Room photo where US President Barack Obama and his team of senior officials watching the secret operation to kill Osama Bin Laden in real time.

The 2001 image of man falling from the Twin Towers in a desperate attempt to save his life as well as the 1993 heart-renching photo of an emaciated toddler being stared at by a vulture as the young boy collapsed on the way to a feeding centre in famine-ravaged Sudan.
