Miss France Iris Mittenaere crowned Miss Universe 2017
Iris Mittenaere from France has been crowned the new Miss Universe during the 65th edition of the pageant, while Miss Haiti Raquel Pelissier was named first runner-up.
Iris, 24, is a Parisian native, currently pursuing a degree in dental surgery. She plans to use her Miss Universe platform to advocate for dental and oral hygiene.
She takes over from the till-now reigning Miss Universe, Pia Wurtzbach from Philippines.
India's Roshmitha Harimurthy failed to advance to the top 13 of the contest.

World Bank signs loan pact for engineering education
The World Bank has signed an agreement with the government to provide USD 201.50 million loan for quality engineering education across several states in India.
The loan agreement is part of the Technical Education Quality Improvement Project (TEQIP III), which is the third phase of a 15-20 year programme that started in 2002.
TEQIP III has supported 250 engineering institutes, including NIT Surathkal, College of Engineering Pune, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad and BIT Mesra.

Top Indian diplomat re-appointed to UN Joint Inspection Unit
Achamkulangare Gopinathan, a top Indian diplomat, has been re-appointed by the UN General Assembly to the Joint Inspection Unit, the only independent external oversight body of the UN system.
Gopinathan, along with Sukai Prom-Jackson of Gambia, Jean Wesley Cazeau of Haiti and Nikolay Lozinskiy of Russia were appointed members of the Joint Inspection Unit for a five-year term beginning January 1, 2018.
US, Japan conduct test of joint missile
The United States and Japan have conducted the first interception of a ballistic missile target using a jointly built system, amid heightened tensions over North Korea's missile program.
The two nations have been working together since 2006 to develop a variant of the Standard Missile-3, a ship-launched missile that operates as part of the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System.
Test off Kauai in Hawaii saw the Standard Missile-3 "Block IIA" successfully hit its target in space, the US Missile Defense Agency said.
India, Austria sign protocol amending tax treaty
India and Austria agreed to amend their existing bilateral taxation treaty to prevent tax evasion as well as enable mutual assistance.
The protocol will broaden the scope of the existing framework of exchange of tax related information which will help curb tax evasion and tax avoidance between the two countries.
It was signed by Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Chairman on behalf of India and Embassy of Austria Charge d Affaires Georg Zehetner on behalf of Austria.

A bench of Justices Dipak Misra, A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud directed that the committee - also comprising eminent cricket historian Ramachandra Guha, CEO & MD of Infrastructure Development Finance Company (IDFC) VikramLimaye and former Indian women cricket captain Diana Edulji - would supervise the management of BCCI and CEO of the Board would report to the panel.

GDP growth in 2017-18 is projected at 6 ¾ to 7 ½ percent Post-demonetisation
The Government says that the adverse impact of demonetisation on GDP growth will be transitional. The Economic Survey 2017 presented in Parliament by the union Finance Minister, Shri Arun Jaitley states that once the cash supply is replenished, which is likely to be achieved by end March 2017, the economy would revert to the normal. Therefore the real GDP growth in 2017-18 is projected to be in the range of 6¾-7½ percent.
Jallikattu Bill Receives President's Nod
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam said the Bill to replace an ordinance for the conduct of Jallikattu has received President Pranab Mukherjee's assent and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his support in enabling the bull taming sport to be held in the state.
In a letter to Modi, Panneerselvam recalled his government had initially promulgated an ordinance and later replaced it with a bill passed unanimously by the state assembly.
CSO revises GDP growth for 2015-16 upwards to 7.9%

Naval reconnaissance aircraft test-fires anti-ship missile
The Indian Navy's maritime patrol aircraft Ilyushin 38 Sea Dragon (IL 38 SD) carried out a successful anti-ship missile firing on a target ship in the Arabian Sea.
This was the aircraft's maiden firing post-midlife refit and modifications.
The firing was conducted as part of the ongoing annual Theater level Readiness and Operational Exercise (TROPEX-17) on the Western seaboard.

The BBPS is a centralised system created by the National Payments Corporation, involving banks and non-banks and allows agents to access bill payments services in an interoperable manner.
Cabinet approves signing of MoU India, Senegal in health
The government approved signing of an agreement between India and Senegal in the field of health and medicine which includes cooperation in AIDS control, integrated disease surveillance and emergency relief.
A working group will be set up to further elaborate the details of cooperation and to oversee the implementation of this pact, as per the decision of the Union Cabinet.
India ranks 43rd out of 45 nations in IP environment: Report
India continues to languish near the bottom in an international intellectual property index, ranking 43rd out of 45 global economies, according to a report by the US Chamber of Commerce’s Global Intellectual Property Center (GIPC).
The GIPC also highlighted the need for the government to "build upon the positive rhetoric of its IPR policy with the substantial legislative reforms that innovators need".
This is the fifth year in a row that India has been ranked at the bottom of the pack in the index. However, the 2017 report, titled The Roots of Innovation, represents a slight improvement in its performance as the country was ranked last or next-to-last in the last four years.
