1. Rustom-II UAV successfully completes maiden test flight

Rustom-II, India's indigenously developed long-endurance combat-capable drone, today successfully completed its maiden-flight, giving a boost to Indias development programme for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV).

The DRDO successfully carried out the maiden-flight of TAPAS 201 (RUSTOM?II), a Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) UAV. It has an endurance of 24 hours and can conduct surveillance and reconnaissance missions for the countrys armed forces.

The UAV can also be used as an unmanned armed combat vehicle on the lines of the US's Predator drone.

The test flight took place from Aeronautical Test Range (ATR), Chitradurga, 250 km from Bangalore, which is a newly developed flight test range for the testing of UAVs and manned aircraft.

The flight accomplished the main objectives of proving the flying platform, such as take-off, bank, level flight and landing among others, a statement by the Defence Ministry said.

TAPAS 201 has been designed and developed by Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), the Bangalore-based lab of DRDO with HAL-BEL as the production partners.

The UAV weighing two tonnes was put into air by a dedicated team of young scientists of DRDO. It was piloted (external and internal) by the pilots from the armed forces.

It is also the first R&D prototype UAV which has undergone certification and qualification for the first flight from the Center for Military Airworthiness & Certification (CEMILAC) and Directorate General of Aeronautical Quality Assurance (DGAQA).

TAPAS 201, a multi-mission UAV is being developed to carry out Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) roles for the three armed forces with an endurance of 24 hours.

2. Chourasia to get lifetime achievement award for music

Noted flautist Pt Hari Prasad Chourasia has been chosen for this year's Sumitra Charat Ram Award for lifetime achievement in the field of Indian classical music.

The prestigious award will be given to the 78-year-old artist tomorrow by Lt Governor Najeeb Jung at a function.

The prize is named after Sumitra Charat Ram, of the illustrious Shri Ram family, who played a key role in the revival of the performing arts traditions, specially kathak and Hindustani music in north India.

"The prestigious Sumitra Charat Ram Award for Lifetime Achievement 2016 will be presented to Pandit Hari Prasad Chourasia tomorrow at Kamani Auditorium by Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung in the presence of Chairman, Sangeet Natak Akademi Shekhar Sen.

Chaurasia, a Padma Vibhushan Awardee, started learning vocal music from his neighbour, Pandit Rajaram, at the age of 15.

"Later, he switched over to playing the flute under the tutelage of Pandit Bholanath Prasanna of Varanasi for eight years. He joined the All India Radio, Cuttack, Odisha in 1957 and worked as a composer and performer. Later he received guidance from the reclusive Annapurna Devi, daughter of Baba Allaudin Khan," the Kendra said.

The award carries a purse, citation, shawl and a silver plaque.

The past recipients of the award include Pt Birju Maharaj (kathak), Kishori Amonkar (Hindustani vocal), Mayadhar Raut (Odissi), Pt Jasraj (Hindustani vocal) and Kumudini Lakhia (kathak). 

3. TCS awarded Digital Innovator of the Year

India's IT major Tata Consultancy Services has been awarded 'Digital Innovator of the Year' in the Ecosystem Excellence category at GE's Minds + Machines event.

The '2016 Digital Innovator of the Year' award recognises TCS innovation and excellence in developing the TCS Digital Store , an expanding suite of ready-to-use digital solutions that deliver superior customer experience, real time data analytics and organisational agility across multiple industry segments.

The award was given at an event held in San Francisco, California. 

4. India to host T20 Cricket World Cup for the Blind

India are to host the T20 Cricket World Cup for the Blind at nine different centres from January 31 to February 12 and Pakistan is among the competing teams. 

The opening game between hosts India and the West Indies is to be held at Delhi, while the final is to be conducted in Bengaluru, as per the schedule released at a media conference here today by chief guest and former India captain, Dilip Vengarsar.

The tournament, to be organised by the Cricket Association for the Blind in India, is budgeted to cost Rs 24.5 crore, its president G K Mahantesh told reporters. 

Vengsarkar, on his part, invited the organisers to conduct all the matches in Mumbai to be hosted by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), of which he is the vice president. 

The other teams in the fray are England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal. 

Matches would be held in Delhi, Mumbai, Faridabad, Gujarat, Kochi, Bhubaneswar, Andhra Pradesh and Bengaluru.

5. Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Lt Gen Sinha passes away 

Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Lt Gen S K Sinha passed away. He was 92. 

Sinha has served as the Jammu and Kashmir Governor and led the first batch of Indian troops who entered J and K when Pakistan raiders invaded in 1947. 

He resigned from service after the government superseded him and appointed General A S Vaidya as the new army chief. 

Lt Gen Sinha had joined army in 1943 and has also served as India's Ambassador to Nepal and as the Governor of Assam. 

6. HDFC Bank's Puri ranked 36th in Fortunes top bizmen list

HDFC Bank's Aditya Puri has been ranked 36th in the US magazine Fortunes top 50 business persons list for 2016, and is the only Indian among three persons of Indian origin in the global rankings.

Puri, who has led the second largest private sector lender since its inception in 1994, has been ranked 36th in the list, which evaluates corporate leaders business performance.

While Facebook's Mark Zuckerburg leads the list, Microsoft's chief executive Satya Nadella has been ranked fifth. AO Simith's Ajita Rajendra is at 34 followed by Mastercard's Ajay Banga at 40.

The magazine said under Puri, the bank delivered USD 1.9 billion in profits last year and its American Depository Receipts had a 15-year run which took them up 2,200 per cent before some easing.

66-year-old Puri, one of the highest paid bankers in the country, had undergone a cardiac surgery earlier this year.
