1. S&P retains India rating
International ratings agency Standard and Poor’s (S&P) has retained India’s rating at ‘BBB-/A-3’ with a Stable outlook and ruled out a review even next year.
This is the lowest investment grade rating and the government has been pitching for an upgrade after reforms such as the Insolvency Code and Constitution Amendment Act for the Goods and Services Tax.
“There is disconnect between investors’ thinking and rating agencies,” said Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das. “The government will continue to undertake measures necessary to strengthen economy, boost GDP growth and create jobs.”
The ratings agency, in a statement, said: “The outlook indicates that we do not expect to change our rating on India this year or next, based on our current set of forecasts.” A rating upgrade may be possible if the government’s reforms improves the fiscal situation and the net general government debt falls below 60 per cent of the GDP, it added. At present, it is about 69 per cent of the GDP.
In September, Moody’s Ratings had said a review of India’s ratings may be possible only after one to two years.
S&P was more optimistic about the economy and pegged the GDP growth rate at 7.9 per cent in 2016 and an average of eight per cent over 2016-18.
2. World’s leading off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin will be brand ambassador for Equitas SFB
Equitas Small Finance Bank, the first Private Sector Bank from Tamil Nadu post-Independence, announced World’s No.1 Test bowler Ravichandran Ashwin as its brand ambassador.
In September 2016, Equitas commenced its banking operations and is the country’s first Small Finance Bank to get listed on the exchanges and operate as a non-promoter entity.
Ravichandran Ashwin, who also hails from Equitas’ hometown Tamil Nadu, is the fastest Indian bowler to reach the 50, 100, 150 and 200-wickets mark in Test cricket and is currently the No.1 ICC Test bowler. The cricketer will endorse the company’s products and services through advertising campaigns and other promotional programmes.
3. PM Modi inaugurates Asian Ministerial Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the 3-day Asian Ministerial Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction, AMCDRR, in New Delhi.
4. Sarabjit Singh Marwah becomes Canada's first Sikh Senator
Kolkata-born Sarabjit Singh Marwah became the first Sikh to be appointed to the Canadian Senate.
Toronto-based Marwah is among six people from Ontario who have been appointed to the Senate by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
5. Mohini Sharma to represent India at Mrs World 2016 in Korea
Entrepreneur Mohini Sharma Mane is set to represent India at the 2016 Mrs World pageant, to be held in Korea.
28-year-old Mohini was crowned Mrs India World this year in May.
Designer Masumi Mewawala has exclusively worked on her finale gown and the traditional attire, which will apparently represent "the soul of India".
