1. के बी सिंह नौसेना के नये उपप्रमुख नियुक्त किए गए 

 
वाइस एडमिरल के बी सिंह वर्तमान नौसेना प्रमुख एडमिरल आर के धवन और उनके डिप्टी वाइस एडमिरल पी मुरूगेसन की सेवानिवृति से कुछ दिन पहले नौसेना के उपप्रमुख नियुक्त किए गए।

नौसेना में शीर्ष स्तर पर किए गए कई फेरबदल के तहत चीफ ऑफ पर्सनल :सीओपी: वाइस एडमिरल ए आर कारवे दक्षिण नौसेना कमान के एफओसी-इन-सी नियुक्त किए गए। नौसेना ऑपरेशन के महानिदेशक वाईएस एडमिरल ए के चावला नये सीओपी नियुक्त किए गए हैं।

राष्ट्रीय रक्षा अकादमी, खड़कवासला के कमांडेंट वाइस एडमिरल जी अशोक कुमार नौसेना स्टाफ के डिप्टी चीफ नियुक्त किए गए हैं। वाइस एडमिरल के बी सिंह फिलहाल नौसेना स्टाफ के डिप्टी चीफ हैं।

धवन और मुरूगेसन 31 मई को सेवानिवृत होने वाले हैं। वाईस एडमिरल सुनील लंबा नये नौसेना प्रमुख होंगे।

2. इंडियन ऑयल बनी सार्वजनिक क्षेत्र की दूसरी सबसे ज्यादा मुनाफा कमाने वाली कंपनी 

 
इंडियन ऑयल कॉपरेरेशन (आईओसी) वित्त वर्ष 2015-16 में 10,399 करोड़ रपये का शुद्ध लाभ दर्ज कर सार्वजनिक क्षेत्र में देश की दूसरी सबसे ज्यादा मुनाफा कमाने वाली कंपनी बन गई है। हालांकि, मार्च तिमाही में भंडार में पड़े माल पर नुकसान के चलते कंपनी का शुद्ध लाभ 80 प्रतिशत घटा है।

पेट्रोलियम पदाथोर्ं की बिक्री और रिफाइनरी चलाने वाली इंडियन ऑयल ने 2015-16 पूरे वित्त वर्ष में 10,399.03 करोड़ रपये का शुद्ध लाभ हासिल किया है। सार्वजनिक क्षेत्र में इससे अधिक मुनाफा ऑयल एंड नेचुरल गैस कॉपरेरेशन :ओएनजीसी: ने 16,004 करोड़ रपये का अर्जित किया है।

कंपनी के चेयरमैन बी. अशोक ने कहा कि कंपनी का शुद्ध मुनाफा उसके पिछले वित्त वर्ष 2014-15 के शुद्ध मुनाफे 5,273.03 करोड़ से लगभग दुगना है।

कंपनी ने कहा कि तेल की कीमतें कम रहने से वर्ष 2015-16 की चौथी तिमाही में कंपनी का कारोबार घटकर 80,449.57 करोड़ रपये रह गया जो पिछले साल की इसी अवधि में 93,830.13 करोड़ रपये रहा था।

बंबई शेयर बाजार में आज इंडियन ऑयल के शेयर का भाव 3.01 प्रतिशत बढ़कर 414.05 रपये प्रति शेयर पर बंद हुआ।

3. भारतीय-अमेरिकी वैज्ञानिक ने जीता स्प्रिंगर थीसिस पुरस्कार 

 
सिंगापुर में एक भारतीय-अमेरिकी वैज्ञानिक को चिकित्सा के क्षेत्र में उनके उत्कृष्ट अनुसंधान के लिए सिंगापुर के प्रतिष्ठित ‘स्प्रिंगर थीसिस पुरस्कार’ से नवाजा गया है। वैज्ञानिक ने महत्वपूर्ण ‘ए-20’ नामक ट्यूमर सप्रेसर :ट्यूमर विकसित होने से रोकने वाले: पर अध्ययन के लिए ट्रांसजेनिक चूहा विकसित किया है।

वैज्ञानिक अर्णब डे की थीसिस को न्यूयार्क की कोलंबिया यूनिवर्सिटी ने नामित किया था। इससे पहले डे मधुमेह के उपचार में सहायक ‘पेप्टाइड आधारित प्रोड्रग्स’ का इजाद कर चुके हैं और इसके लिए उन्हें अमेरिकन पेप्टाइड सिम्पोसियम में ‘यंग इन्वेस्टर अवार्ड’ से सम्मानित किया जा चुका है।

उत्कृष्ट पीएचडी अनुसंधान को बढ़ावा देने के मकसद से नामचीन विज्ञान पत्रिकाओं और पुस्तकों का वैश्विक प्रकाशक ‘स्प्रिंगर’ यह थीसिस पुरस्कार देता है।

अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर शीर्ष स्तर की अनुसंधान संस्थाएं पुस्तक श्रृंखला - ‘‘स्प्रिंगर थीसिस : रिकॉगनाइजिंग आउटस्टैंडिंग पीएचडी रिसर्च’’ में प्रकाशन के लिए सालाना अपनी सर्वश्रेष्ठ थीसिस का चयन करती हैं।

