1. Lok Sabha passes all four GST Bills

The Lok Sabha passed the much-awaited Central Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill, Integrated GST Bill, Compensation GST Bill and Union Territory GST Bill 2017, after negating all the amendments put forward by the Opposition.

The four GST Bills were passed after an eight-hour marathon debate in the Lower House.

The government is targeting the roll-out date of July 1 for the new indirect tax regime.

2. Nomura elevates Prabhat Awasthi as head of India operations

Global financial services major Nomura announced the appointment of Prabhat Awasthi as the new head of its India operations.

Awasthi, who currently heads equities at Nomura’s India, will take over charge in his new role from April 1. 

3. President approves law that allows paid maternity leave of 26 weeks

Women employees will now be able to get paid maternity leave of 26 weeks, up from 12 weeks, as per a new law.

President Pranab Mukherjee has given assent to the Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Act, 2017 that has made changes in some of the provisions of over 55-year-old law entitling certain benefits to women employees.

4. General Bipin Rawat made honorary General of Nepal Army

Indian Army chief General Bipin Rawat was conferred the rank of honorary General of the Nepal Army by President Bidhya Devi Bhandari at a special ceremony at the President's official residence Sheetal Niwas here, media reports said.

5. Dr Arvind Lal elected as President of NATHEALTH

Healthcare providers apex body NATHEALTH said Dr Lal PathLabs Chairman & MD Dr Arvind Lal has been elected as the President of the federation for 2017-18.

He succeeds Max Group President and Max India, Max Life & Max Healthcare Chairman Rahul Khosla, NATHEALTH said in a statement.

6. Kotak Mahindra Bank launches new mobile app

Kotak Mahindra Bank has launched a new mobile app 8-11 to double its customer base.

Kotak added that 8-11, which he claimed was inspired by PM Narendra Modi's November 8, 2016 decision to demonetise the old 500- and 1,000-rupee notes, allows one to open a zero-balance, zero-charge account even at an unearthly 2 a.m.

1. जीएसटी से जुड़े विधेयकों को लोकसभा की मंजूरी 

देश में ऐतिहासिक कर सुधार व्यवस्था 'जीएसटी' को लागू करने का मार्ग प्रशस्त करते हुए लोकसभा ने आज वस्तु एवं सेवा कर से जुड़े चार विधेयकों को मंजूरी दे दी तथा सरकार ने आश्वस्त किया कि नयी कर प्रणाली में उपभोक्ताओं और राज्यों के हितों को पूरी तरह से सुरक्षित रखने के साथ ही कृषि पर कर नहीं लगाया गया है।

लोकसभा ने केंद्रीय माल एवं सेवा कर विधेयक 2017 :सी जीएसटी बिल:, एकीकृत माल एवं सेवा कर विधेयक 2017 :आई जीएसटी बिल:, संघ राज्य क्षेत्र माल एवं सेवाकर विधेयक 2017 :यूटी जीएसटी बिल: और माल एवं सेवाकर :राज्यों को प्रतिकर: विधेयक 2017 को सम्मिलित चर्चा के बाद कुछ सदस्यों के संशोधनों को नामंजूर करते हुए ध्वनिमत से पारित कर दिया। धन विधेयक होने के कारण इन चारों विधेयकों पर अब राज्यसभा को केवल चर्चा करने का अधिकार होगा।

2. प्रभात अवस्थी नोमुरा के भारतीय परिचालन प्रमुख 

वित्तीय सेवा देने वाली वैश्विक कंपनी नोमुरा ने प्रभात अवस्थी को अपने भारतीय परिचालन का प्रमुख नियुक्त किया है।

वर्तमान में अवस्थी नोमुरा इंडिया के इक्विटीज प्रभाग के प्रमुख हैं। वह एक अप्रैल से अपना नया पदभार ग्रहण करेंगे।

3. महिलाओं को 26 हफ्ते का मातृत्व अवकाश मिलेगा, राष्ट्रपति ने नये कानून को मंजूरी दी

नये कानून के तहत महिला कर्मचारियों को अब 12 हफ्ते की बजाए 26 हफ्ते का सवैतनिक अवकाश मिलेगा।

राष्ट्रपति प्रणब मुखर्जी ने मातृत्व लाभ :संशोधन: कानून, 2017 को अपनी मंजूरी दे दी । महिला कर्मचारियों के फायदे के लिए 55 वर्ष पुराने कानून के कुछ प्रावधानों में बदलाव किया गया है ।

