1. China opens 1st fully-owned satellite ground station abroad



China has launched its first fully- owned overseas satellite ground station near the North Pole which could enable Beijing to collect satellite data anywhere on the Earth at a speed it said was the fastest in the world. 

The facility, located in Sweden about 200 kms north of the Arctic Circle, would allow China to collect satellite data anywhere on Earth at speeds that were more than twice as fast as before, said the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the academic governing body that built and runs the station.

The new facility would play an important role in China's Gaofen project - a network of observation satellites orbiting the Earth to provide global surveillance capabilities - which was due to be completed in 2020, Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post quoted the academy as saying. 

2. Manmohan presents Indira Gandhi Peace Prize 2015 to UNHRC



Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today presented Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development for 2015 to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) at a function.

Singh, who is trustee of Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust (IGMT), gave the prize to UNHCR India Chief of Mission, Yasuko Shimizu, in the presence of the trusts Chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

The prize, which was announced last year by a jury headed by Vice President Hamid Ansari, consists of a trophy with a portrait of the late prime minister in the tradition of Jaipur miniature paintings, a cash award of Rs one crore and a citation.

Established by the UN General Assembly in December 1950, UNHCR works in 128 countries and its mission is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees and seek lasting solutions to their plight.

3. Vijay Sharma formally assumes office as LIC Chairman



Vijay Kumar Sharma assumed charge as Chairman of the nation's largest financial powerhouse Life Insurance Corporation.

The Government had appointed Sharma, who was named Acting Chairman on September 16, as the head of the state-run life insurer, where he will have a five-year term.

Sharma, a Managing Director, was given the role of Acting Chairman when incumbent S K Roy was relieved of his duties. Roy had resigned in June, nearly two years ahead of his term. He was appointed in June 2013 by the previous Congress-led UPA Government.

4. Sunil Arora appointed as Director General of IICA



Former Information and Broadcasting Secretary Sunil Arora was appointed as the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA). 

Arora's appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). He will serve the office for a period of five years or till attaining 65 years of age or until further orders, whichever is the earliest. 

IICA is a think tank that comes under the Union Ministry of Corporate Affairs. It focuses on matters impacting the functioning of corporates. Moreover, it work towards capacity building with various stakeholders including regulators and professionals.

• He is an Indian Administrative Officer (IAS) of 1980-batch of Rajasthan cadre. 

• Earlier this year, he retired as Information and Broadcasting Secretary.

• He is presently serving as an Advisor at Prasar Bharati. 

• At the Centre, he worked in various Ministries such as Finance, Textiles and Planning Commission.

• He also served as Joint Secretary in Ministry of Civil Aviation during 1999-2002.

• In Rajasthan, besides district postings in Dholpur, Alwar, Nagaur and Jodhpur, he was Secretary to the Chief Minister during 1993-1998.