इसके अलावा, विजेताओं को 500 यूरो का नकद पुरस्कार भी दिया जाता है। अनुसंधान कार्य यूरोपीयन मॉलेक्युलर बायोलॉजी ऑर्गेनाइजेशन :ईएमबीओ: रिपोर्ट्स द्वारा उल्लिखित किया गया।

4. टाटा ग्रुप ने ई कामर्स प्लेटफार्म ‘टाटाक्लिक’ शुरू किया 

टाटा ग्रुप ने तेजी से बढ़ते आनलाइन कारोबार में कदम रखते हुए अपना पोर्टल 'टाटाक्लिक डाट काम' शुरू किया। टाटाक्लिक में टाटा इंडस्ट्रीज की 90 प्रतिशत भागीदारी है जबकि समूह कंपनी ट्रेंट की 10 प्रतिशत भागीदारी रहेगी। इस प्लेटफार्म का संचालन टाटा यूनीस्टोर करेगी।

5. संयुक्त राष्ट्र में दूसरे अंतरराष्ट्रीय योग दिवस का प्रतिनिधित्व करेंगे सदगुरू 

 
आध्यात्मिक नेता और ईशा फाउंडेशन के संस्थापक सदगुरू जग्गी वासुदेव अगले माह संयुक्त राष्ट्र में आयोजित होने वाले दूसरे अंतरराष्ट्रीय योग दिवस का प्रतिनिधित्व करेंगे। इस साल अंतरराष्ट्रीय योग दिवस 21 जून को मनाया जाएगा। इस साल इसकी थीम सतत विकास लक्ष्यों के लिए योग है।

संयुक्त राष्ट्र में भारत के स्थाई मिशन ने कहा कि इस साल अंतरराष्ट्रीय योग दिवस पर संयुक्त राष्ट्र मुख्यालय में योग सत्र का प्रतिनिधित्व सदगुरू करेंगे।

पेट्रोलियम एवं प्राकृतिक गैस मंत्री धर्मेंद्र प्रधान ने पेट्रोलियम एवं केमिकल इंजीनियरिंग के लिए आंध्र प्रदेश के विशाखपत्तनम में स्थापित भारतीय पेट्रोलियम एवं ऊर्जा संस्थान (आईआईपीई) की वेबसाइट (www.iipe.ac.in) लांच की।

7. भारतीय लेखक ने जीता एशियन बुक अवार्ड 

 
सिंगापुर में 31 वर्षीय एक भारतीय महिला लेखिका को उनकी 3200 शब्द की पांडुलिपि ‘लव ऑफ इंडियन हिस्ट्री’ के लिए ‘स्कॉलैस्टिक एशियन बुक अवार्ड’ से नवाजा गया है।

अदिति कृष्ण कुमार ने इस सप्ताह उनकी पाडुलिपि ‘‘ कोडक्स: द लॉस्ट ट्रेजर ऑफ द इंडस ’’ के लिए 10,000 सिंगापुर डॉलर जीते ।

1. K B Singh appointed as Vice Chief of Naval Staff 

 
Vice Admiral K B Singh was appointed as the Vice Chief of Naval Staff, days ahead of the retirement of current Navy chief Admiral R K Dhowan and his deputy Vice Admiral P Murugesan.

In a series of changes carried out by the force at the top level, Chief of Personnel (CoP) Vice Admiral A R Karve has been appointed as FOC-in-C of the South Naval Command. Vice Admiral A K Chawla, DG, Naval Operation has been appointed as the new CoP, Navy officials said.

Vice Admiral G Ashok Kumar, Commandant of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, has been made Deputy Chief of Naval Staff. Vice Admiral K B Singh is currently the Deputy Chief of Naval Staff.

2. Indian Oil reports highest ever net profit in single year 

 
India’s largest fuel retailer Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) reported its highest ever net profit in a single year at Rs 10,399 crore in FY16, nearly double the level (Rs 5,273 crore) reported in FY15. This is despite its total income from operations dropping by 19.86% to Rs 3,50,603 crore in FY16 against Rs 4,37,524 crore in FY15.

It impacted its net prfoit by Rs 2,464 crore. At the same time, it booked about R1,494 crore of impairment losses.

Till now, IOC had reported the highest profit of R10,200 crore in 2009-10 when crude oil prices were at peak, said Ashok. The government-owned company has reported a gross refining margin of $5.06/barrel in FY16 against $0.27/barrel in FY15.

3. Indian-American scientist wins Springer Theses Award 

 
An Indian-American scientist has received the prestigious Springer Theses Award in recognition for his outstanding research in which he developed transgenic mice to study a critical tumor-suppressor called A20.

Arnab De's thesis was nominated by New York's Columbia University. Before this, De, who has also developed peptide-based prodrugs as therapeutics for diabetes, had received the Young Investigator Award at the American Peptide Symposium.

The thesis prize is awarded by Springer, a leading global publisher of renowned scientific journals and books, to recognize outstanding PhD research.

Internationally top-ranked research institutes select their best thesis annually for publication in the book series: "Springer Theses: Recognising Outstanding PhD research".

Additionally, winners also get a cash prize of 500 euros. The research work was highlighted by the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) Reports.