4. जनरल रावत को नेपाली सेना के जनरल का मानद पद दिया गया 

भारतीय सेना प्रमुख जनरल बिपिन रावत को नेपाल की राष्ट्रपति विद्या देवी भंडारी ने नेपाली सेना के जनरल के मानद पद से नवाजा।

काठमांडो स्थित राष्ट्रपति के आधिकारिक आवास ‘शीतल निवास’ में आयोजित विशेष समारोह में जनरल रावत को इस मानद पद से सम्मानित किया गया।

5. डॉक्टर अरविंद लाल नैटहेल्थ के अध्यक्ष 

स्वास्थ्य सेवा मुहैया कराने वालों के शीर्ष संगठन नैटहेल्थ ने डॉक्टर लाल पैथलैब्स के चेयरमैन एवं प्रबंध निदेशक डॉक्टर अरविंद लाल को 2017-18 के लिए संगठन का अध्यक्ष चुना है।

नैटहेल्थ ने एक बयान में बताया कि वह मैक्स समूह के अध्यक्ष और मैक्स इंडिया, मैक्स लाइफ और मैक्स हेल्थकेयर के चेयरमैन राहुल खोसला का स्थान लेंगे।

6. कोटक महिंद्रा बैंक ने नया मोबाइल एप लांच किया 

कोटक महिंद्रा बैंक ने अपने ग्राहकों की संख्या में दोगुनी बढ़ोतरी करने के लिए एक नया मोबाइल एप 8-11 लांच किया।

1. Navy inducts surveillance ship

Indian Navy's latest surveillance ship, INLCU L51 was commissioned and it will be part of the fleet deployed to check poaching, illegal fishing, drug trafficking and other unlawful activities in the Indian Ocean region. 

The ship was commissioned by Vice Admiral Bimal Verma, Commander-in-Chief of Andaman and Nicobar Command at Port Blair.

2. Nitish bestowed with 'Anuvrata Puraskar 2016' for prohibition

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was bestowed with the 'Anuvrata Puraskar 2016' for implementing total prohibition in the state. 

Soon after receiving the award, Kumar made a fervent appeal for anti-liquor movement across the country.

The Chief Minister was bestowed with the award by prominent Jain priest Acharya Mahashraman jee. Bihar Governor Ramnath Kovind was present on the occasion. 

3. AAI, DRDO and Govt. of Jharkhand Signed a Tripartite MoU for Development of Deoghar Airport in Deoghar district of Jharkhand

Airports Authority of India, Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Govt. of Jharkhand signed a tripartite MoU for development of Deoghar Airport in Deoghar district of Jharkhand. 

4. UK minister Priti Patel receives Pravasi Bharatiya Samman

Priti Patel, Britain's senior-most Indian-origin minister, has vowed to champion the interests of the Indian Diaspora and work for strengthening the Indo-UK ties as she received her 'Pravasi Bharatiya Samman' at a ceremony. 

The minister for international development had been conferred the honour by President Pranab Mukherjee in January.

The award is the highest honour conferred on overseas Indians and Patel has been awarded for her "exceptional contribution to national and international politics, her role in strengthening UK-India relations, and for supporting the Indian Diaspora in the UK". 

Patel received the award from Indian High Commissioner to the UK, Y K Sinha at the Indian High Commission.

1. नौसेना ने टोही जहाज बेड़े में किया शामिल 

नौसेना के नवीनतम जहाज आईएनएलसीयू 51 को बेड़े में शामिल किया गया। वह हिंद महासागर क्षेत्र में शिकार, अवैध रूप से मछली पकड़ने, मादक पदार्थ की तस्करी एवं अन्य गैर कानूनी गतिविधियों पर रोक लगाने के लिए तैनात बेड़े का हिस्सा होगा।

पोर्ट ब्लेयर में अंडमान एवं निकोबार कमान के कमांडर इन चीफ वाइस एडमिरल बिमल वर्मा ने इस जहाज को नौसेना के बेड़े में शामिल किया।

2. नीतीश अणुव्रत सम्मान 2016 से सम्मानित 

बिहार के मुख्यमंत्री नीतीश कुमार को जैन श्वेताम्बर तेरापंथ धर्म संघ अणुव्रत महासमिति ने सर्वोच्च सम्मान अणुव्रत पुरस्कार 2016 से सम्मानित किया।

