1.N K Singh gets Japan's prestigious national award

Bureaucrat-turned-politician N K Singh will be honoured with Japan's second highest national decoration for his contribution in boosting Indo-Japan economic relations over last few decades.

The prestigious 'The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star' will be conferred on Singh by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at a ceremony at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.

2. Joint Venture for first Auto Shredding Plant in India for Recycling of Specialised Steels and other non-ferrous metals conceptualized between MSTC and Mahindra

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Mahindra Intertrade Ltd and MSTC Limited, a PSU under the Ministry of Steel, for setting up a Joint Venture Company for establishing first of its kind Auto Shredding Plant in India in New Delhi.

The setting up of a Shredding Plant in India will reduce the dependency on import of Shredded Scrap which will help save precious foreign exchange as well as it will be helpful for the secondary steel sector. Apart from this, the shredding of automobiles and other scrap will facilitate & promote recycling, reduce pollution and make Indian roads safe for driving. Recycling will also make Indian Steel more competitive vis-a-vis imported steels.

3. Veteran scribe and IFWJ founder member dead

Veteran Journalist and founder member of the Indian Federation of Working Journalists S V Jayasheela Rao died.

Rao, aged 88, was also a freedom fighter, and was imprisoned in Mysore sub-jail in September 1947 during 'Mysore Chalo Satyagraha', an agitation to force the then Maharaja of Mysore to accede to the Indian Union. 

Taking up Journalism in 1947 through "Deshabandhu", a Kannada daily, Rao then joined "Prajavani", where he served as Reporter and Chief Reporter for 26 years. 

He has also served "Samyukta Karnataka" as Joint Editor, and as Editor of "Munjaane". 

4. Senior scribes to get award for writing on child issue

Senior journalists Manoj Sharma and Sarika Malhotra have been jointly awarded the inaugural Aster Media Awards for writings that have helped create public awareness and drive action on social issues.

Sharma, an Assistant Editor with Hindustan Times and Malhotra, Senior Assistant Editor, Business Today, were chosen for the award, instituted by healthcare charity DM Foundation, which carries a cash reward of Rs 10 lakh.

5. Jagadeesh, Aakarshi emerge winners in PNB Jr Badminton C'ship

Top seed Jagadeesh Kalaga of Andhra Pradesh won the Under-17 boys singles title, while Aakarshi Kashyap bagged twin crownes in the Under-15 and Under-17 girls singles category at the PNB MetLife Junior Badminton Championship Season 2 National Finals. 

In Under-17 boys singles, Jagadeesh defeated seventh seed Deep Rambhiya from Maharashtra 21-15 19-21 21-15 to lift the trophy. 

In Under-15 girls singles category, Aakarshi beat second seed Malvika Bansod of 21-13 21-13 to win the title. 

It was double celebration for Aakarshi over Malavika as she defeated her same opponent in the Under-17 final with a 21-19 21-23 21-18 scoreline.

6. Indra Nooyi, Satya Nadella, Bhavesh Patel among highest paid CEOs in world

As many as three Indian origin persons have been named among 100 highest-paid CEOs globally with PepsiCo's Indra Nooyi and LyondellBasell's Bhavesh Patel making it to the top ten list compiled by Equilar.

Chemicals company LyondellBasell Industries' top executive Bhavesh V Patel was ranked sixth on the list with a total compensation of $24.5 million, while Nooyi, the Chief Executive of PepsiCo was ranked eighth on the list with a total pay of $22.2 million.

Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft was ranked 26th on the list of 100 highest-paid CEOs with a total compensation of $18.3 million.

The overall list was topped by Mark V Hurd and Safra A Catz of Oracle Corp with both boasting a total compensation of $53.2 million.

Others on the top 10 include, Robert A Iger of Walt Disney ($43.5 million), David M Cote of Honeywell International ($33.1 million), General Electric's Jeffrey R Immelt ($26.4 million), Randall L Stephenson of AT&T ($22.4 million), Rupert Murdoch of Twenty-First Century Fox ($22.2 million) and James P Gorman of Morgan Stanley ($22 million). 

7. Economy may expand by 7.8 per cent in 2017-18: UN report

Indian economy is projected to expand by 7.6 per cent in 2016-17 and accelerate to 7.8 per cent in 2017-18, mainly on the back of domestic consumption demand aided by steady employment and a relatively low inflation, said the United Nations Economic and Social Survey for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP)-2016 report.

8. Equatorial Guinea: President Obiang Nguema re-elected with 93.7% of vote

Equatorial Guinea's President Teodoro Obiang Nguema has been re-elected with 93.7% of the vote in election, according to official results.

9. Mongolia confers highest civilian honour on two Indian

Mongolia conferred its highest civilian award 'North Star' on two noted Indian scholars-Lokesh Chandra and Mansura Haider-for their contribution to Mongolian studies.

Mongolian Foreign Minister Lundeg Purevsuren conferred the award on Lokesh Chandra, president of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), and Mansura Haider, former academic adviser at the Indira GandhiNational Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), at ceremony at the Mongolian embassy which was also attended by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju. 

This year being the 60th Anniversary of Indo-Mongolian diplomatic relations, the award has been presented to two Indian scholars for their outstanding "contributions to the development of friendly relations between India and Mongolia and promotion of Mongolian studies". 

10. Indian academician Radha Kumar appointed to United Nations' University Council

Indian academician Radha Kumar was appointed to the United Nations' University Council to formulate its principles and policies, consider and approve biennial budget and work programme.

Kumar is among 12 people who are appointed by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to the council. These 12 appointees will take office with effect from May 2016 and will serve for terms of either three or six years.

Some of the other members appointed to the UN University Council are Simon Chesterman, Lecturer at Harvard and MIT, Isabel Guerrero Pulgar of Chile, Bassma Kodmani of Syria and Lan Xue, Dean of School of Public Policy and Management at China's Tsinghua University.

11. India, Papua New Guinea to sign four MoUs

India and Papua New Guinea signed four agreements. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between India’s ministry of health and family welfare and Paua New Guinea’s ministry of health and HIV/AIDS for a broad range of cooperation in the field of healthcare and medical science.

12. Kohima declared 'smoke-free city'

Nagaland's capital Kohima was declared as a 'smoke-free city'. 

The official declaration was made by Kohima district Deputy Commissioner Rovilatuo Mor during a campaign for Smoke Free Kohima City.

13. Reliance Defence signs military aircraft, vehicles pacts with Ukraine

Reliance Defence, a part of the Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group, has inked a pact with Ukrain's state-owned Ukroboronprom to collaborate for assembling and maintaining the Antonov series of military and commercial transport aircraft -- a Rs.50,000 crore potential.

"Under the agreement with Antonov, Reliance and Antonov will jointly bid for the medium military transport aircraft program of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited," the company said in a release after a meeting Ambani held in the East European country with its President Petro Poroshenko.

"Cooperation between Reliance Defence and Spetstechno Exports will focus on upgrade programs for the BMP 2 and Armored Vehicles, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and Marine Gas Turbines for the Indian Navy frigate program in India."

14. UK Open University honour for Indian educationist

The UK Open University has honoured professor Asha S. Kanwar, one of the world's leading advocates of learning for development, for her "exceptional contribution to global education, social justice and human development".

Kanwar, president and CEO of the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), was conferred with an honorary Doctor of the University degree by Open University vice chancellor Peter Horrocks.

Kanwar, whose specialty is open and distance learning, has previously been associated with Unesco.