Only research considered to be of 'fundamental relevance to a general readership' is chosen to be highlighted by EMBO.

4. Tata Group enters e-commerce market with apparel, electronics website 

The Tata Group became the newest entrant into the country's ecommerce market with the launch of its online shopping portal 'TataCLiQ.com'. Tata Industries will have 90 percent share in TataCliq while Trent, another Tata group company will have 10 per cent shares.Tata Unistore will operate its online marketplace.

5. Sadhguru to lead yoga session at UN on 2nd International Yoga Day 

Spiritual leader and Isha Foundation founder Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev will lead a yoga session at the UN on the occasion of the second International Yoga Day next month. The International Yoga Day will be commemorated on June 21 and this year’s focus will be on the theme of Yoga for the Sustainable Development Goals. India’s Permanent Mission to the UN said Sadhguru will lead the yoga session at the international yoga day in the premises of the world body’s headquarters.

The first International Yoga Day was commemorated at the UN with aplomb last year, with External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj leading the celebrations along with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and US Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard.

6. Petroleum Minister Launches Website of IIPE Visakhapatnam 

The Minister of State (I/C) for Petroleum & Natural Gas, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan launched the website (www.iipe.ac.in) of Indian Institute of Petroleum & Energy (IIPE) established in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh for Petroleum and chemical engineering.

7. Indian author wins Asian Book Award 

A 31-year-old Indian woman author in Singapore has won the 'Scholastic Asian Book Award' for her 32,000-word manuscript rooted in "love of Indian history".

Aditi Krishnakumar won the Singapore dollar 10,000 award this week for her manuscript "Codex: The Lost Treasure of the Indus".

1. Indian Coast Guard Ship ‘ARUSH’ Commissioned 

 

The Indian Coast Guard ship ‘Arush’, the seventeenth in the series of twenty Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs), designed and built by M/s Cochin Shipyard Limited, was commissioned at Kochi by the Coast Guard Commander (Western Seaboard) Additional Director General SPS Basra. 

2. Mamata Banerjee sworn in West Bengal CM for second time 

Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee sworn-in as West Bengal's chief minister for the second time. 

3. Bihar govt, UNICEF and MDM join hand to curb malnourishment 

The Bihar government, UNICEF and the Rajendra Agriculture University, Pusa entered into an agreement to reduce malnourishment among women and children in the state. 

As per the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the three, an Agriculture Nutrition Cell would be set up in the Rajendra Agriculture University, Pusa.

4. Sunil Mittal receives this year’s Harvard Alumni award 

Bharti Enterprises founder and Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal has received this year’s Harvard Business School Alumni Achievement Award. 

The award, presented annually since 1968, is the highest honour the Harvard Business School confers on its alumni who have contributed significantly to their companies and communities while upholding the highest standards and values. 

5. India's growth to rise to 8 percent in FY2019: Fitch 

India's economic growth rate will slowly accelerate to 8% by fiscal year ending March 2019, driven by the gradual implementation of structural reforms, higher disposable income and improvement in economic activity, global rating agency Fitch said in a report.

Fitch expects India's GDP to grow 7.5% in fiscal year ending March 2016 and improve to 7.7% in the current fiscal year and further to 7.9% in the fiscal year ending March 2018. 

6. Baciro Dja named Prime Minister of Guinea Bissau 

Guinea Bissau President Jose Mario Vaz issued a presidential decree naming Baciro Dja as Prime Minister of the country. 

Dja succeeds Carlos Correia, who was sacked earlier in May 2016. His removal threatened to deepen political turmoil in the tiny West African nation. 

7. Kerala's Anmol sets new record in girls' 3000m run 

 

Kerala's distance runner Anmol Thampi made the national and meet records in the 3000 metre at the 13th National Youth (Under-18) Athletics championships. Thampi clocked a record 10:00.22 seconds, surpassing the national record of 10:08.29 set by S Jadhav of Maharastra in 2013 and the meet record of 10:08.45 set by Aleesha, also of Kerala, in 2015. 

8. Hockey India inducts PSPB as associate member 

Hockey India inducted Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) as an associate member, making it the 36th inclusion in this category. 

With this inclusion, PSPB can now take part in all the annual National Championships which are being conducted by HI. 

PSPB was established in June 1979 and registered through Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 as extended to the Union Territory of Delhi. 

Presently, a 12-member organisation (ONGC, IOCL, HPCL, OIL, GAIL, EIL, CPCL, MRPL, NRL, Balmer Lawrie and PLL) form the PSPB. 

9. HDFC among world's top 10 consumer financial services firms 

Mortgage lender HDFC Ltd has been ranked among the world's ten biggest and most powerful companies in the consumer financial services sector on a Forbes list topped by global major American Express. 

Ranked 7th, HDFC is the only Indian company in top-ten in this category, where others include Capital One , Visa and MasterCard. 

In the overall list of the world's 2,000 largest and most powerful public companies compiled by Forbes, HDFC is ranked 404th while it is at at 121st place globally. 

For the oil and gas sector, RIL is ranked 9th while the top-tanked firm is ExxonMobil of the US. 

ONGC BSE -1.64 % ranked 220th in the global list and Indian Oil (371) are the other two Indian firms which got featured in the top 20 global companies in the Oil and Gas sector. 