पटना शहर स्थित श्रीकृष्ण मेमोरियल हॉल में आयोजित एक कार्यक्रम के दौरान राज्यपाल रामनाथ कोविंद और आचार्य महाश्रमण जी की उपस्थिति में जैन श्वेताम्बर तेरापंथ धर्म संघ अणुव्रत महासमिति द्वारा अणुव्रत सम्मान 2016 के साथ-साथ प्रशस्ति पत्र, पुस्तकें एवं प्रतीक चिह्न भेंट किया गया।

3. झारखंड में हवाई अड्डे के विकास के लिए एएआई ने त्रिपक्षीय करार किया 

भारतीय विमानपत्तन प्राधिकरण (एएआई), रक्षा अनुसंधान एवं विकास संगठन (डीआरडीओ) तथा झारखंड सरकार के साथ मिलकर राज्य के देवघर हवाई अड्डे का विकास करेगा।

4. ब्रिटिश मंत्री प्रीति पटेल ने प्रवासी भारतीय सम्मान ग्रहण किया 

ब्रिटेन में भारतीय मूल की वरिष्ठ मंत्री प्रीति पटेल ने भारतीय प्रवासियों के हितों की पैरोकारी की है और भारत-ब्रिटेन संबंधों को मजबूत बनाने के लिए काम करने का संकल्प लिया है। उन्होंने यहां प्रवासी भारतीय सम्मान ग्रहण करते हुए यह प्रतिबद्धता जतायी।

अंतरराष्ट्रीय विकास मामलों की मंत्री प्रीति को इस साल जनवरी में राष्ट्रपति प्रणब मुखर्जी ने इस सम्मान से नवाजा था।

प्रीति को यह सम्मान ‘राष्ट्रीय एवं अंतरराष्ट्रीय राजनीति में उनके योगदान, ब्रिटेन-भारत संबंधों को मजबूती प्रदान करने में उनकी भूमिका और ब्रिटेन में भारतीय प्रवासियों का समर्थन करने के लिए’ दिया गया है।

उन्होंने भारतीय उच्चायोग में भारत के उच्चायुक्त वाईके सिन्हा के हाथों यह सम्मान ग्रहण किया।

1. India becomes third largest aviation market in domestic traffic

India has become the third largest aviation market in terms of domestic passenger traffic, beating Japan, an industry report has said.

India's domestic air passenger traffic stood at 100 million in 2016 and was behind only the US (719 million) and China (436 million), Sydney-based aviation think-tank Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) said in its latest report.

India acquired the third spot globally by unseating Japan, which flew 97 million domestic passengers in 2016, CAPA said.

Domestic air traffic has shown a consistent growth of 20 -25 per cent throughout 2015 and 2016, peaking in January this year at 25.13 per cent.

However, the domestic travel demand rose 16 per cent in February this year, ending the long streak of over 20 per cent.

According to CAPA, India which enjoyed the fourth position in terms of overall air passenger traffic (both domestic and international) along with the UK, has also inched closer to becoming the third largest one by March next year.

"India will become the third largest market 2-3 years ahead of what was projected. This is because the growth has been much higher," Kapil Kaul, head of CAPA India, said.

Japan, which flew 141 million passengers in 2016, was ahead of India whose total air passenger traffic was 131 million in the previous year, as per CAPA.

United States with 815 million passengers in 2016 enjoyed the top position, followed by China with 490 million, according to the report.

2. Vettel wins Australian Grand Prix

Ferrari's driver Sebastian Vettel defeated Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton to win the Australian Grand Prix title.

3. BSF gets first woman combat officer after 51 years

Tanushree Pareek became the first woman combat officer to be commissioned in the 51-year history of the BSF, the countrys largest border guarding force.

Pareek (25) also led the passing out parade of 67 trainee officers that was reviewed by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh at the Border Security Force camp at Tekanpur near here.

Pareek, a resident of Rajasthans Bikaner, is the first woman to join the force in the officer rank after she was selected in the all-India exam conducted by the UPSC in 2014.

The Home Minister himself put the rank stars on the shoulders of Pareek during the piping ceremony.

The force had begun induction of woman officers in 2013.

