1. Admiral Lanba takes over baton of chairman of CoSC
Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba took over the baton of the chairman of the chief of staff committee (CoSC) from outgoing IAF chief Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha even as the government plans to create a new post to focus exclusively on inter-services issues and acquisitions.
He would, however, be assuming charge as Chairman Chief of Staff Committee with effect from afternoon of December 31.
Army chief Gen Dalbir Singh, who also retires from service on December 31 and Principal Staff Officers of all three Services and HQ Integrated Defence Staff were present on the occasion.
The government is working on either creating a post of chief of defence staff (CDS) or a permanent chairman COSC chairman.
While the contentious CDS is likely to be a five star post, the permanent Chairman COSC will be a four-star, a post that that the three Services have agreed to.
Admiral Lanba assumed command of the Indian Navy on May 31 this year.
He is a Navigation and Direction specialist and has served on board numerous ships in both the Eastern and Western Fleets.
Air Chief Marshal Raha, had taken over as Chairman COSC on August 1, 2014.
2. Government launches Swachh Swasth Sarvatra initiative
Union Government launched Swachh Swasth Sarvatra initiative to strengthen health centres in open defecation-free (ODF) blocks. The objective of this initiative is to strengthen community health centres in 708 ODF blocks across the country to enable them to achieve higher levels of cleanliness and hygiene.
3. Anuradha Paudwal to be conferred with honorary D.Litt degree
Noted playback singer Anuradha Paudwal will be conferred with honorary D. Litt degree by the D Y Patil University on its 5th convocation ceremony, to be held in Kolhapur.
The degree is being conferred on Paudwal for her outstanding contribution in popularising Sanskrit shlokas from Durga saptashati, Shiv Mahima Srot, Bhagwad Gita and other religious texts, vice chancellor of the university, Dr Prakash B Behere said a statement issued.
The 64-year-old artist, in her career spanning over more than three decades in Bollywood, non-film and regional music, has given scores of memorable hits, esepcially during the 90s.
A National Award recipient, she is also the four-time winner of prestigious Filmfare Award.
Paudwal started her career as playback singer in 1973 and went on to sing over 5,000 songs in Hindi, Punjabi, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Oriya and Nepali films.
Besides giving superhit songs from films like Hero, Ram Lakhan, Tezab, Ashiquee, Jung, Dil, Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahi, Paudwal's devotional songs became widely popular and achieved her a distinct mark in the film and music industry.
4. Bharatiya Jananpith announces Navlekhan award 2016
Two new Hindi writers Shraddha and Ghyansham Kumar Devansh have been chosen for Bharatiya Jnanpith Navlekhan Award for the year 2016, the literary organisation announced.
The decision to confer the award on Shraddha for her short story, Hawa Mein Phadphadati Chitthi and on Devansh for his poem Akash Mein Deh was taken unanimously by a selection panel chaired by eminent poet Vishnu Nagar.
The award, that is given to young authors in Hindi for their first creations, consists of a statue of Goddess Saraswati, a citation and a cash prize each, besides Jnanpith publishing their works, according to a statement signed by Leeladhar Mandloi, Director of Bharatiya Jnanpith.
The selection Board that also comprised of writer and journalist Madhusudan Anand, poet and critic Om Nischal and Mandloi, also shortlisted several other manuscripts for publication including short stories Bohani by Bhumika Dwivedi and Amarbel Ki Udas Shakhein by Amiya Bindu, besides two works of poetry -- Ek Atirikt by Reshmi Bharadwaj and Anantim Geet Ke Beech by Sujata.
5. World's highest bridge inaugurated in China
China inaugurated the world's highest bridge that rises 565 metres above the Nizhu river canyon and connects the southern provinces of Yunnan and Guizhou, officials said.
The construction of the Beipanjiang Bridge, 1,341 metres in length, began in 2013 and ended in September, Efe news reported.
Over 1,000 engineers and technicians were employed for the construction of the suspension bridge built at a cost of one billion yuan ($144 million).
Located on the Beipanjiang Valley, it boasts the maximum vertical distance between the bridge's deck and the earth or water surface below, and is as high as a 200-floor building, said the Guizhou Provincial Department of Transportation.
The bridge is part of a highway that connects Hangzhou, capital of the eastern province of Zheihjiang, and Ruili in Yunnan.