State Bank of India was ranked among the top 20 globally in the regional banks category. With a market capitalisation of USD 23.3 billion, SBI was ranked 149th in the global list. 

Meanwhile, ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank were named among the top 30 in the regional bank category. Both of the companies were ranked 266 and 275 in the global list. 

The data for the Global 2000 list was compiled using data from FactSet Research systems to screen for the biggest public companies in four metric: sales, profits, assets and market value. 

The market value calculation was as of April 22, 2016 closing prices and includes all common shares outstanding. 

All together 56 Indian companies have been named in the global list, out of which 22 public sector lenders have been named in the global list, out of which 22 public sector lenders have been named in the regional banks category led by State Bank of India which was ranked 149 on the list. 

Other public sector lender in the regional bank category include ICICI Bank at the 266 position, HDFC Bank 275 rank, Axis Bank (484), Bank of Baroda (801), Punjab National Bank (866), Kotak Mahindra Bank (899) and Canara Bank (946).

1. भारतीय तटरक्षक पोत ‘आरूष’ बेड़े में शामिल 

कोच्चि में तटरक्षक कमांडर (पश्चिमी समुद्री तट) अतिरिक्‍त महानिदेशक (एडीजी) एसपीएस बसरा द्वारा मेसर्स कोचीन शिपयार्ड लिमि‍टेड में तैयार और निर्मित 20 त्‍वरित पेट्रोल जहाज (एफपीवी) की श्रृंखला के 17वें भारतीय तटरक्षक पोत ‘आरूष’ को बेड़े में शामिल किया गया। 

2. ममता बनर्जी दूसरी बार बनीं पश्चिम बंगाल की सीएम 

पश्चिम बंगाल में तृणमूल कांग्रेस की अध्यक्ष ममता बनर्जी ने अपने दूसरे कार्यकाल के लिए मुख्यमंत्री पद की शपथ ली। 

3. बिहार सरकार, यूनिसेफ ने कुपोषण में कमी के लिए समझौता किया 

बिहार सरकार, युनिसेफ और पूसा स्थित राजेंद्र कृषि विश्वविद्यालय ने कुपोषण में कमी लाने के लिए समझौता पत्र पर हस्ताक्षर किये। 

समझौते के तहत भागलपुर जिला के पूसा स्थित राजेंद्र कृषि विश्वविद्यालय में कृषि पोषण प्रकोष्ठ का गठन किया जाएगा। 

4. सुनील मित्तल को इस वर्ष का हार्वर्ड अल्मनाइ पुरस्कार मिला 

भारती एंटरप्राइजेज के संस्थापक और चेयरमैन सुनील भारती मित्तल को इस वर्ष के हार्वर्ड बिजनेस स्कूल अल्मनाइ अचीवमेंट पुरस्कार से नवाजा गया है। 

यह पुरस्कार वर्ष 1968 से प्रत्येक वर्ष हार्वर्ड बिजनेस स्कूल के उस पूर्व विद्यार्थी को को दिया जाता है जिसने उच्च मानकों और मूल्यों को कायम रखते हुए अपनी कंपनी और समुदायों में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका अदा की हो। 

5. सुधारों के साथ भारत की वृद्धि दर वित्तवर्ष 2019 तक आठ प्रतिशत संभव: फिच 

आर्थिक सुधारों के धीरे धीरे आगे बढने से भारत की आर्थिक वृद्धि दर वित्तवर्ष 2018.19 तक बढ़कर आठ प्रतिशत हो जायेगी । एजेंसी फिच ने यह अनुमान लगाया है। 

अपने ताजा वैश्विक आर्थिक परिदृश्य में फिच रेटिंग ने कहा कि उसे भारत के वास्तविक जीडीपी वृद्धि दर के बढ़कर वर्ष 2018.19 तक आठ प्रतिशत होने की उम्मीद है जो वर्ष 2017.18 में 7.9 प्रतिशत और वर्ष 2016.17 में 7.7 प्रतिशत रहेगी। 

भारतीय अर्थव्यवस्था के वित्तवर्ष 2015.16 में 7.6 प्रतिशत की दर से बढ़ने का अनुमान किया जा रहा है। 

6. बसिरो जा गिनी बिसाऊ के प्रधानमंत्री घोषित 

गिनी बिसाऊ के राष्ट्रपति जोस मारियो वाज़ ने कानून पारित करके बसिरो जा को देश का प्रधानमंत्री घोषित किया. 

जोस मई 2016 को बर्खास्त किये गये कार्लोस कोरिया का स्थान लेंगे. उनकी बर्खास्तगी से पश्चिमी अफ़्रीकी देश में राजनैतिक उथल-पुथल का वातावरण तैयार हो सकता है. 