4. Pro-China Carrie Lam becomes Hong Kong's 1st woman leader

China-backed bureaucrat Carrie Lam was elected as Hong Kong’s first woman Chief Executive who quickly pledged to heal the "divisions" in the gleaming territory.

5. Aditya Puri features in world's 30 best CEOs list by Barrons

HDFC Bank managing director Aditya Puri's name has featured in the list of worlds 30 best CEOs, published by American financial magazine Barrons.

1. घरेलू यात्रियों के हिसाब से भारत का तीसरा बड़ा विमानन बाजार

घरेलू यात्रियों के मामले में भारत जापान को पछाड़ते हुए तीसरा सबसे बड़ा बाजार बन गया है।

सिडनी के विमानन क्षेत्र के शोध समूह सेंटर फॉर एशिया पैसिफिक एविएशन (सीएपीए) की नवीनतम रपट में कहा गया है कि भारत के घरेलू विमानन यात्रियों की संख्या 2016 में 10 करोड़ रही है। इस मामले में 71.9 करोड़ यात्रियों की संख्या के साथ अमेरिका का पहला स्थान और 43.6 करोड़ यात्रियों के साथ चीन का दूसरा स्थान है।

सीएपीए ने कहा कि भारत ने इस मामले में जापान को पीछे छोड़ दिया है। वर्ष 2016 में वहां घरेलू यात्रियों की संख्या 9.7 करोड़ रही। घरेलू यात्रियों की संख्या 2015 और 2016 में 20-25 प्रतिशत की सतत वृद्धि दिखाई देती है और इस साल जनवरी में वृद्धि दर 25.13 प्रतिशत के स्तर पर पहुंच गयी थी।

घरेलू यात्रा की मांग की वृद्धि इस साल फरवरी में 16 प्रतिशत रही और 20 प्रतिशत वृद्धि का लम्बा सिलसिला टूट गया।

सीएपीए के अनुसार भारत संपूर्ण हवाई यात्रियों (घरेलू और अंतरराष्ट्रीय दोनों) के मामले में अभी ब्रिटेन के साथ चौथे स्थान पर है और अगले साल मार्च तक यह तीसरे स्थान पर आने के बिलकुल करीब है।

सीएपीए के भारत के प्रमुख कपिल कौल ने कहा कि अगले दो से तीन साल में भारत तीसरा सबसे बड़ा विमानन बाजार बन जाएगा। यह इसलिए होगा क्योंकि इस क्षेत्र में वृद्धि बहुत अधिक है।

वर्ष 2016 में जापान के कुल हवाई यात्रियों की संख्या 14.1 करोड़ रही जबकि भारत में यह संख्या 13.1 करोड़ रही। इसी प्रकार अमेरिका के हवाई यात्रियों की संख्या 81.5 करोड़ और चीन की 49 करोड़ रही।

2. वेटेल ने हैमिल्टन को पीछे छोड़कर आस्ट्रेलियाई ग्रां प्री का खिताब जीता 

फेरारी के सेबेस्टियन वेटेल ने लुईस हैमिल्टन को पीछे छोड़कर सत्र की पहली आस्ट्रेलियाई ग्रां प्री फार्मूला वन रेस को जीता। 

3. बीएसएफ को 51 साल बाद मिली युद्ध क्षेत्र के लिये पहली महिला अधिकारी

सीमा सुरक्षा बल के 51 साल के इतिहास में तनुश्री पारिख युद्ध क्षेत्र के लिये बल में शामिल होने वाली पहली महिला अधिकारी बनीं। देश की सीमाओं की सुरक्षा करने वाला सबसे बड़ा बल है बीएसएफ।

सीमा सुरक्षा बल के शिविर में आयोजित पासिंग आउट परेड का नेतृत्व भी 25 वर्षीय तनुश्री ने किया जिसका निरीक्षण गृह मंत्री राजनाथ सिंह ने किया।

राजस्थान के बीकानेर की रहने वाली तनुश्री इस बल में अधिकारी वर्ग में शामिल होने वाली पहली महिला हैं। उनका चयन यूपीएससी द्वारा साल 2014 में करायी गयी अखिल भारतीय परीक्षा में हुआ था।

