1. US President Barack Obama declares January 16 Religious Freedom Day


Continuing a yearly tradition, outgoing US President Barack Obama signed a proclamation to declare January 16 Religious Freedom Day.

"Religious freedom is a principle based not on shared ancestry, culture, ethnicity, or faith but on a shared commitment to liberty - and it lies at the very heart of who we are as Americans," Obama said.

Each year, by Presidential Proclamation, January 16 is declared Religious Freedom Day in the US.

Obama rued that in 2015, nearly 20 percent of hate crime victims in America were targeted because of religious bias.

2. India, US sign MoU for collaboration in third world countries

India and the US have signed a MoU to collaborate in the fields of developmental activities and aid in third world countries. 

The MoU has been signed between the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), and Development Partnership Administration (DPA) of the Ministry of External Affairs of India.

MCC is a US agency providing eligible countries with grants to fund country-led solutions for reducing poverty through sustainable economic growth. DPA looks after implementation of India's development cooperation programmes with partner countries. 

As per the MoU signed yesterday, the two countries would collaborate on exchange of information and experience in sectors or issues pertaining to project development or implementation in partner countries. 

India and US might also provide advisory or technical assistance to third countries regarding sector policy reform, project and sector management, project implementation, and economic growth promotion strategies in relevant sectors. 

The MoU also facilitates officials of two countries to site visits to cross-border or other relevant projects, and capacity building of partner countries. 

India and US, the MoU said, share a vision of reducing poverty globally through sustainable economic growth.

3. Oscar-winning ‘The Exorcist’ author dies at 89


William Peter Blatty, the author of the novel The Exorcist and writer of its Oscar-winning big-screen adaptation, has died aged 89.

Blatty wrote several books but his signature achievement was the 1971 novel that told the story of a 12-year-old girl whose vile behavior leads a young priest to conclude that she is possessed by a demon.

4. UAE launches first robot pharmacy


The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has inaugurated its first "robot pharmacy" at Rashid Hospital in Dubai, a media report said.

5. BSNL partners with Tata Communications 


Deploys Tata Communications' Wi-Fi+ solution for providing BSNL subscribers Wi-Fi network access internationally.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam has partnered with Tata Communications to deliver a high-quality mobile experience and accelerate how its subscribers use Wi-Fi internationally. In an industry first, BSNL has deployed Tata Communications' Wi-Fi+, Wi-Fi cloud communication solution, giving its subscribers seamless access to 44 million Wi-Fi hotspots in more than 100 countries including international flights and rail systems.

Wi-fi+ allows BSNL subscribers access to the single largest global Wi-Fi network in the world while travelling outside India. Typically accessing Wi-fi hotspots is very cumbersome and requires the user to remember multiple passwords. With Wi-fi+, BSNL users will have to register just once to automatically connect to the closest participating Wi-Fi hotspot, even if they travel to a different city, country or continent.