7. केरल की अनमोल ने बालिका 3000 मी दौर में नया रिकार्ड बनाया 

केरल की लंबी दूरी की धाविका अनमोल थम्पी ने 13वीं राष्ट्रीय युवा (अंडर 18) एथलेटिक्स चैम्पियनशिप की 3000 मी स्पर्धा में राष्ट्रीय और मीट रिकार्ड बनाया। थम्पी ने 10:00.22 समय से रिकार्ड बनाया। उन्होंने महाराष्ट्र के एस जाधव द्वारा 2013 में बनाये गये 10:08.29 के राष्ट्रीय रिकार्ड और 2015 में अलीशा के 10:08.45 के मीट रिकार्ड को पीछे छोड़ दिया। 

8. हाकी इंडिया ने पीएसपीबी को एसोसिएट सदस्य के रूप में शामिल किया 

हाकी इंडिया ने पैट्रोलियम खेल संवर्धन बोर्ड :पीएसपीबी: को एसोसिएट सदस्य के रूप में शामिल किया जिससे यह इस वर्ग में जुड़ने वाला 36वां सदस्य बन गया। 

इससे पीएसपीबी अब सभी सालाना राष्ट्रीय चैम्पियनशिप में भाग ले सकता है जिनका आयोजन हाकी इंडिया कराती है। 

मौजूदा समय में 12 सदस्यीय संस्थायें :ओएनजीसी, आईओसीएल, एचपीसीएल, ऑयल, गेल, ईआईएल, सीपीसीएल, एमआरपीएल, एनआरएल, बामर लॉरी और पीएलएल: पीएसपीबी के अंतर्गत आती हैं। 

9. एचडीएफसी उपभोक्ता वित्तीय सेवाएं देने वाली विश्व की शीर्ष 10 कंपनियों में से एक 

निजी क्षेत्र के एचडीएफसी लिमिटेड को उपभोक्ता वित्तीय सेवाएं देने वाली श्रेणी में विश्व की दस सबसे बड़ी और शक्तिशाली कंपनियों में से एक है। फोर्ब्स पत्रिका की इस सूची में शीर्ष पर अमेरिकन एक्सप्रेस का नाम है। 

एचडीएफसी एकमात्र भारतीय कंपनी है जिसने शीर्ष दस में जगह बनाई है। उसे इस श्रेणी में सूची में सातवां स्थान मिला है। इसके अलावा कैपिटल वन, वीजा और मास्टर कार्ड जैसी कंपनियां इसमें शामिल हैं। 

फोर्ब्स ने संपूर्ण तौर पर विश्व की 2,000 सबसे बड़ी और शक्तिशाली सार्वजनिक कंपनियों की एक सूची बनाई है। एचडीएफसी को इसमें 404वां स्थान मिला है हालांकि भारतीय कंपनियों के बीच उसका दसवां स्थान है। इस पूरी सूची में 56 भारतीय कंपनियां शामिल हैं जिसमें सबसे शीर्ष पर रिलायंस इंडस्ट्रीज है। उसे वैश्विक स्तर पर 121वां स्थान प्राप्त हुआ है। 

तेल एवं गैस क्षेत्र में रिलायंस का स्थान नौवां है जबकि अमेरिका की एक्सॉन मोबिल इस श्रेणी में प्रथम स्थान पर है। 

ओएनजीसी :वैश्विक स्थान 220: और इंडियन ऑयल :वैश्विक स्थान 371: अन्य दो भारतीय कंपनियां हैं जिन्हें इस श्रेणी में 20 वैश्विक कंपनियों में से एक चुना गया है। 

वहीं क्षेत्रीय बैंक की श्रेणी में भारतीय स्टेट बैंक को वैश्विक स्तर के 20 शीर्ष बैंकों में से एक चुना गया है जबकि वैश्विक स्तर पर इसका स्थान 149वां है। इस श्रेणी में शीर्ष 30 में आईसीआईसीआई बैंक :वैश्विक स्थान 266: और एचडीएफसी बैंक :वैश्विक स्थान 275: का भी नाम है।

1. Indian-American students sweep National Geographic Bee contest 

 
Indian-American students have swept the prestigious national bee competitions, securing the first three positions for this year's National Geographic Bee championship finals.

Rishi Nair, 12, a sixth grader from Florida took top honours at the 28th annual National Geographic Bee held at the National Geographic headquarters here.

As National Geographic Bee champion, Rishi received a USD 50,000 college scholarship and a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society. This is the fifth consecutive year that an Indian-American has won the prestigious national tournament.

Eighth-grader Saketh Jonnalagadda, 14, from Massachusetts was the runner up and recipient of the USD 25,000 college scholarship. Third place and a USD 10,000 college scholarship was grabbed by Kapil Nathan, a 12-year-old sixth-grader from Alabama.

2. EPFO doubles insurance for subscribers to Rs 6 lakh 

 
Government has finally enforced the decision of retirement fund body EPFO to almost double the maximum sum assured under its insurance scheme to 6 lakh.

In September, Employee Provident Fund Organisation's apex decision making body Central Board of Trustees (CBT) had decided to increase benefits under the Employees' Deposit Linked Insurance ( EDLI) scheme from Rs 3.6 lakh to Rs 6 lakh.

3.Union HRD Minister Launches Bharatavani Portal 

 
The Union HRD Minister, Smt Smriti Zubin Iani launched the multilingual knowledge portal www.bharatvani.in at Lucknow today. While launching the app the Minister said that under the Prime Minister Shri Modi’s Digital India Mission, Bharatavani App will perform the task of bringing about digital revolution in the county. The Government’s mission is to showcase the Indian culture and heritage to the world through the medium of technology.

