1. Djokovic wins Qatar Open tennis title


Novak Djokovic has won the Qatar Open tennis title. In an epic final in Doha, the Serbian defeated Andy Murray 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.

Djokovic missed out on three match points and had to repel a roaring Murray comeback before ending the Briton’s 28-match, five-tournament winning streak.

With the win, Djokovic made an immense statement in his bid to rule men’s tennis again as it was Murray, who deposed him as world number one.

The world number two said it was “the dream start” to 2017 in his build-up to the defence of the Australian Open title later this month.

It was the 36th contest between the two, and Murray lost for the 25th time against his old rival.

2. Piyush Goyal Dedicated the World’s Largest Street Light Replacement Programme to the Nation 

Union Minister of Power, Coal, New & Renewable Energy and Mines, Piyush Goyal dedicated the Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP), currently running in the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) area, to the Nation in New Delhi. It is the World’s Largest Street Light Replacement Programme, which is being implemented by the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture under the Ministry of Power, Government of India.

3. Pankaj Advani wins Kolkata Open snooker meet


Cuesports ace Pankaj Advani defeated two-time defending champion Aditya Mehta by 5-1 to win the 3rd Kolkata Open National Invitation Snooker Championship 2017.

4. Bautista Agut lifts Chennai Open title


Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut defeated Russian Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 6-4 to lift the Chennai Open tennis title.

5. IIT-Kharagpur alumnus garners prestigious 'Technical Oscar'


An IIT Kharagpur alumnus, Parag Havaldar has won the prestigious Technical Achievement Award (the Scientific & Technical Awards prize), popularly called the `Technical Oscar', awarded by the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences.

Parag Havaldar, who graduated from IIT-Kharagpur in 1991 with a degree in computer science and engineering, has been awarded for "the development of expression-based facial performance-capture technology at Sony Pictures Imageworks".

Havaldar's popular works include `Watchmen', 'Green Lantern', 'The Amazing Spider-Man', 'Beowulf ' and 'Hancock'. He will be awarded a certificate from the Academy at Beverly Hills on Feb 11. 

6. India, Portugal sign six agreements, including MoU on defence cooperation


India and Portugal signed six agreements - including one on defence cooperation - after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with Portugal's Prime Minister Antonio Costa.

The other MoUs signed provide for cooperation in the areas of information technology and electronics, agricultural trade (including market access for agricultural products), deeper engagement in renewable energy and marine research.
