1. S Nihal Singh to get Raja Ram Mohan Roy Award 



Veteran journalist S Nihal Singh has been chosen for the 'Raja Ram Mohan Roy Award' for his outstanding contribution to journalism which is presented by the Press Council of India (PCI). 

The award will be presented on November 16 and carries a cash component of Rs 1 lakh.

In a statement released, the PCI also announced other winners of the National Journalism Awards 2016, as per which Renjith Jonh of Deepika Daily has been chosen for his work for the award on Rural journalism and Developmental reporting. 

In the same category a special mention certificate will be jointly given to freelancer Arvind Kumar Singh and X Xavier Selvakumar of Dinamilar, Coimbatore, the statement added. 

T P Dhanesh (Malayala Manorama) and Pritam Bandopadhyay (The Asian Age) were chosen in the Single news picture category while Vijay Verma of PTI was selected for a special mention certificate. 

Renuka Puri of The Indian Express was chosen for the award in the category 'Photo feature' which carries a cash component of Rs 50,000. Baiju Poulose of Malayala Manorama was chosen the winner in the Best newspaper art category, while Rohit Jose also of Malayala Manorama was chosen for the special mention. 

The PCI said that it has also been decided to honour veterans in the field Raghu Rai (photo journalist), Sheetla Singh (senior journalist), Harish Chandra Shukla (Kak) (senior cartoonist) and senior journalists Potturi Venkateswara Rao and Mrinal Pande.

2. Bindheswar Pathak Brand Ambassador of Swachh Rail Mission



Stepping up the efforts to keep railway premises clean, Indian Railways has joined hands with Sulabh International and decided to make its founder Bindeshwar Pathak as Brand Ambassador of Swachh Rail Mission.

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu will felicitate Bindeshwar Pathak, founder of Sulabh International as a Brand Ambassador for Swachh Rail Mission of Indian Railways, said a senior Railway Ministry official.

Sulabh International has been assigned to clean some important railway stations across the country as part of the mission.

As a pilot project, Sulabh has started cleaning and maintenance of five important railway stations from September. These railway stations are Gorakhpur, Old Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Gwalior.

3. S.P. Balasubrahmanyam to get Centenary Award at IFFI 2016



Veteran singer S.P. Balasubrahmanyam will be felicitated with the Centenary Award for Indian Film Personality of the Year at the upcoming 47th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu announced.

"Balasubrahmanyam will be honoured for his talent. He has been working in the film industry since past five decades and has rendered more than 40,000 songs. He is a big name in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and also in Hindi. He has a melodious voice and hard working nature. It's an award, not a reward," Naidu said.

Born as Sripathi Panditaradhyula Balasubrahmanyam, the six-time National Award winning-singer holds the record of singing the maximum number of songs. He is also a recipient of civilian honours -- Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan -- conferred by the union government.

Balasubrahmanyam, 70, has delivered many hit songs like "Om kaara nadhaanu" ("Shankarabharanam"), "Tere mere beech mein" ("Ek Duuje Ke Liye"), "Vedam Anuvanuvuna" ("Saagara Sangamam"), "Cheppaalani Undi" ("Rudraveena"), "Thanga Thamarai" ("Minsaara Kanavu").

The IFFI 2016 will take place from November 20-28.

4. Sushil Chandra takes over as CBDT chairman



Senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Sushil Chandra took over as chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).

Chandra, a 1980-batch IRS officer, has replaced Rani Singh Nair.

5. Kerala becomes open defecation-free state



Kerala has become the third Open Defecation Free (ODF) state in the country. Earlier, Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim had declared themselves Open Defecation Free.