This project is in line with the HRD Ministry’s efforts to not only ensure universalization of education but also towards creation of a knowledge society in the digital age. The Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysuru is implementing this ambitious project of MHRD.

One Point language resource : Bharatavani is the first knowledge portal of its kind in India which focuses on becoming a single point source for multiple language learning, content and technology.

Given India’s diversity, Bharatavani is an attempt to bring the people of India under one portal, its goal being to bridge the Digital and language divide, with the idea to publish as well as involve people in the Open Knowledge movement.

Alongwith the Bharatavani portal, MHRD has also launched the Bharatavani Multi-lingual App called Bharatavani. This App will enable users to search for one language text in another language as well as get meanings in different languages. Currently the App has 35 multilingual Dictionaries and MHRD aims to extend it to 250 dictionaries in a years time. This App, on the day of its launch becomes India’s first and largest multilingual dictionary.

The portal has been launched in 22 scheduled languages, which eventually will be extended to 100 more languages. 

4. Renowned Chinese writer Yang Jiang dies at age 104

 
Renowned Chinese writer Yang Jiang, known for her prolific output and marriage to an equally famous author, died at the age of 104 years.

Born in 1911, Yang became a household name in China for her novels, plays, essays and translated works. She was the first to translate "Don Quixote" into Chinese, and her version is still considered the definitive one by many.

In a 1981 collection of essays, Yang wrote with a sense of poignancy on the daily lives of Chinese intellectuals during the chaos of the Cultural Revolution, when scholars and intellectuals were forced to perform hard labour.

Her 2003 essay collection "We Three," about her family life with her late husband and their daughter, was a best-seller.

In addition to "We Three," she published a sequel to her novel "Baptism" at age 103.

5. India fifth largest producer of e-waste in world: Study

 
India, which is has emerged as world's second largest mobile market, is also the fifth largest producer of e-waste, discarding roughly 18.5 lakh metric tonnes of electronic waste each year, a study says.

The telecom equipment alone accounting for 12 per cent of the e-waste, a joint study by Assocham-KPMG said.

The rising levels of e-waste generation in India has been a matter of extreme concern in recent years. With more than 100 crore mobile phones in circulation, nearly 25 per cent end up in e-waste annually, it said.

6. YES Bank gets ex post facto approval to raise FDI limit 

 
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affiars (CCEA) gave ex post facto approval to increase the foreign investment limit in YES Bank to 75 percent.

This will result in a foreign direct investment of $1 billion (Rs.6,885 crore approx.) in the country, the statement said. Bank's present foreign equity is 41.87 percent.

7. Union Cabinet gives approval to six new IITs 

The Union Cabinet gave its ex post facto approval to amend the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 to incorporate 6 new Indian Institutes Technology (IITs) at Tirupati, Palakkad, Bhilai, Goa and Jammu and conversion of Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad to an IIT.

8. Pinarayi Vijayan sworn in as Kerala CM 

CPI-M politburo member Pinarayi Vijayan sworn in as the 22nd Chief Minister of Kerala.

Kerala Governor P. Sathasivam also administered oaths of office to 18 cabinet ministers - 11 from the CPI-M, four from CPI, and one each from the Congress-S, Janata Dal (S) and the Nationalist Congress Party.

1. भारतीय अमेरिकी छात्रों ने जीती नेशनल जियोग्राफिक बी प्रतियोगिता 

भारतीय मूल के अमेरिकी छात्रों ने नेशनल जियोग्राफिक बी प्रतियोगिता के फाइनल चरण में शुरूआती तीन स्थान जीतकर इस प्रतिष्ठित प्रतियोगिता में एक बार फिर भारतीय मूल के छात्रों का दबदबा कायम कर दिया है।

फ्लोरिडा के रहने वाले 12 वर्षीय रिषी नायर ने 28वीं वाषिर्क नेशनल जियोग्राफिक बी प्रतियोगिता में शीर्ष स्थान प्राप्त किया है।

नेशनल जियोग्राफिक बी चैंपियन के तौर पर रिषी को 50 हजार डॉलर की कॉलेज स्कॉलरशिप और नेशनल जियोग्राफिक सोसाइटी की आजीवन सदस्यता मिली है।

यह लगातार पांचवा साल है, जब भारतीय मूल के किसी अमेरिकी ने यह प्रतिष्ठित राष्ट्रीय प्रतियोगिता जीती है।

मेसाचुसेट्स निवासी 14 वर्षीय साकेत जोन्नालगादा दूसरे स्थान पर रहे और उन्हें पुरस्कार स्वरूप 25 हजार डॉलर की कॉलेज छात्रवृत्ति मिली है। तीसरे स्थान पर अलबामा के 12 वर्षीय कपिल नाथन रहे। उन्हें 10 हजार डॉलर की कॉलेज छात्रवृत्ति मिली है।
 
2. कर्मचारी भविष्य निधि योजना के तहत बीमित राशि बढाकर छह लाख रपये की गयी 

 
सरकार ने कर्मचारी भविष्य निधि संगठन :ईपीएफओ: की बीमा योजना के तहत अधिकतम बीमित राशि को लगभग दोगुना कर छह लाख रपये कर दिया है।