गृहमंत्री राजनाथ सिंह ने खुद समारोह में उनके कंधों पर पद चिन्ह लगाये।

सीमा सुरक्षा बल ने साल 2013 में महिला अधिकारियों की नियुक्ति शुरू की थी।

4. चीन समर्थित कैरी लाम हांगकांग की पहली महिला नेता बनीं 

चीन समर्थित नौकरशाह कैरी लाम को हांगकांग की पहली महिला मुख्य प्रशासक के तौर पर चुना गया जिन्होंने क्षेत्र में ‘‘ विभाजन ’’ का तुरंत समाधान करने का संकल्प जताया। हांगकांग में लोकतंत्र की मांग हो रही है और कम्युनिस्टों के बढ़ते प्रभाव का विरोध हो रहा है।

5. आदित्य पुरी दुनिया के 30 बेहतरीन सीईओ की सूची में शामिल 

एचडीएफसी बैंक के प्रबंध निदेशक आदित्य पुरी का नाम दुनिया के 30 बेहतरीन सीईओ की सूची में शामिल है। यह सूची अमेरिकी वित्तीय पत्रिका बैरोन ने प्रकाशित की है।

1. Filmmaker Gurinder Chadha gets Sikh Jewel Award

Indian-origin British director Gurinder Chadha has been honoured with the Sikh Jewel Award for 2017 for her immense contribution to British cinema.

Chadha, whose films include "Bhaji on the Beach", "Bend It Like Beckham" and "Bride and Prejudice", received the award from UK Defence Secretary Michael Fallon at the Vaisakhi Dinner organised by the British Sikh Association at the Lancaster Hotel.

The High Commissioner of India to the UK, Y K Sinha, who was the Guest of Honour, was also present on the dais.

Chadha's latest film, "Viceroys House" tells the true story of the final five months of British rule in India and coincides with the 70th anniversary of the Independence of India and the founding of Pakistan.

2. Navy gets three naval systems from DRDO

Three naval systems, developed by premier defence research organisation DRDO, was today handed over to the navy by Defence Minister Arun Jaitley.

The naval systems, given to Indian Navy, are USHUS-II submarine sonar, directing gear for hull-mounted sonar array, and inertial navigation system for ship applications.

3. Book commemorating 70 years of United Nations-India engagement 

The United Nations came out with a commemorative work marking 70 years of India’s relationship with the global body.

The book ‘Seven Decades and Beyond: The UN-India Connect’ traces the journeys of India and the UN “as they have informed and enriched each other over the past seven decades”, said Chinmaya Gharekhan, former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations to the Middle East.

4. SAIL, BSNL, Air India incur half the losses of top-10 loss making PSUs

Coal India, ONGC and Indian Oil Corporation emerged as star financial performers among India's central public sector enterprises in 2015-16, whereas SAIL, BSNL and Air India incurred most losses, a government survey has showed.

The Public Enterprises Survey, tracking the performance of CPSEs in 2015-16, revealed that the top three loss-making CPSEs -- SAIL, BSNL and Air India -- incurred a loss equal to 51.65 per cent of the total loss made by the top 10 loss-making CPSEs in 2015-16.

SAIL entered the list of top 10 loss-making CPSEs, apart from ONGC Videsh, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam, PEC and BHEL. Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals, STCL, Fertilizers and Chemicals (Travancore), Air India Engineering Services and Hindustan Fertilisers Corporation went to the profit zone in 2015-16.

The most profitable PSUs -- Coal India, ONGC and IOC -- contributed 17.82, 17.45 and 11.34 per cent, respectively, to the total profit earned by the top 10 profit-making CPSEs during the year, the survey tabled in Parliament revealed.

Hindustan Fertilizer Corporation and Mahanadi Coalfields entered the list of top 10 profit-making CPSEs, whereas NMDC and South Eastern Coalfields made their exit.

The top 10 profit-making companies accounted for 63.46 per cent of the total profits made by all (165) CPSEs during the year.

The top 10 loss-making companies claimed 79.81 per cent of the total losses made by all the 78 CPSEs during the year.

5. Six Indian-Americans among Ellis Island Medal of Honour

PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi, author Fareed Zakaria are amongst six Indian-Americans nominated for the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honour 2017 - the highest civilian award in the US for immigrants. 

Among 88 named recipients, the four other Indian- Americans are Harman International Industries chairman CEO Dinesh Paliwal,Dr Annapoorna S Kini, Yashvant Patel, Mohan H Patel, as well as Pakistani-American Dr Adil Haider.