ईपीएफओ के केंद्रीय न्यासी मंडल :सीबीटी: ने सितंबर में कर्मचारी जमा सम्बद्ध बीमा :ईडीएलआई: योजना के तहत लाभ को 3.6 लाख रपये से बढाकर छह लाख रपये करने का फैसला किया था।

3.देशभर के बच्चों की पढ़ाई पर ऑनलाइन नजर 

 
केंद्र व राज्य सरकारें मिलकर अब देशभर के बच्चों की पढ़ाई पर ऑनलाइन नजर रखेंगी। इसके लिए दुनिया का सबसे बड़ा 'चाइल्ड-टीचर ट्रैकिंग सिस्टम' जून में लांच किया जाएगा। यह जानकारी बाबा साहब भीमराव अंबेडकर विश्वविद्यालय परिसर में भारतवाणी पोर्टल व मोबाइल ऐप का लोकार्पण करने के बाद केंद्रीय मानव संसाधन विकास मंत्री स्मृति ईरानी ने दी।

स्मृति ने कहा कि शिक्षा क्षेत्र की गुणवत्ता बढ़ाने का विशेष कार्यक्रम बनाया गया है। इसमें विषय ही नहीं हर स्तर पर छात्र-छात्राओं के अध्ययन व शिक्षकों के प्रयासों पर ऑनलाइन नजर रहेगी। इसके जरिये जिला और स्कूल स्तर तक की गतिविधियों पर निगाह रखी जा सकेगी और इसमें सभी राज्य सरकारों का सहयोग लिया जाएगा।

उन्होंने बताया कि केंद्रीय विद्यालयों में शिक्षकों की कमी अब नहीं है। केंद्र सरकार द्वारा छह नए आइआइटी खोलने के फैसले का स्वागत करते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि आईएसएम धनबाद को आईआईटी में बदलने का फैसला कर सरकार ने वहां के विद्यार्थियों की वर्षों पुरानी मांग पूरी की है।

इससे पूर्व स्मृति ईरानी ने 'भारतवाणी' वेब पोर्टल व मोबाइल ऐप का लोकार्पण किया। उन्होंने बताया कि इस एप में अभी 22 भारतीय भाषाओं के शब्दकोष जोड़े गए हैं। एक साल के भीतर इसमें 250 भाषाओं के शब्दकोष शामिल हो जाएंगे। देश में 40 करोड़ से अधिक लोग हिदी में काम करते हैं लेकिन इंटरनेट पर एक फीसद से कम जानकारी हिंदी में मिलती है।

प्रौद्योगिकी की मदद से भाषाओं को बचाने में भी सफलता मिलेगी। देश के इतिहास में पहली बार तकनीक का इस्तेमाल करते हुए भारत की असीम विरासत को दुनिया के सामने लाया गया है। भारत में 1535 मातृभाषाएं हैं और पूरी दुनिया मानती है कि बच्चों को मातृभाषा में पढ़ाया जाना चाहिए। यह पोर्टल इस दिशा में भी मददगार साबित होगा।

चीन की मशहूर लेखिका यांग जियांग का 104 वर्ष की उम्र में निधन हो गया।

बीजिंग में जन्मी यांग ने शुचो यूनिवर्सिटी में शिक्षा ग्रहण की, जिसके बाद 1930 में उन्होंने शिंघुआ यूनिवर्सिटी में पढाई की।

वे साल 1950 में पेकिंग यूनिवर्सिटी तथा सीएएसएस फॉरेन लिटरेचर स्टडी सेंटर में साहित्य शोधकर्ता थीं।

अंग्रेजी, फ्रेंच व स्पेनिश भाषा की जानकार यांग के अनुवाद डॉन कि्वक्जोट तथा फ्रेंच उपन्यास गिल ब्लास चीनी पाठकों के दिलों में जगह बनाई।

5. भारत दुनिया का पांचवा सबसे बड़ा ई-कचरा उत्पादक: अध्ययन 

एक अध्ययन के अनुसार भारत का उदय जहां एक तरफ दुनिया के सबसे बड़े दूसरे बाजार के तौर पर हुआ है वहीं वह विश्व का पांचवा सबसे बड़ा ई-कचरा उत्पादक देश भी है जहां हर साल लगभग साढ़े 18 लाख टन ई-कचरा उत्पन्न होता है।

एसोचैम और केपीएमजी के एक संयुक्त अध्ययन में सामने आया है कि पूरे ई-कचरा में अकेले दूससंचार उपकरणों की हिस्सेदारी 12 प्रतिशत है।

इसमें कहा गया है कि हाल के दिनों में ई-कचरा के स्तर में बढ़ोत्तरी होना भारत के लिए गहरी चिंता का विषय है। हर साल यहां 100 करोड़ से ज्यादा मोबाइल फोनों का प्रयोग किया जाता है जिनमें से करीब 25 प्रतिशत का अंत ई-कचरा के रूप में होता है।

6. यस बैंक के विदेशी निवेश सीमा बढाने के प्रस्ताव को सीसीईए की मंजूरी 

आर्थिक मामलों की मंत्रिमंडलीय समिति (सीसीईए) ने यस बैंक के उस प्रस्ताव को आज मंजूरी दे दी जिसके तहत इस बैंक में विदेशी निवेश सीमा बढाकर 74 प्रतिशत की जानी है।

इस प्रस्ताव के तहत एक अरब डालर (लगभग 6885 करोड़ रपये) का प्रत्यक्ष विदेशी निवेश (एफडीआई) आएगा। बैंक में मौजूदा विदेशी इक्विटी 41.87 प्रतिशत है।

7. केंद्रीय मंत्रिमंडल ने छह नये आईआईटी को मंजूरी दी 

केंद्रीय मंत्रिमंडल ने तिरूपति , पलक्कड़, धारवाड़ , भिलाई , गोवा, जम्मू में 6 नये आईआईटी को शामिल करने तथा धनबाद के भारतीय खान विद्यालय को आईआईटी में प्रोन्नत करने के लिए भारतीय प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान अधिनियम, 1961 में संशोधन को अपनी मंजूरी दी।

8. पिनराई विजयन ने केरल के मुख्यमंत्री पद की शपथ ली 

माकपा के दिग्गज नेता पिनराई विजयन ने केरल के 22 वें मुख्यमंत्री के रूप में शपथ ली ।

विजयन को राज्यपाल न्यायमूर्ति :सेवानिवृत: पी सदाशिवम ने सेंट्रल स्टेडियम में पद एवं गोपनीयता की शपथ दिलायी ।

विजयन इस पद की शपथ लेने के साथ केरल में वाम लोकतांत्रिक मोर्चा :एलडीएफ: के 19 सदस्यीय मंत्रिमंडल का नेतृत्व कर रहे हैं जिसमें 13 नये चेहरे हैं और दो महिलाएं हैं।

Subhash Chandra has resigned from the post of Director and Non-Executive Chairman of Zee Media.

It further said that its board also approved appointment of R K Arora, CEO, as an Additional Director of the company.

2. India signs $100 mn loan agreement with World Bank 

 

India signed a $100 million (about Rs 677 crore) loan agreement with multilateral lending agency World Bank for Karnataka Urban Water Supply Modernisation Project.

The project aims to provide access to a continuous piped water supply in various cities in Karnataka and strengthen the service delivery arrangements at the city level, a finance ministry statement said.

Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development & Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) is the implementing agency for the project, it added.

The agreement was signed by Department of Economic Affairs Joint Secretary Raj Kumar on behalf of India and World Bank's India Acting Country Director Michael Haney on behalf of World Bank.

3. Lucknow tops list of 13 new smart cities 

 
The government announced the names of 13 more cities to be developed as smart cities, taking the total count to 33. Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh has topped this list and the other selected cities are Warangal in Telangana, Dharmashala in Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Raipur, New Town Kolkata, Bhagalpur in Bihar, Panaji, Port Blair, Imphal, Ranchi, Agartala and Faridabad in Haryana.

The 13 cities have proposed total investment of Rs 30,229 crore. The 20 cities on the original list had proposed Rs 50,802 crore. Mathura and Rai Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir will be allowed to participate in the smart city competition and one city from each of these two states will be selected based on the quality of their smart city plans. Seven capitals left out of the smart city mission — Patna, Shimla, Naya Raipur, Itanagar, Amaravati, Bengaluru and Thiruvananthapuram — will also be allowed to participate in the competition. 

4. Tech Mahindra drops plans to start payments bank 

Tech Mahindra said it was dropping its plans to start a payment bank as the increasing aggression in the business would have eroded its margin potential.

TechM become the third license winner to pull out of the business. Sun Pharma promoter Dilip Shanghvi and Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Co. had already announced that they would not be setting up the bank.

5. Islamic banking to debut in Gujarat

 
Jeddah-based Islamic Development Bank (IDB) is set to start its India operations from Gujarat. The international financial institution from Saudi Arabia has chosen Gujarat to set up its first branch in India. The state will also get 30 medical vans as part of IDB's social sector initiatives.

IDB's main objective is to foster the economic development and social progress of member countries as well as the Muslim community in accordance with principles of Shariah (Islamic law). The bank has 56 Islamic countries as its members.

6. Department of Empowerment of Disability Affairs to incorporate the word ‘Divyang’ in Hindi and English names 

 
In line with the Prime Minister's call to call the disabled as 'Divyang' instead of 'Viklang', the Centre has renamed the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities to incorporate the word 'Divyang' in its Hindi as well as English nomenclature.

The Department so far known as the 'Viklangjan Sashaktikaran Vibhag' in Hindi will now be known as 'Divyangjan Sashaktikaran Vibhag' as per a change in the Government of India (Allocation of Business) rules now approved by President Pranab Mukherjee. In the English nomenclature too, the word 'Divyangan' has been suffixed now to the original name and the Department will now on be known as the 'Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangan)'.

7. Pink Panther star Burt Kwouk passes away 

 
Renowned Pink Panther star Burt Kwouk passed away. He was 85.

He was best known for playing Inspector Clouseau's manservant Cato in the Pink Panther films.

8. HAL signs pact with BEL to develop airborne communication 

 

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) said that it has signed a pact with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for developing advanced airborne communication and electronic warfare systems.
